Once again, it all comes back to the White House

I’ve lost count of exactly how many document dumps there have been in the U.S. Attorney purge scandal — five? six? — but with each passing revelation, the White House’s connection to the controversy grows stronger.

The White House’s former political director was furious at Justice Department officials for disclosing to Congress that the administration had forced out the U.S. attorney in Little Rock, Ark., to make way for a protege of Karl Rove, President Bush’s political adviser, according to documents released late Tuesday.

Then-White House political affairs director Sara Taylor spelled out her frustrations in a Feb. 16 e-mail to Kyle Sampson, then the chief of staff to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

She sent the message after Deputy Attorney General Paul McNulty told the Senate that unlike other federal prosecutors, U.S. Attorney Bud Cummins wasn’t fired for performance reasons, but to make way for former Republican political operative Tim Griffin. Griffin, serving as the interim U.S. attorney, then announced that he wouldn’t seek confirmation to the Arkansas post, but would remain until the Senate confirmed someone else. Griffin has since resigned.

“Tim was put in a horrible position; hung out to dry w/ no heads up,” Taylor lashed out in the e-mail, which was sent from a Republican Party account rather than from her White House e-mail address. “This is not good for his long-term career.”

I’m sure Taylor meant that this is not good for the integrity of the Justice Department and the U.S. Attorney’s office. For that matter, Taylor was lashing out at the Deputy Attorney General for testifying honestly under oath. What, exactly, would she have preferred?

In all, the Justice Department turned over 46 pages of documents to Congress last night, and most of them highlighted a central White House role in managing the response to the scandal.

A few angles to consider:

* Private email accounts: All of the top White House staffers trying to deal with the questions surrounding the purge exclusively used Republican National Committee email accounts. As we know, this is a problem — either these White House officials were circumventing the Presidential Records Act in the hopes of avoiding accountability or they were treating the purge of nine U.S. Attorneys as just another political project. Or both.

* Payback: Sara Taylor suggested in an email to Kyle Sampson, Alberto Gonzales’ former chief of staff, that Bud Cummins face White House-orchestrated trouble for questioning the circumstances surrounding his purge. “I normally don’t like attacking our friends,” Taylor wrote in an email, “but since Bud Cummins is talking to everyone – why don’t we tell the deal on him?” This is the way the Bush gang operates — tell the truth, face the WH’s wrath.

* Fudging the numbers: Emails from January showed that DoJ officials expressly told lawmakers that eight U.S. Attorneys had been purged in 2006. The number was actually nine and 30 were considered for dismissal.

* Dems’ reactions: “These documents show that the White House played an integral role in the firings and their aftermath,” said House Judiciary Chairman John Conyers Jr. (D-Mich.). “This only underscores the need for White House cooperation with this investigation.” Added Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Pat Leahy (D-Vt.), “We need an end to the White House’s stonewalling of our investigations so we can learn the truth.”

There’s plenty of additional coverage at a variety of other sites.

Stay tuned.

Poow widdle Timmeh,

I feel for him like I feel for a pimple on the ass of a flea.

I hope they all hit career brick walls. I’d rather they become welfare bums or more appropriately guests of the US penal system than give them a job with real responsibilities.

  • I guess the White House will now respond to the subpoenas issued by the Dem congress?

Oh, wait. My bad. Subpoenas have only been authorized, not issued.

Time for Dems to stand up on theri own two legs and do what must be done. (Damn, how many times have people on this site as well as others said something like this.)

And when will the Dems bring them all in together to testify, in one big Texas Cage Death Match?

  • Drip, drip, drip…you know that if this is what they are somewhat willing to release, that what they are not willing to release would blow the lid off the whole thing. In fact, I think the written documents are far more revealing than the oral testimony, and I suspect that when/if Rove and the Gang ever appear before the committees, they will be totally on message with the I-don’t-recalls and the I’m-not-awares.

I’m thinking that if there is one more refusal to produce e-mails, or for Rove and Miers to appear, that there should be a call for a special prosecutor and a grand jury empaneled. Nothing like the fear of indictments to get people talking.

  • Time for Dems to stand up on theri own two legs and do what must be done. (Damn, how many times have people on this site as well as others said something like this.)

You’re right. We need to come up with a spiffy acronym or phrase so we don’t have to type it out everytime the Dems chicken out?

    Suggestions?

  • As usual with this gang, trying to understand what’s going on through “serious” journalism is a waste of time. For two recent incisive takes on the purge scandal, I’d recommend Tom Tomorrow and The Onion.

  • This is why it’s important to throw Scooter in the slammer NOW. Make all the Bushies a little more nervous, and maybe one will open up the can of worms big time.

Also, I would highly suggest that they get some action going to acquire the RNC email server drives, and get all the techies who worked on them to come on down for a private chat.

  • Looks like the Dems may be taking their first baby steps–subpoenas issued to Miers and Taylor. Now will they step up to defend their actions and move their cause forward.

  • Taylor wrote in an email, “but since Bud Cummins is talking to everyone – why don’t we tell the deal on him?” This is the way the Bush gang operates — tell the truth, face the WH’s wrath.

Pretty much mirrors the outing of Valerie Plame to push back at Joe Wilson. One size fits all. The ham handed, unquestioning certainty of their actions really speaks volumes about their adherence to doctrine and ShrubCo’s confidence that the total victory of that mind set was a done deal. There was no introspection or second guessing here.

  • From Think Progress:

BREAKING: Top White House Officials Subpoenaed Over Attorney Scandal

Former White House counsel Harriet Miers and former top Karl Rove aide Sara Taylor, who served as White House political director before resigning last month, have been issued subpoenas over their connections to the U.S. attorney scandal.

UPDATE: These are the first subpoenas delivered to the White House regarding the attorney firings. The House Judiciary Committee issued the subpoena to Miers, and the Senate Judiciary Committee issued the subpoena to Taylor. Emails showing Taylor and Miers deeply involved in the Justice Department’s response to the scandal were released last night.

UPDATE II: The AP reports, “The Senate Judiciary Committee’s subpoena for Taylor compels her to testify on July 11, while the House Judiciary Committee’s subpoena for Miers compels her testimony the next day.”

UPDATE III: CNN’s legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin reports, “The White House has made clear it will cite executive privilege for conversations that took place within the White House on the U.S. attorney matter, and if the people with those conversations happen to have subsequently left the White House, that doesn’t matter. They’re still going to cite executive privilege, and these people are not going to be allowed to testify anytime soon, it appears, if the White House remains as it has been. … Even if they want to testify.”

    FINALLY

  • Let’s remember that Tim Griffin is now the political director of Fred Thompson’s “campaign.” Says everything you need to know about “Mr. Integrity.”

This just reminds me of what the writer of the “I Claudius” series once said, that he couldn’t figure out how to write it until he realized that the Claudians were a mob family. Personally, I think Tony Soprano had more integrity and loyalty to his family than any Bushie from Bushie himself on down has to anyone in “the family.” Unless, of course, you’re Alberto Gonzales, who knows where all the bodies are buried and has – like Shane did on “The Shield” – written it all down to be provided to congress in the event of his “expedient demise.”

  • Geez, I really don’t care for Bubba-Ya, but if this is all we have to worry about when our troops are sitting in the middle of a Civil War in Iraq, no wonder the rest of the world laughs at us. WHO CARES? We are in the DANGER ZONE as far as the National Debt is concerned! This means that we may not be able to afford the services that our people (US CITIZENS) need in a few years, BUT we are concerned about whether the White House did or did not know about the firings etc. Let’s get our priorities straight people! Oh I forgot to say: the White May or May Not Have Known More About The Firings … Naaa Naaaa Naaaa Naaaa Naaaaaaa Naaaaaaaa GROW UP PEOPLE!

  • Wow. #12, if you do not understand the underlying principles involved in the attorney purge, and the intentionS of these acts, and the serious threat they pose to your (all of our) freedoms and the integrity of the Constitution, then maybe you really should STFU.

  • The department of Justice serves at the pleasure of the president.
Arrest author of comment #12 and send him to Pakistan or Egypt for saying anything about our troops. “I don’t want to hear from him again. Understand Gonzales?”

““I normally don’t like attacking our friends,” Taylor wrote in an email, “but since Bud Cummins is talking to everyone – why don’t we tell the deal on him?” This is the way the Bush gang operates — tell the truth, face the WH’s wrath.”

State Dept. whistleblower told how the intelligence community (under Bush) gathers intel. on all ‘possible players’ to use against them at a later date if necessary. So I believe they have a deal on most everyone to blackmail them into submission or at least they try to have a deal on everyone.

I also believe that this was what Ashcroft and Comey refused to sign off on which caused the the ‘Hospital’ confrontation…spying on American citizens and wiretapping the house and Senate members, the judiciary, State governments as well. I belive Bush did it anyway for as long as he could get away with it saying, “well if they’re not doing anything wrong then they have nothing to worry about”. Remember, this is Ashcroft (annoint me in oil Ashcroft) we’re talking about.
“Tell the deal on him”. Can you be more ruthless. What’s next…murder family members?
These WH mobsters need to be held accountable. They operate completely without morality.
