How did supporters manage to regress after gaining allies in [tag]Congress[\/tag]? I suspect exchanges like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2006\/06\/06\/AR2006060601280.html\">this one<\/a> from a press conference on the Hill help explain part of the problem.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>[Sen. Wayne Allard (R-Colo.)] held a news conference Monday at which the speakers said they wanted to reduce the &#8220;epidemic level of fatherlessness in America.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;How would outlawing gay marriage encourage heterosexual fathers to stick around?&#8221; was the first question. Allard skirted the question by saying that &#8220;laws send a message to our [tag]children[\/tag].&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The moderator, Matt Daniels of the Alliance for Marriage, tried to find a question on another subject. But when reporters continued to press Allard on the link between same-sex marriage and deadbeat dads, Daniels blurted out: &#8220;All right, you know what? We&#8217;re going to call this press conference to a close.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Rhetorically, at least, supporters of the [tag]amendment[\/tag] spent an almost-ridiculous amount of time arguing that gay marriage would lead to children without parents. [tag]Focus on the Family[\/tag] <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2006\/06\/06\/washington\/06bush.html?ex=1307246400&#038;en=7c10a50344230257&#038;ei=5090&#038;partner=rssuserland&#038;emc=rss\">ran<\/a> a series of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.family.org\/cforum\/extras\/a0040678.cfm\">print ads<\/a> across the country asking, &#8220;Why doesn&#8217;t Senator [fill in the blank] believe every child needs a [tag]mother[\/tag] and a [tag]father[\/tag]?&#8221; The ads explained:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;It is a painful but very real truth. Homosexual marriages intentionally create motherless families or fatherless families. But a compassionate society would not deliberately deny a child a mother or father.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s always a mistake to look for logic in far-right claims, but aren&#8217;t these arguments geared towards opposition to [tag]gay[\/tag] [tag]adoption[\/tag]?
