Playing the race card

It’s rarely wise to jump to conclusions, but General Services Administration chief Lurita Alexis Doan certainly appears to have violated the Hatch Act. In fact, that’s what the Office of Special Counsel, headed by a Bush partisan, concluded after a thorough investigation.

In January, Karl Rove’s office conducted a highly partisan political presentation for GSA higher-ups, after which Doan asked GSA political appointees how they could “help ‘our candidates'” in the 2008 elections. After several credible GSA employees came forward to report this, the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee called Doan to testify about politicizing her non-partisan government agency — and she failed (miserably) to explain her conduct.

Congressional Republicans are anxious to support Doan, but are having trouble defending her decisions. So, they’ve moved on to Plan B — accuse her critics of being misogynistic racists.

In a hearing Wednesday examining the findings that Bush appointee Lurita Doan of the General Services Administration appeared to violate the Hatch Act by politicking in a federal workplace, several Republican Congressmen played the race card. On a number of occasions, Rep. Tom Davis (R-VA), the ranking Republican on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, led his colleagues in accusing their Democratic counterparts of targeting Doan because she was a black woman and a Republican.

“You’re an African-American Republican so you’ve got a big bull’s eye on you,” Davis, the former chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, said to Administrator Doan at one stage. […]

Davis wasn’t the only Republican member in the House hearing to make such an allegation. “You’re a Republican, a minority, and a woman, a GOP contributor, and they’ve targeted you, they’re circling you to come after you,” said Rep. John Mica (R-FL), who objected to the hearing at various occasions.

Rep. Chris Shays (R-CT) also said, “I find that when an African-American is a Republican, somehow, she is treated differently by Congress.”

My dismay for Republican-style politics is generally a daily occurrence, but this is uniquely offensive.

There has to be a way to conduct political affairs in a more honorable way than with these truly pathetic accusations. In yesterday’s hearing, we had white men accusing black women of targeting Doan because of her race and gender. Even by the low standards of the House GOP caucus, this is a special kind of stupid.

In a way, it’s a tacit admission that Republicans have nothing of any substance to offer Doan in terms of a meaningful defense. She violated the Hatch Act and got caught. But instead of dealing with this reality, several GOP lawmakers decided to question the motives of those who dared to point out the problem. To criticize Doan, they suggested, is to harbor some kind of prejudice.

Should Dems hold Republicans to this standard? Is every attack on Hillary Clinton evidence of sexism? Is every criticism of Barack Obama evidence of racism? Is every negative critique of John Kerry proof of anti-Catholic bigotry? Is every attack on John Edwards evidence of an anti-southern bias?

Of course not. But that’s the road these Republicans were going down yesterday. Left with nothing else, they felt it necessary to introduce race and gender into the mix, hoping demagoguery would pick up where reason leaves off.

It’s a disgrace. Concern about fairly obvious wrongdoing, in some Republicans’ eyes, legitimizes charges of bigotry. It’s political discourse at its most painfully insipid.

My answer is YES to all of the above. I’m tired of arguing the merits of everything. There literally is not enough time in the day to track all the various scandals going on. You’ve got to give the Bushies credit – they certainly are thorough with their scumbaggery.

  • The fact that these republican sleazeballs still have influence and power in our government speaks volumes about how dumbed down the American electorate really is. For decades they have won elections based on the republican attack machine that uses emotional wedge issues to divide and conquer. Their platform of tax cuts, supply side, trickle down economics has been proven over and over again to be detrimental to our nation’s economy, and they have no real plan to improve the everyday lives of millions of average Americans. Their only ambition in governemnt is to enrich their corporate puupet masters and their business partners. Yet, they still get elected. Unbelievable.

  • I mean it is not like the GOP isn’t actively hostile to African Americans while at the same time verbally trying to them to joing their party. Gee I wonder why Shays doesn’t get why African American politicians who are Republican are looked a little askance at?

  • I’ve never met Ms. Doan in person, but I did watch the hearings and frankly I would have sworn she was Caucasian. It’s never been about either her race or her gender, anyway, it’s been about a partisan hack using her office for purposes that are forbidden under the law.

What are these robots in Congress thinking? I guess they figure they’ll be out of a job fairly soon anyway so it doesn’t matter if they make themselves look even more foolish than they have already.

  • I can’t help but also notice that while all of Doan’s defenders are Republicans (naturally) none of them are black nor are they women.

  • “I find that when an African-American is a Republican, somehow, she is treated differently by Congress.”

She is treated differently – by Congressional Republicans.

  • I’ve never met Ms. Doan in person, but I did watch the hearings and frankly I would have sworn she was Caucasian.

Same. I never knew she was black… and frankly it doesn’t matter.

  • What a bunch of pigs, no offense to hogs everywhere. We are witnessing the devolution of the ReThug before our very eyes. To describe these heathens as disgusting, repugnant and revolting is too great of a compliment.

  • When you comb the silliness out of their argument, what’s left is a sense of entitlement to corruption. Taken at face value, it ends up saying: All of us white guys are crooks, why won’t you allow this from the black lady?

I don’t know what they’re smoking over there, but they may want to talk with the Dukestir or maybe DeLay. It’s not just corrupt black ladies who are getting busted.

  • What I can’t figure out is, what are they trying so hard to protect? The right of an agency head to demand partisan loyalty even when it conflicts with the law, under threat of no raises, bonuses or promotions? The right of the WH political office to use the government and the agencies as part of a political campaign? Why is there no outrage over tax dollars – your money and mone – going to pay for this, instead of the jobs they’re supposed to be doing?

I really, really hate this moral relativism that has infected everything – “Well, look what they did in the Clinton administration – how about that?” When did people stop objecting to actions and policies because they were wrong, and decide to make their decisions about right and wrong based on the political affiliation of the person or entity involved?

I know I sound like Pollyanna, and maybe it’s just the experience of raising two children to adulthood and trying to instill the concept of doing the right thing because it is the right thing to do, while all around was the message that rules didn’t apply to the “special people.” It’s not fun to have to answer the question, “Mom, how come it’s okay for her to break the rules, but it’s not okay for me?” when, having responded that it isn’t right, have to find an answer for, “well than, why is she doing it?”

Really just fed up with all of this.

  • Tom Davis is a fine one to talk about racism and bigotry… IIRC, it was his campaign headquarters which got “updated” one weekend last fall. Someone, using the same gold paint and the same kind of leters with which the info (name, position) was painted on the glass, added BIGOT to it. They didn’t even notice it and the “extra” stayed on for 3 days bfore being removed (after a newspaper published an article, with a photo)

  • Re: Racerx @ #9
If she’s black then so am I.

Come on now. Leave that kind of talk to Flush Rimjaughb and his remedial derelict-heads.

  • Gee, sounds like a re-run of the “Barbara Boxer was mean to Condi,” whinge-a-thon. How did that work out? Cretins.

The ReThugs are such bigots they think they can convince the people they regularly oppress that they really want to be BFF by kissing up to a crook. We’re talking about idiots who pitted Keyes against Obama because Hey! Obama is black, Keyes is black, that’ll confuse people!

    StFu.

    Also, what Homer said.

re: Her appearance. I invite you all to come out to DC sometime and check out the wide array of hues available to the human species. If you can’t make it I invite you to consider the very broad definition of African-American. Under it, Racerx might well be African-American.

  • Hey JKap, that’s BS. Looking at her picture, she is obviously not what anyone would call “black”. And if anyone can be considered a minority and then play the race card, we’re off to the races (no pun intended) and any serious protection of minority rights becomes utterly meaningless.

Digging around, I am not surprised to see that she has made millions of dollars by “being black”:

…Doan succeeded by aggressively pursuing potential customers, working remarkably hard and making use of preference programs run by the Small Business Administration

…in 1995, five years after she started her company, all of its $2.8 million in prime contracts were awarded noncompetitively…

    http://www.govexec.com/features/0207-01/0207-01s2s1.htm

BTW, I agree that race is not the issue with her crimes at the GSA. Corruption is the issue, and obviously corrupt Republicans like Ms Doan will take advantage of an alleged minority status just like they would take advantage of anything else.

  • Congressional Republicans demonstrate on a daily basis a total lack of integrity. They know what they are suggesting is just bull yet they throw it out there anyway. Not any mention of how she broke the law but just how she is being victimized.
They truly are the party of hypocrisy who refuse oversight and place themselves above the rule of the law. When you catch them they claim they are just being victimized. When you sentence them they demand pardons. It never once occurs to them to stop breaking the law.
So we have Rep. Tom Davis (R-VA); John Mica (R-FL); and Chris Shays (R-CT) who have thrown integrity out the window, ignore that Doan broke the law and pushed contracts to friends who overcharged costing tax payers millions, and sunk to the lowest level of an elected official by claiming Doan is being “picked on” because she’s black. 3 more bigoted Republicans show their faces.

  • Lurita Doan is black?

    here’s her GSA picture:

And here’s what I get when I go to that link:

    We apologize for the inconvenience…
The link or location you used does not exist or has changed.

That’s some quick action by our gubmint officials, that is!

I did a cursory search of the employee directory, and found Dorito’s listing. But there’s no picture there. Funny, that it seemed to be there earlier today when RacerX looked for it, and now it’s gone. Such an amazing coinkydink!

  • Tried your link, Racerx #9. This is what I got:

    Thank you for visiting gsa.gov.

Guess this means she’s now invisible, but surely not transparent.

  • Maybe someone should wrap their own tactics around their neck. Ask them if they are practicing “affirmative action” by pointing out her color and if so, isn’t that “special treatment”?

  • I didn’t know she was black either I also saw the video. Maybe the R’s use stronger criteria like the folks down in South Africa used to.

  • Another of the many reasons why I will never like Nancy Pelosi. The corruption is so widespread and rampant you just can’t keep up with it and good old Nancy has given Bush permission to do whatever he likes because she has publicly announced that there will be no oversight, no holding him accountable because she has taken impeachment “off the table”. Thanks Nancy.

The really pathetic part is that no matter what her other accomplishments, she will go down in history as the Speaker of the House who took Impeachment off the table during the administration of the worst and most corrupt president in the history of our country. Way to go Nancy.

  • Does anyone besides me remember when the GSA was the GAO -Government Accountability Office? I guess when they dropped accountability from the name they decided they didn’t need to practice it either

  • Uh aren’t these these playas of the race card the same ones who used a black criminal (Willie Horton) to play on white fears of a crime wave if Dukakis was elected?

Or play up on welfare “queens”? Or slam the OJ verdict?

Well, kiss my yellow ass. They are!

  • Looking at her picture, she is obviously not what anyone would call “black”.

    Wrong. Trust me.

And I found her picture on the GSA by doing a search for her name.

Does anyone besides me remember when the GSA was the GAO -Government Accountability Office?

m.a.a., GAO used to = General Accounting Office. They changed the name to Government Accountability Office a few years ago. Completely different branch. They are probably the only branch of the exec. that hasn’t been overrun by hacks and have consistently produced reports that bash the crap out of everything from the abstinence only programs to the conduct of the war.

    CPAs save the day!
