Jon Corzine&#8217;s (D) lead in the polls is bouncing back nicely. A new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rasmussenreports.com\/2005\/New Jersey Governor_October 19.htm\">Rasmussen poll<\/a> shows Corzine leading Doug Forrester by nine (49% to 40%), which is up from seven points two weeks ago. Similarly, a new Monmouth University\/Gannett New Jersey poll has Corzine up, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.courierpostonline.com\/apps\/pbcs.dll\/article?AID=\/20051021\/NEWS01\/510210373\/1006\">45% to 38%<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>* Fueling rumors that Sen. Trent Lott (R-Miss.) may be contemplating retirement, he raised <a href=\"http:\/\/politicalwire.com\/archives\/2005\/10\/20\/lotts_slow_fundraising_raises_questions.html\">less than $27,000<\/a> in the last quarter.<\/p>\n<p>* Radiologist J.R. Damron (R), a first-time political candidate, announced this week that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lamonitor.com\/articles\/2005\/10\/17\/headline_news\/news16.txt\">he will take on<\/a> New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson (D) next year. Damron will face another novice, the Rev. George Bailey Jr., in a GOP primary.<\/p>\n<p>* Jim Gibson (D), a lawyer and the mayor of Henderson, Nevada&#8217;s second-largest city, announced yesterday that he is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/nationworld\/politics\/wire\/sns-ap-brf-nevada-governor,1,3722180.story?coll=sns-ap-politics-headlines\">running for governor<\/a> next year. He&#8217;ll face State Sen. Dina Titus (D) in a primary, while Rep. Jim Gibbons, Lt. Gov. Lorraine Hunt, and state Sen. Bob Beers will compete in a GOP primary.<\/p>\n<p>* Republicans in Massachusetts have finally found an opponent for Sen. Edward Kennedy next year. Businessman Kevin Scott (R) <a href=\"http:\/\/biz.yahoo.com\/prnews\/051020\/phth010.html?.v=28\">announced his candidacy<\/a> this week. <\/p>\n<p>* In Alaska, Former Wasilla Mayor Sarah Palin (R) announced this week that she will <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adn.com\/news\/alaska\/story\/7106290p-7013444c.html\">run for governor<\/a>.
