{"id":11292,"date":"2007-06-29T14:06:54","date_gmt":"2007-06-29T18:06:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thecarpetbaggerreport.com\/archives\/11292.html"},"modified":"2007-06-29T14:06:54","modified_gmt":"2007-06-29T18:06:54","slug":"obama-homophobic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stevebenen.com\/thecarpetbaggerreport\/obama-homophobic\/","title":{"rendered":"Obama homophobic?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have to admit, I&#8217;m puzzled by the reaction in some corners to what seemed like one of the more amusing and lighthearted moments of last night&#8217;s debate.<\/p>\n<p>NPR&#8217;s Michel Martin asked the candidates, &#8220;[W]hat is the plan to stop and to protect these young people from this scourge?&#8221; When it was Joe Biden&#8217;s turn, the senator suggested the key to combating AIDS is prevention: &#8220;I got tested for AIDS. I know Barack got tested for AIDS. There&#8217;s no shame in being tested for AIDS. It&#8217;s an important thing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The audience laughed nervously. When Biden was done with his answers, Obama, smiling, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/06\/28\/us\/politics\/29transcript.html?pagewanted=print\">interjected<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>OBAMA: Tavis, Tavis, Tavis, I just got to make clear &#8212; I got tested with <i>Michelle<\/i>. (Laughter, applause.)<\/p>\n<p>MR. SMILEY: Ah.<\/p>\n<p>SEN. OBAMA: In &#8212; when we were in Kenya in Africa. So I don&#8217;t want any confusion here about what&#8217;s going on. (Applause continues.)<\/p>\n<p>MR. SMILEY: All right.<\/p>\n<p>SEN. BIDEN: And I got tested to save my life, because I had 13 pints of blood transfusion.<\/p>\n<p>SEN. OBAMA: I was tested with my wife.<\/p>\n<p>MR. SMILEY: And I&#8217;m sure Michelle appreciates you clarifying it.<\/p>\n<p>SEN. OBAMA: In public. (Laughter.)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Everyone laughed; the debate continued. Today, however, Obama is being accused of homophobia, which strikes me as off-base.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nTNR&#8217;s Alexander M. Belenky <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tnr.com\/blog\/the_plank?pid=121547\">said<\/a> Obama &#8220;doesn&#8217;t want anyone to get the impression that he&#8217;s on the down-low.&#8221; Lane Hudson <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/lane-hudson\/baracks-frat-boy-moment_b_54369.html\">said<\/a> it was a &#8220;frat-boy moment,&#8221; adding that Obama revealed &#8220;some level of homophobia.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>My take on it was entirely different. Obama seemed to be saying that Biden&#8217;s comment might have left the impression that he got an AIDS test because he&#8217;d had sex with someone else. But why assume he was referring to a man? Isn&#8217;t it just as likely Obama wanted to &#8220;clarify&#8221; so that no one would think he&#8217;d had an affair with another woman?<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, in his own answer to the question about combatting AIDS, Obama stated his belief that the African-American community often doesn&#8217;t confront the issue as directly as it should. &#8220;It has been an aspect of sometimes homophobia that we don&#8217;t address this issue as clearly as it needs to be.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The criticism strikes me as misplaced.
