A few months ago, there was a spate of retirement announcements among House Republicans, but it wasn’t too<\/i> big a deal. The announcements were a little early, but the numbers were in line with normal turnover that happens in practically every cycle.<\/p>\n
But what started as a modest trend is starting to look like an exodus. At this point, House Republican incumbents are fleeing from the House as if it were on fire. The latest is Rep. Tom Davis<\/a> (R-Va.)<\/p>\n Republican Rep. Tom Davis of Virginia is expected to announce that he will not seek reelection next fall during a press conference Wednesday afternoon, according to a Republican with close ties to the Virginia congressman.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n Davis’ retirement announcement comes just one day after Rep. Ron Lewis<\/a> (R-Ken.) said that he, too, is stepping down. And Lewis’ announcement came just one day after Rep. Kenny Hulshof<\/a> (R-Mo.) said he would also give up his seat this year.<\/p>\n Wait, it gets better. In all, there are now 28<\/i> House Republicans who will not seek re-election (about 14% of the House GOP caucus) — including five retirement announcements in five days.<\/p>\n One almost gets the sense that Republican lawmakers a) aren’t fond of being in the minority; and b) aren’t confident that ’08 will be a GOP year.<\/p>\n It couldn’t have happened to a more appropriate group of guys.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" A few months ago, there was a spate of retirement announcements among House Republicans, but it wasn’t too big a deal.
