{"id":5969,"date":"2005-12-01T13:39:44","date_gmt":"2005-12-01T18:39:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thecarpetbaggerreport.com\/?p=5969"},"modified":"2005-12-01T13:39:44","modified_gmt":"2005-12-01T18:39:44","slug":"porter-goss-torture-relativism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stevebenen.com\/thecarpetbaggerreport\/porter-goss-torture-relativism\/","title":{"rendered":"Porter Goss&#8217; torture relativism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>About a month ago, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.markarkleiman.com\/archives\/torture_\/2005\/11\/torture_uncertainty_and_moral_absolutes.php\">Mark Kleiman noted<\/a> how extraordinary it is that conservatives &#8220;reject moral relativism and insist on the black-and-white difference between good and evil&#8221; except &#8220;when it comes to torture.&#8221; It has to be equally extraordinary when the director of the CIA does it, too.<\/p>\n<p>Director Porter Goss sat down with Charlie Gibson on ABC&#8217;s Good Morning America this week and said, in all seriousness, that torture &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2005\/11\/29\/AR2005112900637.html\">is in the eye of the beholder<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Gibson: Let me ask you about torture. You said the other day, &#8220;The CIA does not do torture.&#8221; Correct? <\/p>\n<p>Goss: That is correct. <\/p>\n<p>Gibson: How do you define it? <\/p>\n<p>Goss: Well, I define torture probably the way most people would: in the eyes of the beholder. What we do does not come close because torture, in terms of inflicting pain or something like that, physical pain or causing a disability, those kinds of things that probably would be a common definition for most Americans, sort of, you know it when you see it, we don&#8217;t do that because it doesn&#8217;t get what you want.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Yeah, that ought to clear things up nicely.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\n<i>Post Script<\/i>: In the same interview, Goss, who told Time magazine earlier this year that he has an &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2005\/US\/06\/20\/goss.bin.laden\/\">excellent idea<\/a>&#8221; about Osama bin Laden&#8217;s whereabouts, responded to a question about the difficulty in tracking down the most sought after terrorist masterminds in the world.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Gibson: Just in the last 24 hours I asked a number of people, &#8220;How do you judge the agency?
