{"id":6245,"date":"2006-01-04T11:14:29","date_gmt":"2006-01-04T16:14:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thecarpetbaggerreport.com\/?p=6245"},"modified":"2006-01-04T11:14:29","modified_gmt":"2006-01-04T16:14:29","slug":"the-big-corrupt-picture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stevebenen.com\/thecarpetbaggerreport\/the-big-corrupt-picture\/","title":{"rendered":"The big, corrupt picture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The details about who Jack Abramoff will implicate in his web of corruption will be fleshed out in the coming weeks, but I thought it might be worthwhile to take a step back and look at what&#8217;s become of the Republican establishment.<\/p>\n<p>* GOP uber-lobbyist Jack Abramoff has pled guilty to fraud, tax evasion, and conspiracy to bribe public officials &#8212; and may ultimately implicate as many as <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB113629838156236463.html?mod=home_whats_news_us\">60 lawmakers<\/a>, in addition to <a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/print?id=1466916\">several Bush administration officials<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>* House Administration Committee Chairman Bob Ney (R-Ohio) has already been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecarpetbaggerreport.com\/archives\/5754.html\">implicated<\/a> in the Abramoff scandal and is in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/nationworld\/nation\/la-na-ney4jan04,1,6513692.story?coll=la-headlines-nation\">a world of trouble<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>* Tom DeLay, who is already facing money laundering charges in Texas, has reason to worry about what Abramoff <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2005\/12\/30\/AR2005123001480.html\">might<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chron.com\/disp\/story.mpl\/front\/3563736.html\">tell<\/a> prosecutors.<\/p>\n<p>* The Bush White House already lost one high-ranking aide due to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanprogress.org\/site\/pp.asp?c=biJRJ8OVF&#038;b=109719\">a criminal indictment<\/a>, and is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecarpetbaggerreport.com\/archives\/5928.html\">still under a criminal investigation<\/a> now. (Fitzgerald&#8217;s grand jury met this morning, by the way.)<\/p>\n<p>* The Bush administration is also facing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.realcities.com\/mld\/krwashington\/news\/nation\/13451356.htm\">an investigation<\/a> into whether it circumvented the law by engaging in warrantless searches.<\/p>\n<p>* Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist is under investigation by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2005\/09\/23\/AR2005092301811.html\">SEC and the Justice Department<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A few months back, for the first time in American history, we had a White House, Senate leader, and House leader all under criminal investigations at the same time. And that&#8217;s without even getting into &#8220;Duke&#8221; Cunningham&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2005\/11\/28\/AR2005112801827.html\">almost cartoonish corruption<\/a> or the bevy of scandals among several <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2005\/08\/17\/AR2005081701209.html\">Republican<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecarpetbaggerreport.com\/archives\/5111.html\">governors<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Culture of corruption&#8221;?
