It&#8217;s worse when you realize that Bolton doesn&#8217;t even believe the United Nations <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/index.php?p=390\">should exist<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In 1994, for example, he charged, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/observer.guardian.co.uk\/iraq\/story\/0,12239,873093,00.html\">There&#8217;s no such thing as the United Nations<\/a>,&#8221; saying that &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.clw.org\/bush\/opposebolton.html\">If the U.N. secretary building in New York lost 10 stories, it wouldn&#8217;t make a bit of difference<\/a>.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>Four years later, he attacked the international body again, saying, &#8220;many Republicans in Congress &#8212; and perhaps a majority &#8212; not only do not care about losing the General Assembly vote but actually see it as a &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.clw.org\/bush\/opposebolton.html\">make my day<\/a>&#8216; outcome. Indeed, once the vote is lost, and the adverse consequences predicted by the U.N.&#8217;s supporters begin to occur, this will simply provide further evidence to many why nothing more should be paid to the U.N. system.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In other words, Bush&#8217;s choice to represent all of us at the U.N. would prefer that the institution lose power, influence, and the United States&#8217; annual dues.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s like picking <a href=\"http:\/\/www.house.gov\/judiciary_democrats\/bobjonesdc2.htm\">Bob Jones<\/a> to be the U.S. ambassador to the <a href=\"http:\/\/vatican.usembassy.it\/\">Holy See<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s bad enough that Bush has named John Bolton as the next U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.
