John McCain was for national emissions standards before he was against them<\/a>. (thanks to T.D. and R.P. for the tip)<\/p>\n

U.S. Sen. John McCain backtracked Friday on a pledge to set national auto emissions standards that would supersede those California and other states want to set.<\/p>\n

“I guess at the end of the day, I support the states being able to do that,” he said at a town hall meeting at the GM Technical Center.<\/p>\n

The statement appears to contradict a statement McCain made to The Detroit News last month, when he said he hoped to set a national standard that would make state standards unnecessary. […]<\/p>\n

The auto emissions issue is a huge one for car makers, which say allowing states to set their own standards would cost them billions of dollars.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

One of the employees at the GM Technical Center told the Detroit News that McCain is “politicking for votes, so he’s going to be telling us all kinds of things.”<\/p>\n

Yeah, he does that a lot<\/a>.

\nAnd as long as we’re on the subject of Jukebox John, McCain told the NAACP this week that he will “fully fund” the No Child Left Behind Act:<\/p>\n

McCain has always opposed<\/a> “fully funding” the No Child Left Behind Act, and shortly after McCain made his commitment the NAACP audience, a campaign aide told reporters that McCain would only commit to “continuing the funding for No Child Left Behind,” not fully funding it.<\/p>\n
