{"id":7181,"date":"2006-04-19T11:13:23","date_gmt":"2006-04-19T15:13:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thecarpetbaggerreport.com\/?p=7181"},"modified":"2006-04-19T11:13:23","modified_gmt":"2006-04-19T15:13:23","slug":"if-bush-were-serious-about-science-being-cool","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stevebenen.com\/thecarpetbaggerreport\/if-bush-were-serious-about-science-being-cool\/","title":{"rendered":"If Bush were serious about science being &#8216;cool&#8217;&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/news\/releases\/2006\/04\/20060418-4.html\">[tag]Bush[\/tag] spoke<\/a> at a magnet middle school in Maryland to talk up his &#8220;[tag]American Competitiveness Initiative[\/tag],&#8221; and he emphasized how important it is for students to think of [tag]science[\/tag] as being &#8220;[tag]cool[\/tag].&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;We saw two [tag]scientists[\/tag] who are here from NASA. These are good, hard-working folks who said, &#8216;I kind of want to lend my expertise to try to convince a child that science is cool.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You know, sometimes &#8212; you might remember those days, when you were in middle school, people say, you know, science isn&#8217;t cool. Science is not only cool, it&#8217;s really important for the future of this country, and it&#8217;s great to have people we call adjunct professors here, to help lend their real-life experiences to stimulate junior high students to the wonders of science.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I agree with this message; I just wish the messenger knew what he was talking about.<\/p>\n<p>If the president were serious about showing young people how great science is, how about leading by example? Bush could, for example, stop his administration from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecarpetbaggerreport.com\/archives\/6474.html\">muzzling scientists at NASA<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonmonthly.com\/archives\/individual\/2006_03\/008515.php\">ignoring scientists at the EPA<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecarpetbaggerreport.com\/archives\/7072.html\">punishing scientists<\/a> who stray from the party line at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the U.S. Geological Survey.<\/p>\n<p>For that matter, if Bush <i>really<\/i> wanted to show kids how great science is, he could reverse course on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.realcities.com\/mld\/krwashington\/news\/nation\/12278497.htm\">teaching intelligent-design creationism<\/a> in public school science classes, rejecting all scientific evidence as it relates to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2006\/01\/28\/AR2006012801021.html\">global warming<\/a>, dismissing and restricting the scientific breakthroughs promised by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/id\/2090527\/\">stem-cell research<\/a>, and generally give up on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ucsusa.org\/news\/press_release.cfm?newsID=381\">using bogus science<\/a> to justify his political agenda.<\/p>\n<p><i>That<\/i> would be cool.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday, [tag]Bush[\/tag] spoke at a magnet middle school in Maryland to talk up his &#8220;[tag]American Competitiveness Initiative[\/tag],&#8221; and he emphasized how important it is for students to think of [tag]science[\/tag] as being &#8220;[tag]cool[\/tag].&#8221; &#8220;We saw two [tag]scientists[\/tag] who are here from NASA.
