{"id":3479,"date":"2005-02-03T11:01:32","date_gmt":"2005-02-03T16:01:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thecarpetbaggerreport.com\/archives\/3479.html"},"modified":"2005-02-03T11:01:32","modified_gmt":"2005-02-03T16:01:32","slug":"say-hello-to-the-birth-tax","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stevebenen.com\/thecarpetbaggerreport\/say-hello-to-the-birth-tax\/","title":{"rendered":"Say hello to the &#8216;birth tax&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sorry to keep heaping effusive praise on Harry Reid, but he keeps doing things worthy of effusive praise.<\/p>\n<p>While it&#8217;s likely that the Dem response to Bush&#8217;s State of the Union was watched by a much smaller audience than that of the president, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/ac2\/wp-dyn\/A58998-2005Feb2?language=printer\">Reid unveiled<\/a> a great new repackaging-line that will likely become a mainstay of Dem rhetoric for a long while.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Too many of the president&#8217;s economic policies have left Americans and American companies struggling. And after we worked so hard to eliminate the deficit, his policies have added trillions to the debt &#8212; in effect, a &#8216;birth tax&#8217; of $36,000 on every child that is born.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Why didn&#8217;t I think of that?<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s easy to argue, as all of us often do, that it&#8217;s a disgrace for Bush to rack up trillions of dollars in debt that serves as a drain on economic growth and hands future generations a bill that they shouldn&#8217;t have to pay. That said, we&#8217;ve never used a handy little slogan &#8212; until now. <\/p>\n<p>Republicans can whine about the so-called &#8220;death tax,&#8221; which only affects their millionaire donors, but all the while, these same Republicans keep raising the &#8220;birth tax&#8221; every year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sorry to keep heaping effusive praise on Harry Reid, but he keeps doing things worthy of effusive praise.
