Bush&#8217;s presidency.&#8221; There was plenty to warrant the description &#8212; Scooter Libby was indicted, Harriet Miers&#8217; nomination came to a humiliating end, the war in Iraq produced its 2,000th U.S. casualty, the polls showed Bush&#8217;s support in freefall, and consumer confidence fell. It was, by any reasonable measure, an awful week for the president.<\/p>\n<p>Two weeks later, Bush purports to be on the comeback trail, in large part because, unless he&#8217;s impeached, he has nowhere to go but up. So, how&#8217;s this week gone for the beleaguered president? Let&#8217;s see&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>* The Republican House <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hillnews.com\/thehill\/export\/TheHill\/News\/Frontpage\/111005\/bill.html\">rejected<\/a> Bush-backed spending cuts.<\/p>\n<p>* The Republican majority of the Senate Finance Committee <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2005\/11\/10\/AR2005111001333.html\">rejected<\/a> Bush&#8217;s capital gains tax cuts.<\/p>\n<p>* The Republican House <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2005\/11\/09\/AR2005110902029.html\">rejected<\/a> Bush&#8217;s demands to drill the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.<\/p>\n<p>* A growing, bi-partisan consensus emerged to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.firstamendmentcenter.org\/news.aspx?id=16045\">ignore Bush<\/a> and curtail the Patriot Act.<\/p>\n<p>* The Republican Senate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecarpetbaggerreport.com\/archives\/5807.html\">rebuffed<\/a> the White House on torture and the Republican House is poised to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/washington\/2005-11-09-abuse-ban_x.htm\">do the same<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>* The chairman of the Senate Finance Committee said Bush&#8217;s call to make his first-term tax cuts permanent has practically <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2005\/11\/10\/AR2005111001333.html\">zero support<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>* Bush&#8217;s drive to privatize Social Security was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hillnews.com\/thehill\/export\/TheHill\/News\/Frontpage\/110905\/news2.html\">declared dead<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>* Bush&#8217;s trip to the Summit of the Americas <a href=\"http:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2005\/WORLD\/americas\/11\/05\/bush.summit.ap\/\">really didn&#8217;t go well<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>* And voters in a reliably &#8220;red&#8221; state rebuffed the president and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2005\/11\/08\/AR2005110800371.html\">elected a Democratic governor<\/a>, fairly easily.<\/p>\n<p>If this is Bush on the comeback trail, I can&#8217;t wait to see what the political landscape will look like when he hits another rough patch.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The last week in October was described far and wide as &#8220;the worst week of George W.
