Time magazine released its latest national poll<\/a> the other day, which showed Dems with a pretty healthy lead over the GOP in a generic congressional ballot, 50% to 41%. But as Shaun at Upper Left noted<\/a>, there were some more interesting numbers if you dig through the internals a bit.<\/p>\n

Which party would do a better job of …<\/p>\n

… rebuilding New Orleans and the Gulf Coast? Democrats 48%, Republicans 21%<\/p>\n

… standing up to special interests? Democrats 40%, Republicans 22%<\/p>\n

… managing government spending? Democrats 46%, Republicans 31%<\/p>\n

… dealing with corruption in government? Democrats 39%, Republicans 25%<\/p>\n

… protecting the rights of Americans? Democrats 48%, Republicans 35%<\/p>\n

… managing tax policies? Democrats 45%, Republicans 38%<\/p>\n

… dealing with the war in Iraq? Democrats 40%, Republicans 41%<\/p>\n

… dealing with terrorism? Democrats 33%, Republicans 44%<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The two that jump out at me are the ones on “managing government spending” and “managing tax policies.”<\/p>\n

Late last week, the president decided he’d roll out<\/a> the ol’ tax-and-spend attack, telling an audience in Indiana, “The difference is clear: if you want the government in your pocket, vote Democrat; if you want to keep more of your hard-earned money, vote Republican.” And yet, this poll shows when it comes to taxing and spending, the public — by a fairly wide margin — prefers the Dems’ approach to the GOP’s.<\/p>\n

I wonder when was the last time so many more Americans trusted the Dems on taxes and spending. It was probably the last time Dems had a congressional majority.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
