{"id":1069,"date":"2004-01-09T15:19:50","date_gmt":"2004-01-09T20:19:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thecarpetbaggerreport.com\/archives\/1069.html"},"modified":"2004-01-09T15:19:50","modified_gmt":"2004-01-09T20:19:50","slug":"a-blind-man-in-a-roomful-of-deaf-people","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stevebenen.com\/thecarpetbaggerreport\/a-blind-man-in-a-roomful-of-deaf-people\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;A blind man in a roomful of deaf people&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While introducing Paul O&#8217;Neill to the nation as his choice as Treasury Secretary in 2001, George W. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/news\/releases\/20010130-1.html\">Bush lauded O&#8217;Neill<\/a> as &#8220;a straight shooter.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Bush didn&#8217;t know the half of it.<\/p>\n<p>Proving that hell hath no fury like a Treasury Secretary scorned, O&#8217;Neill, who was pushed out of his job in December 2002 as part of an attempt to bring in a &#8220;fresh&#8221; economic team, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/articles\/A3792-2004Jan9.html\">has told CBS News<\/a> that Bush was so disengaged during Cabinet meetings that he was like a &#8220;blind man in a roomful of deaf people.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When Democrats say stuff like this, the GOP calls it &#8220;hate speech.&#8221; But remember, this is Bush&#8217;s own Republican Treasury Secretary.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently a little bitter about the way he was mistreated by the White House, O&#8217;Neill has written a tell-all book painting Bush as a know-nothing leader who discouraged and avoided substantive discussions.<\/p>\n<p>Relaying the story of his first meeting with the president, O&#8217;Neill said, &#8220;I went in with a long list of things to talk about and, I thought, to engage (Bush) on. &#8230; I was surprised it turned out me talking and the president just listening.
