The other<\/a> major national poll released yesterday afternoon came by way of the Pew Research Center. The NBC\/WSJ numbers<\/a> were bad, but the Pew numbers are worse<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In the aftermath of the Dubai ports deal, President Bush’s approval rating has hit a new low and his image for honesty and effectiveness has been damaged.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

How bad? Pew pegged Bush’s approval rating at a stunning 33%, which is the lowest level of support the president has received in any national poll to date.<\/p>\n

The poll shows all of the relevant numbers political observers expect (Bush’s handling of Iraq, terrorism, the economy, etc.), but what I like about the Pew report is that it also gauges support for the president’s personal and professional qualities.<\/p>\n

* “Strong leader<\/i>“: The image of Bush as a strong leader that Karl Rove has worked tirelessly to promote has been severely damaged. In July 2005, 55% of Americans said they saw the president as a strong leader. Now, it’s 44%.<\/p>\n

* “Able to get things done<\/i>“: This, too, has dropped to 43%, which is the worst of Bush’s presidency.<\/p>\n

* “Cares about people<\/i>“: Bush has never scored particularly well on this question, but now he’s down to just 42%.<\/p>\n

* “Trustworthy<\/i>“: Down to just 40%.<\/p>\n

* “Well-informed<\/i>“: Further highlighting questions about the president’s competency, only 38% of the public described Bush as well-informed.<\/p>\n

* “Good manager<\/i>“: A new question for the Pew survey, only 35% of poll respondents said they see Bush as a good manager. So much for the CEO president.<\/p>\n

But the most compelling part of the Pew survey was when Americans were asked to describe the president in a single word. Respondents volunteered answers, and were not offered words to choose from. They had some interesting responses.<\/p>\n

A year ago, the top three responses were “honest,” “good,” and “integrity,” in that order. Now, the top three are “incompetent,” “good,” and “idiot.” (A close fourth was “liar.”)<\/p>\n

For a while, I’ve seen and heard Bush critics asking, “When is the public going to realize how awful the president is?” I think it’s fair to say, we’ve reached that point.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
