Mark Foley (R-Fla.), whose creepy emails to a 16-year-old page sparked an unseemly controversy, has <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.abcnews.com\/theblotter\/2006\/09\/foley_resigns_o.html\">resigned from the House<\/a> and will not seek re-election.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Congressman Mark Foley (R-FL) planned to resign today, hours after ABC questioned him about sexually explicit internet messages with current and former Congressional pages under the age of 18.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesman for Foley, the chairman of the House Caucus on Missing and Exploited Children, said the congressman submitted his resignation in a letter late this afternoon to Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Apparently, the vaguely suggestive emails weren&#8217;t the only problem. ABC News obtained excerpts of instant messages provided by former pages who said Foley, &#8220;under the AOL Instant Messenger screen name Maf54, made repeated references to sexual organs and acts.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On a personal level, this is a very sad story, about a teenaged kid who shouldn&#8217;t have had to deal with these unwanted sexual advances, and about a lawmaker who clearly has a serious problem.<\/p>\n<p>On a political level, the election is in 40 days, well past the filing deadline in Florida. The <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/s\/ap\/20060929\/ap_on_go_co\/congressman_e_mails;_ylt=Ai1NL8xXLmZClLME2V8D0pus0NUE;_ylu=X3oDMTA3OTB1amhuBHNlYwNtdHM-\">AP is reporting<\/a> that the state party can still pick Foley&#8217;s replacement for the ballot.<\/p>\n<p>And on a painful level, <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/2006\/09\/29\/foley-reelection\/\">TP adds<\/a> that Foley is the founder and co-chair of the Congressional Missing and Exploited Children\u2019s Caucus.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rep.
