His <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/news\/releases\/2007\/03\/20070301-13.html\">remarks<\/a> to a local charter school were especially enlightening.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I thank you all for giving me a chance to come. There&#8217;s nothing more illustrative of the issues that this community faces than to think that that blue line represented water and destruction. And yet, we&#8217;re now dry, we&#8217;re on dry land, recovering. And so I&#8217;ve come back to New Orleans, Louisiana, to remind people that <b>the federal government still knows you exist<\/b>, still knows you have issues, and wants to work with your leadership to address those issues.&#8221; (emphasis added)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I&#8217;m sure it was reassuring to the children and their parents to know that the president still believes they &#8220;exist,&#8221; but some of the audience should be forgiven if they remain <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanprogressaction.org\/progressreport\/2007\/03\/dont_ask_dont_tell.html\/#7\">skeptical<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Eighteen months after the storm hit, <a href=\"http:\/\/capweb.democracyinaction.org\/dia\/track.jsp?key=260858844&amp;url_num=79&amp;url=http:\/\/www.stltoday.com\/stltoday\/news\/stories.nsf\/nation\/story\/9710810C6907075C8625728E001865EF?OpenDocument\">approximately 110,000<\/a> Katrina victims still live in trailers or receive rental assistance. &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/capweb.democracyinaction.org\/dia\/track.jsp?key=260858844&amp;url_num=80&amp;url=http:\/\/www.2theadvocate.com\/news\/neworleans\/5909101.html\">More than half<\/a> of Orleans Parish&#8217;s public schools and nearly 70 percent of its child-care centers remain closed while the limited hospital emergency rooms are &#8216;saturated&#8217; with patients.&#8221; Only <a href=\"http:\/\/capweb.democracyinaction.org\/dia\/track.jsp?key=260858844&amp;url_num=81&amp;url=http:\/\/southernstudies.org\/facingsouth\/2006\/02\/fs-exclusive-mardi-gras-index.asp\">17 percent<\/a> of New Orleans&#8217;s public schools have reopened.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Looking back at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/news\/releases\/2005\/09\/20050915-8.html\">the speech<\/a> Bush delivered in Jackson Square in September 2005, this wasn&#8217;t supposed to happen.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\n<em>Update<\/em>: Moreover, <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.chron.com\/whitehouse\/archives\/2007\/03\/going_coastal.html\">this<\/a> is the kind of thing the White House should know to avoid.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>One thing Bush likes to do in the Gulf Coast is <a href=\"http:\/\/sbc.senate.gov\/record.cfm?id=252376\">hand out American flags<\/a> to families rebuilding their houses. Long before he shows up, Bush&#8217;s advance team scouts the non-hostile property owners in a neighborhood, and later, the president drops by and gives the family a flag. The White House thinks this makes for good pictures &#8212; and maybe it did, a month after the storm. But a year and half later, with the region still a mess and so many people displaced, it seems a little tone-deaf to be handing out flags &#8212; politically, it does invite comparisons to what Bush <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2006\/02\/11\/AR2006021101409.html\"><em>isn&#8217;t<\/em> doing<\/a> in the region.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>You think?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After leaving Gulf Coast, post-Katrina, recovery out of the State of the Union altogether this year, the president was in New Orleans yesterday for a series of photo-ops.
