Rodney &#8220;Turncoat&#8221; Alexander&#8217;s last-minute party switch has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/articles\/A26401-2004Aug23.html\">succeeded<\/a>, at least for now.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A state judge ruled Monday that the sign-up period should be reopened for the Nov. 2 election in Louisiana&#8217;s 5th Congressional District, where incumbent Rep. Rodney Alexander infuriated Democrats by switching to the Republican Party minutes before the qualifying deadline. <\/p>\n<p>District Judge Allen Edwards did not set a date for the new sign-up period in his Monday ruling. He said the new dates should be set after appeals &#8211; which are likely &#8211; have been exhausted. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Mr. Alexander has attempted to subvert the electoral process for his own personal gain,&#8221; Edwards said. &#8220;His action deprived voters of the right to vote for a Democratic candidate.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He sure did. The ruling may still be appealed and it&#8217;s unclear which Dem might jump in the race if given the chance, but for today, it&#8217;s a victory.<\/p>\n<p>Stay tuned.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A lawsuit challenging Rep.
