{"id":15586,"date":"2008-05-19T12:00:56","date_gmt":"2008-05-19T16:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thecarpetbaggerreport.com\/archives\/15586.html"},"modified":"2008-05-19T12:00:56","modified_gmt":"2008-05-19T16:00:56","slug":"mondays-campaign-round-up-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stevebenen.com\/thecarpetbaggerreport\/mondays-campaign-round-up-19\/","title":{"rendered":"Monday&#8217;s campaign round-up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today&#8217;s installment of campaign-related news items that wouldn&#8217;t generate a post of their own, but may be of interest to political observers:<\/p>\n<p>* There was some additional movement on the delegate front over the weekend, with Obama picking up Maryland superdelegate Greg Pecoraro, and add-on delegates in Colorado and Kansas. In California, Clinton picked up three add-on delegates, and Obama got two. In all, Obama had a net gain of two (five for him, three for Clinton) over the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>* Obama got <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/blogs\/bensmith\/0508\/WA_Chair_for_Obama.html\">one more<\/a> this morning, with support from Washington State Democratic Party Chairman Dwight Pelz.<\/p>\n<p>* When Obama drew a crowd of 35,000 in Philadelphia last month, I assumed that would be the biggest political rally of the year. It never occurred to me that <a href=\"http:\/\/thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com\/2008\/05\/18\/obama-draws-record-crowd-in-oregon\/\">75,000 people<\/a> would show up for an event in Portland, Oregon, but they did. (If you haven&#8217;t seen the pictures, they are quite a sight.)<\/p>\n<p>* The DNC launched a very worthwhile project today: &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mccainpedia.org\/index.php\/Main_Page\">McCainpedia.org<\/a> is a wiki run by the DNC&#8217;s Research, Communications, and Internet teams. The goal is to centralize research material, allowing the general public to use it as they see fit. Unlike some wikis, McCainpedia is read-only and can&#8217;t be edited by the public. This allows us to fully validate all of the information that appears, ensuring accuracy and reliability.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>* Last week, the Tennessee Republican Party went after Michelle Obama. Today, Barack Obama <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abcnews.go.com\/GMA\/Vote2008\/story?id=4881883&#038;page=1\">expressed his displeasure<\/a>. &#8220;If they think that they&#8217;re going to try to make Michelle an issue in this campaign, they should be careful, because that I find unacceptable &#8212; the notion that you start attacking my wife or my family,&#8221; he said. Obama added that the attack was &#8220;low class.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>* The latest <a href=\"http:\/\/tpmelectioncentral.talkingpointsmemo.com\/2008\/05\/poll_obama_way_behind_in_kentu.php\">polls from Suffolk University<\/a> show Clinton leading big in Kentucky, and Obama with a narrow lead in Oregon.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\n* Mike Huckabee would love to be John McCain&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/news\/politics\/2008\/05\/18\/2008-05-18_mike_huckabee_says_he_would_like_to_be_j.html\">running mate<\/a>. What a surprise.<\/p>\n<p>* McCain isn&#8217;t doing too well on the fundraising front, so he&#8217;ll be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/05\/19\/us\/politics\/19donate.html?_r=1&#038;hp&#038;oref=slogin\">relying on the Republican National Committee<\/a> for support for the rest of the campaign.<\/p>\n<p>* McCain&#8217;s self-deprecating jokes about his age on &#8220;Saturday Night Live&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonmonthly.com\/archives\/individual\/2008_05\/013745.php\">may not<\/a> have been a great idea.<\/p>\n<p>* Greg Sargent reports on some of the <a href=\"http:\/\/tpmelectioncentral.talkingpointsmemo.com\/2008\/05\/edwards_secured_private_commit.php\">behind-the-scenes talks<\/a> that led to John Edwards&#8217; withdrawal from the race in January. [corrected]<\/p>\n<p>* On a related note, Elizabeth Edwards <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/stories\/0508\/10434.html\">rejected speculation<\/a> yesterday that she might endorse Clinton.<\/p>\n<p>* Jim Webb didn&#8217;t rule out the VP slot during a &#8220;Meet the Press&#8221; interview yesterday, but he <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/article\/20080519\/NATION\/340031964\/1001\">didn&#8217;t sound like he&#8217;s interested<\/a>, either.<\/p>\n<p>* The latest Minneapolis <a href=\"http:\/\/www.startribune.com\/politics\/national\/senate\/19055704.html?location_refer=Homepage\">Star-Tribune poll<\/a> shows Sen. Norm Coleman (R) continuing to lead Al Franken (D) in one of the year&#8217;s key Senate contests, 51% to 44%. (thanks to B.D. for the heads-up)<\/p>\n<p>* In other Senate news, Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich (D) leads Sen.
