Since when does John McCain consider John Lewis an advisor?
On Saturday night, at the forum at Saddleback Church, the Rev. Rick Warren asked John McCain to name “the three wisest people that you know that you would rely on heavily in an administration.” McCain listed three people: Gen. David Petraeus, Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), and eBay CEO Meg Whitman.
It was nice, I suppose, for McCain to mention Lewis in this context. Indeed, I don’t doubt for a moment that Lewis is quite wise and would have a lot to offer McCain in the way of advice.
But it was more than a little odd to see McCain tout his support for Lewis’ wisdom given that McCain has largely ignored Lewis during their decades of concurrent congressional service. Jonathan Stein has the story:
At the time of McCain’s Selma speech
, a Lewis associate told my colleague David Corn that McCain has never been close to Lewis. Lewis was not told about McCain’s speech in Selma in advance, nor was he invited to attend.
In response to McCain’s latest invocation of his name, Rep. Lewis said in a statement requested by Mother Jones, “I cannot stop one human being, even a presidential candidate, from admiring the courage and sacrifice of peaceful protesters on the Edmund Pettus Bridge or making comments about it.” But, he added, “Sen. McCain and I are colleagues in the US Congress, not confidantes. He does not consult me. And I do not consult him.”
Well, no, of course not. McCain is a conservative Republican with an underwhelming record on civil rights. Lewis is a progressive Democrat who has championed civil rights throughout his life.
McCain is going to “rely … heavily” on Lewis if elected president next year? We should be so lucky.

says:Gen. David Petraeus, John Lewis, and eBay’s Meg Whitman?
Great! A General turned celebrity with Booooosh administration sock puppet status, a guy who has nothing to do with McLame and somebody else who heads online auctions.. Who can you trust with your love these days?! John McSurge!
jhm
says:I suppose we should consider ourselves lucky that he didn’t list Jesus.
Grumpy
says:jhm… That was the answer Rick Warren was fishing for, obviously.
Is it possible McCain was referring to some guy named Jon Louis?
MsMuddled
says:FWIW: Meg is no longer the president of eBay. Trivial, but a matter of fact. What is it about McCain and former female CEO’s?

says:We are all, quite rightly I think, making a joke out of this but not actually stepping in ‘it’.
One way to view this is as meaningless drivel. Another way is to just note that he’s full of it.
And yes jhm, based on the current president’s frequent invocations of divine perspiration, we probably are lucky.
Maria
says:“Senator, by mentioning a black guy and a white woman, you can grab large chunks of the minority and female vote! They eat that stuff up!”
Yes, his campaign really is this stupid and clueless.

I hear McCain may have also tagged “Chad” to be one of his advisers next year should he win. It is the word on the street, anyway.
Basilisc
says:Lewis … crosses in the sand … the cone of silence … flipflops on key issues … hiring lobbyists …
I assume very shortly we’ll read stories in the media, á la Gore 2000, about McCain’s serious credibility issues.
Waiting …
Still waiting ….
Wait, you mean Democratic operatives aren’t spoon-feeding these stories to them?
Oh, never mind then.

says:May I just say how proud I am of my Congressman?
Lance
says:I think it’s pretty clear that John Sidney lied to Rev. Rick Warren…
… again.
Why JSMcC*nt can’t be honest I don’t get. He’s going to lose anyway, why not do it with honor.

says:Now that we know that the candidate’s had this question in advance, it explains how John McCain came up with this ecclectic mix.
Not a good mix, but a concise mix..
So the media swoons.
Why is the bar set so low for John McCain?
Prup (aka Jim Benton)
says:Basilisc:
(and others, many others) If you haven’t noticed, most of the anti-McCain stories we break here COME FROM the National Media, that even Larry King pointed out how big a mistake McCain was making in stressing ‘anti-abortion’ when 60% are pro-choice, that the cheating at Saddleback was broken by Andrea Mitchell, and that the attack on NBC will make things worse. That poll a week or so that had 78% of negative comments about Obama ALSO had 54% negative comments on McCain — and much more serious ones.
No, they don’t — and shouldn’t — sound like Steve Benen. But the other networks and newspapers don’t sound like FauxSnooze either.

says:Lance:
McCain can’t lose with honor any more than he could win with honor. You can’t be ‘with’ something you’ve never had.
Basilisc
says:Prup, You’re right that the raw material is in the MSM. But not many (except Rich, Krugman, & the other outsiders) are connecting the dots just yet. What I’m waiting for are the “framing” kinds of pieces, the utterances by the Broders and the rest of the Conventional Wisdom Watch, maybe even (the ultimate sign that something’s hit mainstream opinion) coverage by a Leno monologue. I admit I don’t read enough of those things to tell if they’re picking them up – they bore me to tears – but if they have take this stance I stand corrected.
Basilisc
says:should read “taken this stance”
Maria
says:Basilic, you’re correct; they certainly haven’t connected the dots, and therein lies the problem. When the MSM reports on the low-road nature of the McCain campaign and continually speculates that maybe he’s not really aware that his staffers are running such an effort (!)–and that’s just one example of the MSM’s shocking refusal to confront any implications attendant upon the facts they do report–many of us are not hopeful that the message of McCain’s fundamental lack of integrity and honesty will ever get through to low-information voters.

says:MsMuddled,
Fiorina was awful at HP. She was forced out to save the company. Whitman was okay at ebay, but honestly, it was Omidyar’s idea that made ebay, not Whitman’s managment. In fact, Whitman bailed after making a few mistakes, angering the retailer base, and opening the door to competition.
Whiman’s best ideas were when to join ebay and when to leave.

You know, I totally disagree with that. No matter how debased a life you have led, and JSMcC*nt’s has been pretty miserable, you can always try to act honorably in your next great task.
Running for President is JSMcC*nt’s next great task. Somehow he is approaching it no better than his effort to return to his first marriage after captivity.
Repugnants
says:John Mccane cheated at saddleback. He knew the questions beforehand.
If you read the transcripts of the event Mccane talks about the supreme court justices BEFORE he is even asked about it. This slip up proves that he cheated
(Transcript shows Warren TOLD McCain, DURING the event, that McCain knew ALL the questions!)
Read the transcript:
McCain: Are we going to get back to the importance of Supreme Court justices, or should I mention it? (THIS IS THE LINE THAT PROVES IT. GET BACK TO JUSTICES? If you review the previous questions the justices weren’t even brought up yet.)
REV. WARREN: We will get to that.
SEN. MCCAIN: Okay. All right. (Laughter.) Okay.
REV. WARREN: Man, you’re jumping ahead. You know all my questions.”
JW
says:McCain reminds me of George Castanza, in that episode of Seinfeld where George desperately seeks a black person that he can introduce as his friend, in order to prove to his black boss (whom he’s offended) that he’s not racist, just insensitive.
Paul Camp
says:I imagine he can rely on Lewis to be black. Is there really anything else he needs from the man?
