Seriously.<\/p>\n<p>When Stephen Colbert brought up the subject, Matthews stopped smiling, stopped joking around, and responded, &#8220;Did you ever want to be something your whole life?&#8221; He added, &#8220;Well, it&#8217;s something you grow up, and you want &#8212; some kids want to be a fireman. I want to be a senator.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Colbert responded, &#8220;That&#8217;s an announcement,&#8221; and Matthews didn&#8217;t make any effort to contradict him.<\/p>\n<p><embed FlashVars=\"videoId=165840\" src='http:\/\/www.comedycentral.com\/sitewide\/video_player\/view\/default\/swf.jhtml' quality='high' bgcolor='#cccccc' width='332' height='316' name='comedy_central_player' align='middle' allowScriptAccess='always' allownetworking='external' type='application\/x-shockwave-flash' pluginspage='http:\/\/www.macromedia.com\/go\/getflashplayer'><\/embed><\/p>\n<p>Of course, Matthews is talking about Arlen Specter&#8217;s seat, and he apparently isn&#8217;t planning to give it up anytime soon.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nUnfortunately, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/04\/16\/us\/16brfs-SPECTERANNOU_BRF.html?ref=Washington\">Specter&#8217;s cancer has returned<\/a>&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A statement released by his office said that a medical scan, followed by a biopsy, had detected an early recurrence of Hodgkin&#8217;s disease, which is a cancer of the lymph system. Mr. Specter, 78, a Republican from Pennsylvania, was treated for the same type of cancer in 2005 and was later given a clean bill of health. &#8220;I was surprised by the PET scan findings because I have been feeling so good,&#8221; Mr. Specter said in the statement. &#8220;I consider this just another bump on the road to a successful recovery from Hodgkin&#8217;s, from which I&#8217;ve been symptom-free for three years.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8230;but he&#8217;s still <a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/leading-the-news\/specter-committed-to-running-for-another-term-2008-04-16.html\">planning to seek re-election<\/a> in 2010.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) said Wednesday that his recurrence of Hodgkin&#8217;s disease would not affect his decision to run for reelection in 2010, when he will be 80 years old. [&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p>He said he has received well-wishes from his Senate colleagues, but added that he expects his political opponents to use his health problems against him in the future.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And do I think the Democrats will exploit it if they have an opportunity? Yes, I would expect them to,&#8221; Specter said. &#8220;I just don&#8217;t anticipate giving them any opportunity.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Would Matthews challenge Specter? Would Matthews run as a Democrat?
