{"id":14051,"date":"2007-12-27T09:10:43","date_gmt":"2007-12-27T14:10:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thecarpetbaggerreport.com\/archives\/14051.html"},"modified":"2007-12-27T09:10:43","modified_gmt":"2007-12-27T14:10:43","slug":"benazir-bhutto-reportedly-killed-in-pakistan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stevebenen.com\/thecarpetbaggerreport\/benazir-bhutto-reportedly-killed-in-pakistan\/","title":{"rendered":"Benazir Bhutto reportedly killed in Pakistan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.msn.com\/id\/22406555\/\">Stunning news<\/a> out of Pakistan this morning:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Pakistan opposition leader Benazir Bhutto was assassinated Thursday in a suicide bombing that also killed at least 20 others at a campaign rally, a party aide and a military official said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At 6:16 p.m. she expired,&#8221; said Wasif Ali Khan, a member of Bhutto&#8217;s party who was at Rawalpindi General Hospital where she was taken after the attack.<\/p>\n<p>A senior military official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to comment, confirmed that Bhutto had died.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Widespread unrest in Pakistan is practically inevitable, and Bhutto supporters outside the hospital where she was treated began chanting &#8220;Dog, Musharraf, dog,&#8221; in reference to Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf.<\/p>\n<p>Musharraf, of course, had promised free parliamentary elections next month, coinciding with the end of his &#8220;emergency rule,&#8221; though, given Bhutto&#8217;s reported assassination, the country may be poised to endure additional turmoil.<\/p>\n<p>News accounts vary on whether the killing has been officially confirmed, though the <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/s\/ap\/20071227\/ap_on_re_as\/pakistan;_ylt=AuA8OiYvht83XVVXtibP8l6s0NUE\">AP quoted<\/a> Bhutto&#8217;s lawyer, Babar Awan, saying, &#8220;The surgeons confirmed that she has been martyred.&#8221; Wasif Ali Khan, a member of Bhutto&#8217;s party who was at Rawalpindi General Hospital where she was taken after the attack, added, &#8220;At 6:16 p.m. she expired.&#8221;<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\n<i>Update<\/i>: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tpmmuckraker.com\/archives\/004984.php\">Spencer Ackerman<\/a> spoke with NYU&#8217;s Barnett Rubin, a South Asia expert.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Bhutto&#8217;s assassination presents an opportunity for Musharraf. &#8220;It&#8217;s very possible Musharraf will declare [another] state of emergency and postpone the elections,&#8221; Rubin continues. &#8220;That will confirm in many people&#8217;s minds the idea that the military is behind&#8221; the assassination. For it&#8217;s part, the U.S. will likely &#8220;be scrambling to say the election either needs to be held as planned or postponed rather than canceled, but Musharraf is in a position to preempt that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As a result, Rubin says, U.S. strategy is &#8220;in tatters.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Ackerman adds, &#8220;The most likely culprit is the Pakistani Taliban and al-Qaeda.
