Was is it me or did Bill Safire look awful yesterday on Meet the Press? I’m certainly not a regular fan of his work, but yesterday, the guy came across as barely coherent. He spoke interminably about his own use of the word “energize,” he appeared to have trouble remembering President Bush’s name, and he continues to believe there’s a giant secret plot centered around Hillary Clinton in the Dem primaries.
Perhaps best (or worst) of all, Safire offered the audience this partisan gem:
“I’m a right-winger. I’d like to see another McGovern because I envision a Dean candidacy that not only reaffirms a second term for George W. Bush but drags down Democrats all across the country.”
Huh? I know Safire is a Republican, but isn’t there something a little bizarre about having an alleged journalist from the nation’s most prestigious newspaper appearing on national television effectively endorsing Bush and wishing for the defeat of Democrats nationwide?
Our liberal media at work. Try as I might, I can’t think of a single left-leaning journalist who appears regularly on the Sunday morning shows who could get away with saying something like, “I’m a left-winger, Bush is like Barry Goldwater, and I’m glad because I want Republicans to lose from coast to coast.”
Imagine the outcry, the demands for a resignation, and the threats of an organized boycott. And yet, will Safire suffer any negative consequences from this? I seriously doubt it.
