{"id":10412,"date":"2007-04-04T15:15:32","date_gmt":"2007-04-04T19:15:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thecarpetbaggerreport.com\/archives\/10412.html"},"modified":"2007-04-04T15:15:32","modified_gmt":"2007-04-04T19:15:32","slug":"dems-candidates-crush-gop-in-q1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stevebenen.com\/thecarpetbaggerreport\/dems-candidates-crush-gop-in-q1\/","title":{"rendered":"Dem candidates crush GOP in Q1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As impressive as Barack Obama&#8217;s first quarter fundraising is &#8212; and really, it&#8217;s astonishing &#8212; it&#8217;s also worth taking a step back and looking at how both parties are stacking up, in addition to the candidates.<\/p>\n<p>I was going to tally the numbers, but it looks like Eric Kleefeld already <a href=\"http:\/\/electioncentral.tpmcafe.com\/blog\/electioncentral\/2007\/apr\/04\/dem_candidates_clobber_gopers_in_dollar_amoungs_for_first_quarter_by_3_2_margins\">pulled the data together<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>Democratic Candidates<\/b><br \/>\nHillary Clinton &#8211; $26 million<br \/>\nBarack Obama &#8211; $25 million<br \/>\nJohn Edwards &#8211; $14 million<br \/>\nBill Richardson &#8211; $6 million<br \/>\nChris Dodd &#8211; $4 million<br \/>\nJoe Biden &#8211; $3 million<\/p>\n<p>Total: <b>$78 million<\/b><\/p>\n<p>(Note: No numbers have yet been reported from Dennis Kucinich.)<\/p>\n<p><b>Republican Candidates<\/b><br \/>\nMitt Romney &#8211; $23 million (including a loan of $2.35 million from Romney himself)<br \/>\nRudy Giuliani &#8211; $15 million<br \/>\nJohn McCain &#8211; $12.5 million<br \/>\nSam Brownback &#8211; $1.3 million<br \/>\nTom Tancredo &#8211; $1.3 million<br \/>\nMike Huckabee &#8211; $500,000<\/p>\n<p>Total: <b>$53.6 million<\/b><\/p>\n<p>(Note: No numbers have yet been reported from Duncan Hunter, Tommy Thompson, Ron Paul or Jim Gilmore)<\/p>\n<p>Their top six vs. our top six shows a nearly $25 million advantage &#8212; demonstrating a level of excitement, interest, and enthusiasm on the Democratic side of the aisle that just doesn&#8217;t exist among Republicans, who still don&#8217;t seem altogether pleased about their field of candidates. <\/p>\n<p>Sure, a lot can change over the next year and a half, but is it me or does it seem like Dems are looking forward to 2008 a hell of a lot more than the GOP?<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nAlso consider that the notion of a &#8220;donor class&#8221; in American politics seems to have disappeared altogether. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prospect.org\/weblog\/2007\/04\/post_3333.html#016138\">Mark Schmitt explains<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Gore and Bradley had 51,000 contributors between them; we know that Clinton and Obama have 160,000 donors between them; assume another 80,000 among the other four (proportionate to their dollars), and you have roughly a quintupling of the number of people willing to donate early to a Democratic presidential campaign.<\/p>\n<p>New money and new people &#8212; this is not your father&#8217;s Democratic Party!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I actually believe the number of donors this year is at least as impressive as the dollar amounts. Maximum contribution limits have gone up since 2000, so that might explain <i>a little<\/i> of the huge windfall, but the number of individual donors reflects a) the influence of the Internet; and b) a fundamental shift in how engaged Americans participate in the process.<\/p>\n<p>A year and a half before the next election, and just a few months after the last one, a <i>quarter of a million Americans<\/i> donated a total of $78 million to Democratic presidential candidates.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s never been anything like this level of involvement in campaign history.
