The Des Moines Register&#8217;s top political analyst, after last night&#8217;s event, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmoinesregister.com\/apps\/pbcs.dll\/article?AID=2007706040341\">concluded<\/a>, &#8220;Edwards probably did himself the most good.&#8221; The Manchester Union Leader&#8217;s top political analyst <a href=\"http:\/\/unionleader.com\/article.aspx?headline=Analysts:+Edwards,+Richardson+fell+short+of+goals&#038;articleId=302eb5be-d0c9-49e3-a3ba-443e113afcaf\">concluded<\/a>, &#8220;John Edwards and Bill Richardson did not make as strong a showing as they had hoped in the Democratic Presidential debate yesterday.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>* Fred Thompson received a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/06\/03\/us\/politics\/03fred.html?ex=1338523200&#038;en=f6039efca3d1fa42&#038;ei=5090&#038;partner=rssuserland&#038;emc=rss\">warm welcome<\/a> at a fundraising dinner for the Virginia Republican Party over the weekend, offering up red meat &#8212; and little else &#8212; for the GOP faithful. Asked by a reporter afterwards what he would do as president, Thompson said, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.crooksandliars.com\/2007\/06\/03\/fred-thompson-wont-tell-us-what-hed-do-if-hes-president\/\">Well, I&#8217;d do lots of things<\/a>.&#8221; Asked if he was prepared to share some examples, he said, &#8220;No.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>* Rudy Giuliani&#8217;s allies in New Jersey appear anxious to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.suntimes.com\/news\/novak\/411672,CST-EDT-novak03.article\">give him a hand<\/a> when the state holds its primary on Feb. 5: &#8220;Supporters of Rudy Giuliani for president are changing New Jersey&#8217;s longtime proportional representation rules for allocating national convention delegates to winner-take-all, seeking a coup to give the former New York City mayor the lion&#8217;s share of the state&#8217;s 52 votes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>* Scandal-plagued Rep. Jerry Lewis (R-Calif.) may be exiting stage right next year. Bob Novak <a href=\"http:\/\/www.suntimes.com\/news\/novak\/411672,CST-EDT-novak03.article\">cited<\/a> GOP sources on the Hill saying Lewis probably won&#8217;t seek a 16th term, due to the series of ethics and legal scandals.<\/p>\n<p>* And Rep. Wayne Gilchrest (R-Md.), one of only four congressional Republicans to vote against Bush&#8217;s Iraq policy, is being rewarded <a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/leading-the-news\/gilchrest-primary-challenger-emerges-2007-05-25.html\">with a primary challenger<\/a>. State Sen.
