{"id":5731,"date":"2005-11-03T12:22:28","date_gmt":"2005-11-03T17:22:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thecarpetbaggerreport.com\/?p=5731"},"modified":"2005-11-03T12:22:28","modified_gmt":"2005-11-03T17:22:28","slug":"scooter-and-long-ball-walton","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stevebenen.com\/thecarpetbaggerreport\/scooter-and-long-ball-walton\/","title":{"rendered":"Scooter and &#8216;Long Ball Walton&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Scooter Libby is back in the news, this time pleading <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2005\/POLITICS\/11\/03\/leak.probe\/index.html\">not guilty<\/a> to the five charges brought by Patrick Fitzgerald.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Vice President Dick Cheney&#8217;s former top adviser made his first court appearance Thursday, pleading not guilty to felony charges of lying to investigators and a grand jury in the probe into a leak of a CIA agent&#8217;s name.<\/p>\n<p>I. Lewis &#8220;Scooter&#8221; Libby appeared before U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton, who set the next court date for February 3 and released Libby on his own recognizance.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With respect your honor, I plead not guilty,&#8221; Libby said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This hardly comes as a surprise; Libby&#8217;s lawyers told reporters he&#8217;d plead not guilty. I&#8217;m curious, however, <a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/print?id=156238&#038;cacheKill=314175\">about the judge<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A Justice Department source said that Judge Walton is known by the nickname &#8220;Long Ball Walton&#8221; since he seems to like going for prison sentences that are as long as possible.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Unlike Tom DeLay, Scooter won&#8217;t be able to get around this judge &#8212; Walton was nominated in 2001 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dcd.uscourts.gov\/walton-bio.html\">by George W. Bush<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Also, Libby was booked after the hearing, but we won&#8217;t be getting a mugshot. The Marshals Service said it does not release booking photos unless the defendant becomes a fugitive.
