{"id":536,"date":"2003-08-21T10:13:53","date_gmt":"2003-08-21T15:13:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thecarpetbaggerreport.com\/archives\/536.html"},"modified":"2003-08-21T10:13:53","modified_gmt":"2003-08-21T15:13:53","slug":"us-budget-deficit-as-expected-continues-to-soar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stevebenen.com\/thecarpetbaggerreport\/us-budget-deficit-as-expected-continues-to-soar\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. budget deficit, as expected, continues to soar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The federal government&#8217;s budget deficit for the month of July <a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/news\/wire\/2003\/08\/19\/deficit\/\">reached $54.2 billion<\/a>, almost double the deficit for July 2002.<\/p>\n<p>This means, for the year so far, <a href=\"http:\/\/story.news.yahoo.com\/news?tmpl=story&#038;cid=580&#038;ncid=580&#038;e=2&#038;u=\/nm\/20030819\/bs_nm\/economy_usa_budget_dc\">the deficit is $324 billion<\/a>. This easily eclipses the old record of $290 billion from the final year of the other President Bush&#8217;s term.<\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind, of course, the year isn&#8217;t over yet.<\/p>\n<p>At this rate, the Bush administration will have little trouble reaching the projections of a $400 billion deficit this year.<\/p>\n<p>And for those of you keeping score at home, when Bush took office there was a $236 billion surplus, handed to him on a silver platter by President Clinton. In his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/news\/releases\/2001\/02\/20010228.html\">first address to Congress<\/a> &#8212; less than three years ago &#8212; he described deficits as &#8220;dangerous&#8221; and promised to pay down &#8220;an unprecedented amount of our national debt.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Record deficits in record time. Bush should be very proud.
