The Bush White House insisted she had to be on the job immediately, and the Senate wasn&#8217;t acting fast enough.<\/p>\n<p>[tag]Henke[\/tag], before getting the DHS job, was best known for some &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecarpetbaggerreport.com\/archives\/5050.html\">creative editing<\/a>&#8221; to Justice Departments reports in order to remove information about racial-profiling data, and for then forcing an experienced and capable public official who disagreed out of a job.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, Henke became infamous again. As Garance Franke-Ruta <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prospect.org\/weblog\/2006\/06\/post_504.html#002608\">noted<\/a>, Henke was the genius who decided to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2006\/06\/01\/washington\/01security.html?ex=1306814400&#038;en=131686e5ca25cfcf&#038;ei=5090&#038;partner=rssuserland&#038;emc=rss\">de-fund<\/a> anti-terrorism efforts in [tag]New York[\/tag] and [tag]Washington[\/tag].<\/p>\n<p>We knew that <i>someone<\/i> at [tag]DHS[\/tag] decided that [tag]DC[\/tag] is a &#8220;[tag]low-risk[\/tag]&#8221; city and that the [tag]Statue of Liberty[\/tag], [tag]Brooklyn Bridge[\/tag], and [tag]Empire State Building[\/tag] are not worthy of &#8220;national icon&#8221; status &#8212; and that person was our old friend Tracy Henke.<\/p>\n<p>And, as Dana [tag]Milbank[\/tag] <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2006\/06\/01\/AR2006060101722.html\">explained<\/a>, Henke, as the official in charge of DHS&#8217;s grant-making, also decided to cut counterterrorism money for NYC and the Washington area &#8212; &#8220;which together have been the targets of 100 percent of [tag]al-Qaeda[\/tag]&#8217;s terrorist attacks on American soil&#8221; &#8212; by 40% each.<\/p>\n<p>Now, apparently, she&#8217;s feeling sorry for herself.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Needless to say, not everybody has nice things to say about me,&#8221; she said, so &#8220;anybody who wants to say something nice, please feel free to do so. You know, it&#8217;s one of those things where it&#8217;s occasionally important to have a little bit of that positive affirmation. If nothing else, then I&#8217;ll have to call my parents, and the reality is they don&#8217;t give it to me either.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Let this be a reminder to everyone that Bush&#8217;s fondness for promoting [tag]hacks[\/tag] and [tag]cronies[\/tag] to key government posts is not just an inconvenient quirk of governing.
