{"id":1938,"date":"2004-06-15T09:29:20","date_gmt":"2004-06-15T14:29:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thecarpetbaggerreport.com\/archives\/1938.html"},"modified":"2004-06-15T09:29:20","modified_gmt":"2004-06-15T14:29:20","slug":"there-he-goes-again-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stevebenen.com\/thecarpetbaggerreport\/there-he-goes-again-2\/","title":{"rendered":"There he goes again"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The non-existent connection between Saddam Hussein and al Queda is obviously Dick Cheney&#8217;s favorite lie &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/wire\/Politics\/ap20040615_10.html\">he keeps repeating it<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Vice President Dick Cheney said Monday that Saddam Hussein had &#8220;long-established ties&#8221; with al Qaida, an assertion that has been repeatedly challenged by some policy experts and lawmakers.<\/p>\n<p>The vice president offered no details backing up his claim of a link between Saddam and al Qaida.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He was a patron of terrorism,&#8221; Cheney said of Hussein during a speech before The James Madison Institute, a conservative think-tank based in Florida. &#8220;He had long established ties with al Qaida.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The man simply has no shame. It&#8217;s one thing to lie; it&#8217;s another thing to lie and get caught; it&#8217;s something altogether worse to continue to repeat the lie ad nauseum.<\/p>\n<p>Cheney was making the same argument <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/articles\/A249-2004Apr9.html\">in April<\/a> in a speech to troops in Alaska, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/display_pages\/features\/feature_1610113.html\">in January<\/a> on NPR, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/news\/966470.asp\">in September<\/a> on Meet the Press. He seems to sincerely believe that repeating <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanprogress.org\/site\/pp.asp?c=biJRJ8OVF&#038;b=23816\">an obvious falsehood<\/a> makes it more accurate. It&#8217;s breathtaking.<\/p>\n<p>And as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailykos.com\/story\/2004\/6\/14\/232016\/097\">Kos noted<\/a> last night, even Colin Powell, Bush&#8217;s Secretary of State, has said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.truthout.org\/docs_04\/011004A.shtml\">the claim is false<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Secretary of State Colin L. Powell conceded Thursday that despite his assertions to the United Nations last year, he had no &#8220;smoking gun&#8221; proof of a link between the government of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein and terrorists of Al Qaeda. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have not seen smoking-gun, concrete evidence about the connection,&#8221; Mr. Powell said, in response to a question at a news conference.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s no wonder <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/ac2\/wp-dyn?pagename=article&#038;node=&#038;contentId=A32862-2003Sep5&#038;notFound=true\">so many Americans believe<\/a> Saddam Hussein was involved with 9\/11; their vice president keeps lying to them about it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The non-existent connection between Saddam Hussein and al Queda is obviously Dick Cheney&#8217;s favorite lie &#8212; he keeps repeating it.
