Kerry: McCain approached me about joining Dem ticket

Last week, The Hill caused quite a stir when it reported that [tag]John McCain[/tag], in 2001, was close to switching parties, and members of his team had actually initiated discussions about the Arizona senator becoming a Dem. Several leading conservative blogs noted that, if true, the report would likely end McCain’s chances in the Republican presidential primary.

There’s hasn’t been too much follow-up since — McCain was in the Middle East over the weekend — but MyDD’s Jonathan Singer chatted with John Kerry yesterday and learned a similarly fascinating and related tidbit of news.

Singer: There’s a story in The Hill, I think on Tuesday, by Bob Cusack on the front page of the paper talking about how John McCain’s people — John Weaver — had approached Tom Daschle and a New York Congressman, I don’t remember his name, about switching parties. And I was wondering if you could talk a little bit about what your discussions were with him in 2004, how far it went, who approached whom… if there was any “there” there.

Kerry: I don’t know all the details of it. I know that Tom, from a conversation with him, was in conversation with a number of Republicans back then. It doesn’t surprise me completely because his people similarly approached me to engage in a discussion about his potentially being on the ticket as Vice President. So his people were active — let’s put it that way.

Singer: Okay. And just to confirm, you said it, but this is something they approached you rather than…

Kerry: Absolutely correct. John Weaver of his shop… [JK answers phone]

Now, we all heard plenty of talk in 2004 about McCain being considered for Kerry’s running mate. Indeed, McCain acknowledged on national television that he’d consider the offer, should Kerry extend it.

But this detail from Kerry is definitely new. All the reports indicated that it was Kerry’s team who reached out to McCain. Kerry is now saying that it was the other way around.

If the right didn’t like reports that McCain considered jumping ship six years ago, they’re really not going to like this.

It’s already started. Human Events’ blog noted:

This story has lasted for more than a couple days- And if this report is false, then the McCain should set the record straight quickly.

And regardless of if this story is false or true, the bigger problem for McCain is that this story is entirely believable.

Dean Barnett adds:

This really isn’t shaping up as John McCain’s week. First, he got skunked in the money primary, and now his old friend John Kerry is hitting the internets reminding everyone about McCain’s alleged perfidy during the 2004 election…. The McCain campaign presumably has the agita.

Singer notes in his scoop, “For Republicans, I would imagine that reports that he approached the Democrats about leaving the Senate GOP caucus in 2001 represent a borderline unpardonable offense. But it seems that reaching out to the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee to talk about running on that party’s ticket would be tantamount to the highest form of political treason to Republicans.”

I’m very much inclined to agree. Can you imagine the ads?

“…John McCain says he’s a conservative, but in the last election, while our troops were on the battlefield, he reached out to Massachusetts liberal John Kerry about running against President Bush. This, after he tried to join the Democrat Party. How can we trust John McCain?”

Let’s see just how rapid the McCain campaign’s rapid-response team really is.

Stick a fork in him. He’s done.

  • The panderer is slowly losing his “maverick” label, thank goodness… although I respect his service to our country (he was bayoneted in the CROTCH for America, after all) he is a shamless hack that needs to get his 72 year old ass in a nursing home, rather than the Oval Office.

  • Sad to see him go from American hero to political whore. I think Kerry/McCain 2004 would have been a huge winner!

  • At first glance I think I am really glad that McLamebrain didn’t go through with it, because even though it would have gotten rid of Bush, unless president Kerry locked him in a closet he would be a constant source of embarrassment for the Democrats (the Republicans would disown him the instant it came out). He would be OUR lamebrain, not theirs. And IMO with that dynamic 2006 would not have given us a real congress back.

On the other hand, getting rid of Bush would be worth almost any price.

  • The thing is, I saw a newspaper story with McCain back in spring 2004 where he said Kerry personally approached him many, many times about joining the ticket. McCain talked like Kerry was following him around the Senate floor, begging him.

(BTW, you guys have got to fix this problem with WordPress regarding comments.)

  • I don’t think Kerry/Magoo would have been such a winner. Obviously, Kerry knows him better than any of us here in the cheap seats. And he’s coming out now to bury St. John for good. I take that as a character reference.

And the GOP I’m sure knows a skeleton or two in McCain’s closet. Just think of the vitriol they would have thrown at him.

  • This isn’t totally new. There has been speculation in the past that the story came from McCain and not Kerry. McCain has also floated stories that he was Bush’s choice. I think this is primarily all about McCain trying to improve his own reputation making it appear everyone wanted him to run with them.

I have more on this at Liberal Values:

  • the bigger problem for McCain is that this story is entirely believable.

Unlike anything that comes from the mouth of Sen. Truch Bach Lake Express.

I hope the fact that McHamster once tried to prostitute himself to the Dems doesn’t reflect poorly on the party as a whole. You know, like when the weird bug-eating kid who always has boogies in his nose likes you. Cooties by association.

  • Paybacks are a bitch!

Does anybody remember McCain “limp” defense of Kerry when the swiftboaters attacked Kerry in August of 2004?

  • What has Bush done since the 2004 election to make Republicans think his winning, and Kerry’s losing, was a good thing?

    Nothing comes to mind.

  • It’s a real shame this came out now. Imagine if all these faults of his would be dragged into the light a year from now.

  • I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. McCain using the “wasted” troops phrase mere weeks after Obama did, and then Obama defending him, constituted political courtship of the highest order.

    McCain-Obama 08?

  • Wow … what a creep Kerry is. He had approached McCain as a running mate … McCain defended Kerry when he was being unfairly attacked … Kerry demeans McCain’s judgement, when it was McCain who came up with the surge, which worked! And, Kerry is choosing Obama, who has no experience, voted present 100 times in the senate, and never voted on the committee he chaired, and spent 20 years in Jeremiah Wright’s anti-American, racist church. And, Kerry is saying McCain has poor judgement???
Thank God Kerry wasn’t elected President … and, God help us if Obama is elected President.
