{"id":14213,"date":"2008-01-12T11:43:05","date_gmt":"2008-01-12T16:43:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thecarpetbaggerreport.com\/archives\/14213.html"},"modified":"2008-01-12T11:43:05","modified_gmt":"2008-01-12T16:43:05","slug":"another-democrat-dons-the-kick-me-sign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stevebenen.com\/thecarpetbaggerreport\/another-democrat-dons-the-kick-me-sign\/","title":{"rendered":"Another Democrat Dons the &#8220;Kick Me&#8221; Sign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Guest post by <a href=\"http:\/\/nomoremister.blogspot.com\">Steve M.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>On the op-ed page of today&#8217;s <em>New York Times,<\/em> Francis Wilkinson, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/francis-wilkinson\">blog editor<\/a> (<strong>UPDATE:<\/strong> actually former blog editor) of the Huffington Post (the <em>Times<\/em> IDs him as &#8220;a former Democratic consultant&#8221;), makes note of an apparent lull in partisan sniping on the part of Republican candidates.\u00a0 Mistaking this for a cease-fire, Wilkinson <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/01\/12\/opinion\/12wilkinson.html\">proposes unilateral disarmament:<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Fighting to Lose <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8230;On the trail, Mrs. Clinton has assured voters that she is the only Democratic candidate who has been &#8220;vetted&#8221; and shown capable of withstanding the right-wing attack machine. But that machine has grown curiously quiet of late.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In the Republican races in Iowa and New Hampshire, the harsh partisan noise of the past two decades grew faint.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8230; on Tuesday, John McCain seized victory in the Republican primary in New Hampshire after a campaign essentially devoid of attacks on Democrats&#8230;.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Could Hillary Clinton retool her image and campaign to prevail against a Republican who attacks with love bombs instead of wedge issues? &#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Maybe Wilkinson has a point about the closing days of the New Hampshire contest, but let&#8217;s go back to distant, long-forgotten days &#8212; i.e., this past fall.<!--more-->Remember the Florida GOP debate in October &#8212; the one that led to the AP headline <a href=\"http:\/\/apnews.myway.com\/article\/20071022\/D8SE55280.html\">&#8220;GOP Hopefuls Pile on Clinton&#8221;<\/a>? Giuliani attacked her. Romney attacked her.\u00a0 Even that nice Mike Huckabee (nicely) attacked her.And John McCain, he of the &#8220;love bombs,&#8221; specifically attacked her for supporting funding for a Woodstock museum.\u00a0 He got an ovation for that &#8212; so he brought it up again in <a href=\"http:\/\/hotair.com\/archives\/2007\/10\/24\/video-mccain-milking-the-hillary-woodstock-earmark-for-all-its-worth\/\">an ad.<\/a> And then <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.washingtonpost.com\/channel-08\/2007\/10\/ad_watch_another_one_from_wood.html\">another ad.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Oh, and this was around the same time a voter at a McCain event asked, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/huff-wires\/20071114\/mccain-clinton-comment\">&#8220;How do we beat the b&#8211;ch?&#8221;<\/a> Before making a pro forma statement of respect for Clinton, McCain laughed and said this was <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.villagevoice.com\/runninscared\/archives\/2007\/11\/mccain_calls_ho.php\">&#8220;an excellent question.&#8221;<\/a> He never chastised the voter.<\/p>\n<p>If the Republicans mellowed out in the days before the voting took place in New Hampshire, it was for two reasons only: (1) New Hampshire is an increasingly moderate-to-liberal state that allows crossover voting and (2) Republicans weren&#8217;t sure which Democrat they should treat as an Antichrist.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the hit of the first post-New Hampshire debate this week in the new, mellow, love-bombing GOP was Fred Thompson, who <a href=\"http:\/\/www.memeorandum.com\/080111\/p11#a080111p11\">lashed out at liberalism<\/a> on the part of all sorts of people, particularly fellow Republican Mike Huckabee.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Wilkinson, the GOP is not becoming mellow, and this will not be a nice race, no matter who the Democratic candidate is.\u00a0 The only place modern Republicans bury hatchets is in Democrats&#8217; (or insufficiently doctrinaire Republicans&#8217;) backs.<\/p>\n<p><em>(Cross-posted at <a href=\"http:\/\/nomoremister.blogspot.com\">No More Mister Nice Blog.<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Guest post by Steve M.
