{"id":1029,"date":"2004-01-02T10:35:29","date_gmt":"2004-01-02T15:35:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thecarpetbaggerreport.com\/archives\/1029.html"},"modified":"2004-01-02T10:35:29","modified_gmt":"2004-01-02T15:35:29","slug":"powells-year-in-review-leaves-out-a-few-details","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stevebenen.com\/thecarpetbaggerreport\/powells-year-in-review-leaves-out-a-few-details\/","title":{"rendered":"Powell&#8217;s &#8216;Year in Review&#8217; leaves out a few details"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Colin Powell wrote an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2004\/01\/01\/opinion\/01POWE.html?pagewanted=print&#038;position=\">op-ed for the New York Times<\/a> yesterday that sought to mark New Year&#8217;s Day by &#8220;review[ing] the achievements of the year gone by and mak[ing] resolutions for the year ahead.&#8221; Fair enough.<\/p>\n<p>Powell&#8217;s mistakes had nothing to do with looking ahead; indeed, I can agree with nearly all of the foreign policy <i>goals<\/i> he set. The problem, as I saw it, is that Powell&#8217;s column was also intended as an overview of the Bush administration&#8217;s multiple foreign policy successes, but few if any of these alleged triumphs were as he described them to be.<\/p>\n<p><i>* The Afghan people now have a constitution, a rapidly advancing market economy, and new hope as they look toward national elections.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Actually, all of this is wrong. First, the Afghan people <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/articles\/A48077-2004Jan1.html\">do not have a constitution<\/a>. Second, their economy is a ravaged, <a href=\"http:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2003\/ALLPOLITICS\/11\/28\/afghanistan.drugs.reut\/\">drug-dependent mess<\/a>. And lastly, elections are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/nationworld\/world\/la-fg-afghan2dec02,1,4053226.story?coll=la-home-headlines\">no where on the horizon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><i>* [W]e are resolved to support the young democracies that have risen in Latin America<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Right, the way the administration supported <a href=\"http:\/\/www.truthout.org\/docs_02\/12.30C.bush.stum.venz.htm\">democracy in Venezuela<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p><i>* Afghanistan is no longer a devil&#8217;s playground for terrorists<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Afghanistan&#8217;s foreign minister <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ceip.org\/files\/events\/events.asp?EventID=654\">doesn&#8217;t seem quite as confident<\/a> about this claim as Powell does.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\n<i>* Iraq [is not] an incubator for weapons of mass murder that could have fallen into terrorists&#8217; hands.<\/i> <\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s an interesting twist on the old argument. Iraq didn&#8217;t have weapons of mass destruction, it didn&#8217;t have the capacity to sell WMDs to anyone, and it doesn&#8217;t appear to have had WMD programs, but &#8212; never fear &#8212; Iraq was an &#8220;incubator&#8221; for such weapons. I feel better already.<\/p>\n<p><i>* [Al Queda&#8217;s] members are increasingly on the run, in hiding, in jail or dead.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Except for the <a href=\"http:\/\/msnbc.msn.com\/Default.aspx?id=3540595&#038;p1=01%7C%7C%2CUSVT0083%7C%3B028%7C002%7CWPTZ%7C%7C%7C00000080000000000PH%7C%7C%7C0002%7E00%40%7E08%7E2%7E04%7E01%7C0150&#038;p2=pi6%3D05452\">wave<\/a> of new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2003\/12\/29\/international\/asia\/29CND-AFGH.html\">bombings<\/a> the terrorist network has unleashed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Colin Powell wrote an op-ed for the New York Times yesterday that sought to mark New Year&#8217;s Day by &#8220;review[ing] the achievements of the year gone by and mak[ing] resolutions for the year ahead.&#8221; Fair enough.
