Such a person could help bolster Giuliani&#8217;s conservative bona fides, prove that he could garner institutional support on McCain&#8217;s turf, and point to Giuliani&#8217;s potential appeal in the region where he&#8217;s weakest.<\/p>\n<p>Just such a person stepped up: Sen. David Vitter (R-La.), the same family-values <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecarpetbaggerreport.com\/archives\/11391.html\">conservative\/adulterer<\/a> who once argued that an extra-marital affair is grounds for <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2007\/07\/10\/vitter-flashback-clinton-should-resign\/\">resignation<\/a>. As of yesterday, Vitter was not only Giuliani&#8217;s top Senate backer, he was also the regional chairman of Giuliani&#8217;s campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Now, is Giuliani responsible for Vitter&#8217;s immoral hypocrisy? Of course not. There&#8217;s no way one serial adulterer could know about another serial adulterer&#8217;s private affairs.<\/p>\n<p>That said, I can&#8217;t help but notice that the former NYC mayor has had some remarkably bad luck picking his friends:<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\n* Giuliani inexplicably backed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.talkleft.com\/story\/2004\/12\/13\/180\/21101\">Bernie Kerik<\/a>, and made him the city&#8217;s police commissioner, <i>after<\/i> he&#8217;d been briefed on Kerik&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/03\/30\/us\/politics\/30rudy.html?ex=1332907200&#038;en=2f385ebdf2a2f93e&#038;ei=5090&#038;partner=rssuserland&#038;emc=rss\">organized crime connections<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>* <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2007\/POLITICS\/06\/19\/treasurer.indicted.ap\/index.html\">Thomas Ravenel<\/a>, the chairman of Giuliani&#8217;s presidential campaign in South Carolina, was indicted on cocaine distribution charges.<\/p>\n<p>* <a href=\"http:\/\/electioncentral.tpmcafe.com\/blog\/electioncentral\/2007\/jun\/25\/rudys_new_sc_chair_has_history_of_racially_charged_remarks\">Arthur Ravenel<\/a>, the replacement chairman of Giuliani&#8217;s presidential campaign in South Carolina, has characterized the NAACP as the &#8220;National Association for Retarded People,&#8221; and has an unusual fondness for the Confederate battle flag.<\/p>\n<p>* <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecarpetbaggerreport.com\/archives\/11227.html\">Alan Placa<\/a> was accused by a grand jury report of sexually abusing children, as well as helping cover up the sexual abuse of children by other priests. Giuliani then put Placa, his life-long friend, on the payroll of Giuliani Partners.
