Sam Brownback<\/a> (R-Kansas). This surprises&#8230;absolutely no one.<\/p>\n<p>* Military prosecutors have told the Pentagon&#8217;s Criminal Investigation Task Force &#8220;not to worry about making a criminal case against alleged 9\/11 accomplice Mohammed al-Qahtani} because what had been done to him would prevent him from ever being put on trial.&#8221; In other words, the Bush administration may have made it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.msn.com\/id\/15361462\/\">impossible to prosecute<\/a> the man who may be the 20th hijacker.<\/p>\n<p>* On Monday, Rep. Barbara Cubin (R-Wyo.), after a contentious debate, <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/s\/ap\/20061024\/ap_on_el_ge\/wyoming_house_threat;_ylt=AoLpHPRIc0nqdQ7LsGkRF8TMWM0F;_ylu=X3oDMTA3OXIzMDMzBHNlYwM3MDM-\">threatened<\/a> a rival whose multiple sclerosis keeps him confined to a wheelchair. Yesterday, Cubin <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/washington\/2006-10-24-apology-cubin_x.htm\">said<\/a>, &#8220;In retrospect I was wrong in what I said and I apologize.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>* The British military wants to withdraw troops from Iraq <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2006\/10\/25\/world\/middleeast\/25troops.html\">within a year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>* The American people want to withdraw troops from Iraq <a href=\"http:\/\/www.editorandpublisher.com\/eandp\/news\/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003314458\">within a year<\/a>, too.<\/p>\n<p>* As much as 55% of the budget of some reconstruction projects in Iraq <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2006\/10\/25\/world\/middleeast\/25reconstruct.html?ex=1319428800&#038;en=9d861406d521b3f3&#038;ei=5090&#038;partner=rssuserland&#038;emc=rss\">goes to overhead<\/a>. <i>55%<\/i>? A government estimate released yesterday explained that, in some cases, more money was being spent &#8220;on housing and feeding employees, completing paperwork and providing security than on actual construction.&#8221; The highest proportion of overhead was incurred in oil-facility contracts won by &#8230; wait for it &#8230; Halliburton.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\n* <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crooksandliars.com\/2006\/10\/25\/wesley-clark-and-billy-o\/\">Wesley Clark 1<\/a>, Bill O&#8217;Reilly 0.<\/p>\n<p>* The CIA&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.upi.com\/inc\/view.php?StoryID=20061023-044550-3387r\">personnel problems<\/a> seem to be more than a little serious, particularly now.<\/p>\n<p>* What is it with congressional Republicans and their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehill.com\/thehill\/export\/TheHill\/News\/Frontpage\/102506\/taylor.html\">shady land deals<\/a>? (thanks to K.Z. for the tip)<\/p>\n<p>* How big a political problem is the war in Iraq for GOP congressional candidates? Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R) is urging Republican hopefuls <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/s\/ap\/20061025\/ap_on_go_co\/republicans_iraq_1\">not to talk about the issue<\/a> on the campaign trail at all. Wow.<\/p>\n<p>* Media Matters <a href=\"http:\/\/mediamatters.org\/items\/200610200015\">asks<\/a>, &#8220;RNC Ad Received Free Airtime; Will DNC Get the Same Treatment?&#8221; I have a hunch we know the answer to that one.<\/p>\n<p>* GOP slogan of the day from conservative \u00fcber-activist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2006\/10\/24\/AR2006102401563_2.html\">Paul Weyrich<\/a>: &#8220;I suppose we&#8217;ll have to vote the jerks back in and see what we can do.&#8221; As Michael Crowley <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tnr.com\/blog\/theplank?pid=51733\">asked<\/a>, &#8220;Why can&#8217;t the Democrats come up with winning soundbites like that?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>* To respond to the actor who played Alex P.
