George McGovern, the Dems&#8217; 1972 presidential nominee, this morning became the first prominent Clinton supporter to <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/s\/ap\/mcgovern_clinton;_ylt=AsTaJbFSGbC3PHM4axk34U6s0NUE\">urge her to drop out<\/a> of the race. McGovern added that he will switch his endorsement to Obama.<\/p>\n<p>* Estimates vary, but it appears Obama&#8217;s net gain among pledged delegates last night was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/blogs\/bensmith\/0508\/Seyfangs_estimate_Obama_gains_15.html\">about 15<\/a>, increasing his already large lead.<\/p>\n<p>* I haven&#8217;t heard of any new superdelegate announcements this morning, but yesterday, Jeanette Council, a county commissioner in North Carolina, threw her support <a href=\"http:\/\/projects.newsobserver.com\/under_the_dome\/council_backs_obama\">to Obama<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>* AmericaBlog <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americablog.com\/2008\/05\/breaking-wesley-clark-reportedly-called.html\">reported<\/a> last night that retired Gen. Wesley Clark, another high-profile Clinton backer, &#8220;called Hillary tonight to tell her it&#8217;s over.&#8221; [<i>Update<\/i>: Clark&#8217;s office <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/blogs\/bensmith\/\">denies<\/a> that this call happened.)<\/p>\n<p>* Hoping to find some good news in yesterday&#8217;s North Carolina primary, chief Clinton strategist Geoff Garin emphasized this morning Clinton&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/tpmelectioncentral.talkingpointsmemo.com\/2008\/05\/hillary_chief_strategist_north.php\">success with white people<\/a>: &#8220;Garin argued that the North Carolina contest, which Obama won by 14 points, represented &#8216;progress&#8217; for Hillary because she did better among white voters there than she did in Virginia. &#8216;When we began in North Carolina,&#8217; Garin said, &#8216;our internal polling and in much of the public polling we were running exactly even with white voters.'&#8221;<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\n* Did Rush Limbaugh have any real influence on the results in yesterday&#8217;s primaries? MSNBC took a closer look and concluded <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crooksandliars.com\/2008\/05\/06\/exit-polls-confirm-operation-chaos-abject-failure\/\">he did not<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>* John McCain will obviously be the GOP nominee, but in yesterday&#8217;s perfunctory primaries, about a fourth of Republicans still <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/blogs\/jonathanmartin\/0508\/Republicans_voting_for_somebody_other_than_McCain.html\">voted for someone else<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>* While the voting was still going on yesterday, the Obama campaign indicated that it has reached <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/blogs\/bensmith\/0508\/Another_money_milestone.html\">1.5 million individual donors<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>* <a href=\"http:\/\/hotlineblog.nationaljournal.com\/archives\/2008\/05\/mccains_judicia.html\">Hotline<\/a>: &#8220;John McCain announced [yesterday] the members of his campaign&#8217;s Justice Advisory Committee. Translation &#8212; The very folks who would help a President McCain select nominees to the SUPCO and federal courts. Heading up the effort are Theodore B. Olson, former Solicitor General of the United States, and KS Senator Sam Brownback.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>* Obama will be in DC tomorrow for a series of meetings <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.suntimes.com\/sweet\/2008\/05\/obama_meeting_with_superdelega.html\">with uncommitted superdelegates<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>* Clinton spokesperson Howard Wolfson said this morning that there have been &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/tpmelectioncentral.talkingpointsmemo.com\/2008\/05\/wolfson_there_have_been_no_dis.php\">no discussions<\/a>&#8221; about ending the race.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today&#8217;s installment of campaign-related news items that wouldn&#8217;t generate a post of their own, but may be of interest to political observers: * Former South Dakota Sen.
