J.D. Hayworth (R-Ariz.) is a very conservative lawmaker from a reliably Republican district in a consistently &#8220;red&#8221; state. And after yesterday&#8217;s results, even Hayworth <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dccc.org\/stakeholder\/archives\/003860.html\">doesn&#8217;t want to be seen with Bush<\/a> in his home district.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>You may know J.D. Hayworth as the Arizona Republican <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dccc.org\/stakeholder\/archives\/001900.html\">caught up in Jack Abramoff&#8217;s mess<\/a>, as a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hillnews.com\/thehill\/export\/TheHill\/News\/Frontpage\/102705\/news3.html\">member of the ultra-conservative RSC<\/a> (&#8220;Wingnut Caucus&#8221;), or as the guy who tried to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/comment\/hayworth200402050958.asp\">spin David Kay&#8217;s testimony<\/a> as an exoneration of the Bush Administration. Now we can know him for this:<\/p>\n<p>IMUS: Would you just answer my question, would you like [President Bush] to come to Arizona and cut campaign commercials and run them on those TV stations everywhere? <\/p>\n<p>REP. HAYWORTH: In a word, no. At this time. <\/p>\n<p>IMUS: That&#8217;s being honest. J.D. Hayworth here on the &#8220;Imus in the morning&#8221; program.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>To appreciate the humor, you have to actually hear Hayworth say it. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shadowtv.com\/redirect\/notification.jsp?vid=ffb3091e445462acd761bea27f9c23a7\">Shadow TV has a clip<\/a>. Pay particular attention to the speed with which Hayworth dismisses the idea, as if one would have to be <em>crazy<\/em> to seek Bush&#8217;s support.<\/p>\n<p>I imagine this will be coming up more and more. A month ago Rep. Shelly Moore Capito (R-W. Va.) suggested she wouldn&#8217;t run for the Senate in part because <a href=\"http:\/\/seattletimes.nwsource.com\/html\/politics\/2002551137_gop10.html\">she couldn&#8217;t count on Bush<\/a> to be a campaign asset.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;In 2002, when I ran for my second term, the president came in and gave me a 5 [percentage] point bump up in the polls,&#8221; Capito said. &#8220;Whether he has the ability to bump someone up at this point is a valid question.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That was in early October; things have only gotten worse since.<\/p>\n<p>If Bush looks like a lame duck, and quacks like a lame duck&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rep.
