Anti-Clinton books are on the way

As if there haven’t been enough anti-Clinton books, we have two more on the way.

Two new books on Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York offer fresh and often critical portraits of the Democratic presidential candidate that depict a tortured relationship with her husband and her past and challenge the image she has presented on the campaign trail.

The Hillary Clinton who emerges from the pages of the books comes across as a complicated, sometimes compromised figure who tolerated Bill Clinton’s brazen infidelity, pursued her policy and political goals with methodical drive, and occasionally skirted along the edge of the truth along the way. The books portray her as alternately brilliant and controlling, ambitious and victimized.

Given the initial reports, there’s a qualitative difference between the two new books, though neither one appear to be on track to win a Pulitzer.

“Her Way: The Hopes and Ambitions of Hillary Rodham Clinton,” by Jeff Gerth and Don Van Natta Jr., is clearly the hit job of the two. For example, it quotes Taylor Branch, the Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and close Clinton friend, explaining that the Clintons “planned two terms in the White House for Bill and, later, two for Hillary.”

Contacted last night by the WaPo, Branch said that “the story is preposterous” and that “I never heard either Clinton talk about a ‘plan’ for them both to become president.”

When one of the central premises of a book is based on a false quote, it’s not a good sign. Given Gerth’s background, we probably shouldn’t be surprised.

Carl Bernstein’s “A Woman in Charge: The Life of Hillary Rodham Clinton” reportedly isn’t as sloppy as “Her Way,” but is nevertheless overly fascinated by — you guessed it — the Clintons’ personal lives.

The Clinton camp hopes to brush off the books as mainly rehashing old news. “Is it possible to be quoted yawning?” asked Philippe Reines, her Senate spokesman. If past books on Clinton were “cash for trash,” he added, “these books are nothing more than cash for rehash.”

Howard Wolfson, a campaign spokesman, pointed to previous reports on some of the elements in the books to make the point that there was nothing new. “The news here is that it took three reporters nearly a decade to find no news,” he said.

I keep thinking, “Haven’t we seen all of this before?” I don’t doubt that the books will get plenty of publicity, but it all seems rather pointless. National Journal’s Marc Ambinder said, “It’s hard to imagine we’ll be talking about these books in August,” adding:

Ooh — HRC is ambitious. And ruthless. Ambitious people can be ruthless.

Ooh — HRC fought to keep her family’s private life private.

Ooh — Bill Clinton had extramarital affairs.

Ooh — the Clintons were worried about Whitewater.

Riveting.

The only question I have is this: will these books end up on the overstock/remainder table in July or August?

I doubt many people listen to Rush.

Yeah, that is why I post comments that are only 99% anti-Bush and only 95% liberal, Flame away

Anyway, someone drove me to lunch today and I heard about 3 minutes of Rush. He said that these books were timed to get them out of the way now.

See, even books that go against the Clintons are part of the Clintons’ plan to take over the world.

  • “The only question I have is this: will these books end up on the overstock/remainder table in July or August? ”

Don’t forget all those American Enterprise/CPAC/Klan rallies where they hand out garbagte like this as door prizes.

And what, no Ann Coulter book yet? I, for one, am disappointed.

  • I see this as just so much white noise to distract from Hils’ real problems. If they were as hard hitting then they should have focused on her campaign team. You know, Her “Karl” and the ex lobbyists for Coal and Big Pharma/Healthcare, the same ones who “love” Hils’ new energy and “heathcare” plan.

Who cares about who Bill screwed? Or their sex life (or lack of it) Or their marital problems. Or Whitewater.

Hils is the anointed one loved by the big interests and nothing will stop the Triangulator.

  • Where are liberals’ books about some of the GOP people? We need a tell-all about Ann Coulter, Rush, John McCain, Rudy Guiliani… It isn’t hard. These “authors” get all their info from printed media. They certainly don’t interview the subjects!!! All the better to make stuff up!!! Maybe if we hit back, they would quit. We need some Swiftboat groups of our own…

I know, I hate to stoop to their level, but they are never going to stop the politics of political assassination and we can’t depend on the MSM to call them on their B.S.

  • As a native New Yorker, I’m a strong Hillary R. Clinton as a long-term senator from New York supporter. I’m highly impressed, as a constituent of hers, in her conscientious and personally responsive way she responds promptly to my many issue-oriented e-mails to her. She has made an excellent champion of her constituents as New York’s junior senator.

You are wrong about us Swiftboating the Rupublicans. If we stoop to their tactics we will be no better than them. What we need is more material like Al Franken’s books. “Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot” was a great book. Franken pointed out how far out their positions and actions made them then laughed at them. If you want to destroy them convince moderates and independents that the Repub’s are something to be ridiculed.

I particularly enjoyed Franken’s graphing of Limbaugh’s weight gain to his popularity. As the weight went up so did his popularity. When it dropped so did he.

I hate what they’ve done to my country, but using their tactics work, it will only put us on the same level as them.

P.S. I also think tar and feathers for most of them would be hilarious.

  • I don’t get it. Why shouldn’t the Clintons have planned to both be president? They are two qualified individuals, not one person. This may be the first time such a thing has been likely, but I am guessing it will not be the last. Is it worse or better than a family planning to have a father and possibly multiple sons be president? Seems we didn’t have trouble with that one conceptually.

  • I’m with Jesseaw #6. I’m not ready to bash Hillary when she is quantumly better than any Republican out there. She did vote against the funding bill.

When I think about how dishonest and despicable McCain and Romney and their guys are, Hillary looks pretty good.

I’ve never bought into that “lower yourself to their level” idea. If someone hits you with a low blow, kicking them in the nuts is not reducing yourself. It’s delivering justice. The good guys never shoot first, but they do shoot.

What would be good titles for Coulter-like books about the right? Hypocrites. I liked the phrase one commenter used recently Whiney Titty Babies. 🙂

  • I really don’t give a hoot what any radical republican wack jobs have to say about Hillary Clinton. Her record speaks for it self. She is about as corrupt as they come. She is a censorship advocate, she accepts droves of money like the rest of the corrupted. She’s changing her tune on the Iraq war. She voted for the war and now she wants to play the anti-war advocate.

I would vote for a republican before this lady. It’s got nothing to do with her husband, which I might add was also corrupt. I consider myself to be extremely far left on the political spectrum. The fact that Hillary is a supposed Democrat means nothing to me. She is simply a corrupt politician.

I voted for Democrats across the board in this last election to affect change concerning the Iraq war. And yet again the Democrats prove to be no less corrupt then their political counterparts. They’ve given Bush a free hand to do whatever he wants. I’m fed up. I will vote for the Green party or not vote at all. This two-party monopoly is hurting this country, they are in effect one in the same. The only difference is what corporate “donators” will gain the inside track. Corporatocracy is our government type, it’s not a republic or a democracy, it never has been!

  • The American people can do much better than Hillary Clinton and her husband in the White House. Dennis Kucinich is totally dismissed, I guess because he isnt “sexy” but this country would be put on an even keel under someone like him. We as Americans dont need the drama that will be taking place with the Clintons. Bill, if the reporting is correct, comes across as an absurd figure straight out of literature who cant keep from walking around with a permanent erection waiting to cheat on his wife. If one of the books is correct, Hillary was running around getting women to sign statements that they didnt have “sex” with her husband. That is ridiculous!

  • Bill Clinton, who would be in the White House if Hillary wins seems to be at emotional level of teenager. When he found out women were attracted to him as he got older it seems he is always trying to make up for when he was a nerd in high school. So when he sees an attractive woman it is not hard to picture him saying; “oh, you look good hon. Do you think you could meet me at the shopping center later so we could neck? I dont think Hillary has me wired for GPS yet, so it should be safe.” He has google eyed look of someone who never grew up and thats not needed today when there are serious problems the President would have to deal with, not Hillary chasing Bill all over town.
