{"id":10899,"date":"2007-05-24T11:58:34","date_gmt":"2007-05-24T15:58:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thecarpetbaggerreport.com\/archives\/10899.html"},"modified":"2007-05-24T11:58:34","modified_gmt":"2007-05-24T15:58:34","slug":"thursdays-political-round-up-107","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stevebenen.com\/thecarpetbaggerreport\/thursdays-political-round-up-107\/","title":{"rendered":"Thursday&#8217;s political round-up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today&#8217;s installment of campaign-related news items that wouldn&#8217;t generate a post of their own, but may be of interest to political observers:<\/p>\n<p>* A staffer for Hillary Clinton&#8217;s presidential campaign prepared a memo, which was leaked yesterday, suggesting the senator <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/05\/24\/us\/politics\/24strategy.html?ex=1337659200&#038;en=e81fb5c1c86a3998&#038;ei=5090&#038;partner=rssuserland&#038;emc=rss\">skip the Iowa caucuses<\/a> and concentrate on other early primary states. Clinton and top campaign officials said the memo was considered and rejected. &#8220;It&#8217;s not the opinion of the campaign,&#8221; Clinton told Radio Iowa yesterday, referring to the memo. &#8220;It&#8217;s not my opinion.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>* Rudy Giuliani and John Edwards <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/news\/wn_report\/2007\/05\/24\/2007-05-24_rudy_and_edwards_wage_their_own_war.html\">traded a series of shots<\/a> yesterday over whether the &#8220;war on terror&#8221; is legitimate or a political &#8220;bumper sticker.&#8221; Giuliani said Edwards is &#8220;not facing reality.&#8221; Edwards spokesman Eric Schultz said, &#8220;America deserves better from Rudy Giuliani. They deserve a President whose interest is in protecting America from terrorist attacks and not simply using this for political gain.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>* Mitt Romney has apparently decided that he can score points in the GOP primaries by <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bostonherald.com\/politics\/view.bg?articleid=1002848\">running against Massachusetts<\/a>, the state he led for one term. &#8220;In the most liberal state in the country,&#8221; a narrator says over pictures of photos of John Kerry and Mike Dukakis, &#8220;one Republican stood up, and cut spending instead of raising taxes. He enforced immigration laws, stood up for traditional marriage and the sanctity of human life.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>* Arizona State Rep. Russell Pierce (R) believes Sen. John McCain, who hasn&#8217;t cast a vote in weeks, and has even skipped supporting bills he sponsored, <a href=\"http:\/\/cliffschecter.blogspot.com\/2007\/05\/pearce-calls-for-mccain-to-resign-by.html\">should step down<\/a>. &#8220;We need a Senator,&#8221; Pearce said. &#8220;I think if McCain wants to be a full-time candidate and not be at the Senate, he ought to consider resigning.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>* Sen.
