For all the left’s efforts to paint the Republicans and their base as radical extremists, there’s just no substitute for a leading right-wing voice going on national television to confirm everything we’ve been saying for years.

I’m referring of course, to Robertson’s appearance yesterday on ABC’s “This Week with George Stephanopoulos.” My friends at Crooks & Liars have posted the video, which I strongly recommend. Indeed, I’d also suggest the DNC send out copies of the interview to as many people as possible with a short note that reads, “See? This is what today’s Republican Party looks like.”

I won’t bother reprinting the entire transcript, but the highlights include:

* Robertson agreed with some his earlier statements that only Christians and Jews are qualified to serve in American government

* He suggested Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is a communist because she worked for the ACLU

* Robertson insisted that federal judges who fail to share his worldview are a greater threat to the fabric of America than terrorism today, Nazis during WWII, and the Civil War

* He dismissed the significance of the 9/11 terrorists as “a few bearded-terrorists who fly into buildings”

Robertson didn’t even seem embarrassed by such lunacy; he was proud of his beliefs and presented them as if they were obvious truths. We can only hope he’ll be invited to make similar appearances on other networks every week.

One more thing: before you dismiss Robertson as a loony has-been whose opinions no longer matter, please note that he remains a powerful figure in GOP circles. For example, in 2003, just weeks before the war in Iraq started, Bush met with Robertson and discussed the invasion. Tune into Robertson’s “700 Club” program on any given day and you’ll see high-ranking Republican officials from Congress and the Bush administration chatting about today’s biggest issues.

Robertson may be stark raving mad, but his influence within his party is still strong, which makes yesterday’s televised lunacy all the more significant.

If Dems are really lucky, TV preacher Pat Robertson will be a mainstay on the Sunday-morning talk shows from now on.
