Lieberman lobbies for confrontation with Iran

Earlier this week, Joe Lieberman said, “Although no one desires a conflict with Iran, the fact is that the Iranian government by its actions has declared war on us.” Today, he elaborated on this idea in a Wall Street Journal op-ed.

As Lieberman describes it, Iran is not only evil, it’s busy. “Iran’s actions in Iraq fit a larger pattern of expansionist, extremist behavior across the Middle East today,” Lieberman argues. “In addition to sponsoring insurgents in Iraq, Tehran is training, funding and equipping radical Islamist groups in Lebanon, Palestine and Afghanistan — where the Taliban now appear to be receiving Iranian help in their war against the government of President Hamid Karzai and its NATO defenders.”

And, of course, Tehran is, according to Lieberman, also responsible for attacks on us.

America now has a solemn responsibility to utilize the instruments of our national power to convince Tehran to change its behavior, including the immediate cessation of its training and equipping extremists who are killing our troops.

Most of this work must be done by our diplomats, military and intelligence operatives in the field. But Iran’s increasingly brazen behavior also presents a test of our political leadership here at home. When Congress reconvenes next week, all of us who are privileged to serve there should set aside whatever partisan or ideological differences divide us to send a clear, strong and unified message to Tehran that it must stop everything it is doing to bring about the death of American service members in Iraq.

It is of course everyone’s hope that diplomacy alone can achieve this goal. Iran’s activities inside Iraq were the central issue raised by the U.S. ambassador to Iraq in his historic meeting with Iranian representatives in Baghdad this May. However, as Gen. Bergner said on Monday, “There does not seem to be any follow-through on the commitments that Iran has made to work with Iraq in addressing the destabilizing security issues here.” The fact is, any diplomacy with Iran is more likely to be effective if it is backed by a credible threat of force — credible in the dual sense that we mean it, and the Iranians believe it.

As Ezra put it, “So when Congress reconvenes next week, all members should set aside party and ideology to tell Iran that, if they don’t stop doing these things we can’t prove they’re doing, we will invade them. Spectacular plan.” Indeed, I can’t wait to hear Lieberman’s pitch for a) how the military is prepared for another war in the Middle East; and b) how we’ll assemble some kind of international support given the Bush/Cheney/Lieberman track record thus far.

And speaking of “thus far,” Lieberman manages to include his perspective on what a confrontation with Iran will mean for his beloved confrontation with Iraq.

I hope the new revelations about Iran’s behavior will also temper the enthusiasm of some of those in Congress who are advocating the immediate withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq. Iran’s purpose in sponsoring attacks on American soldiers, after all, is clear: It hopes to push the U.S. out of Iraq and Afghanistan, so that its proxies can then dominate these states. Tehran knows that an American retreat under fire would send an unmistakable message throughout the region that Iran is on the rise and America is on the run. That would be a disaster for the region and the U.S.

So, as Lieberman sees it, the United States needs to remain in Iraq indefinitely, no matter the cost, in order to deny Iran opportunities, which they wouldn’t have if we’d only force a military confrontation and get it over with.

As Matt Yglesias concluded, “I like that he’s managing to compress what should be a years-long transition from moderate Democrat to psychotic rightwinger into just a few months.”

Seems like these neocon morons have been test driving this method for some time. An excerpt from the most recent Digby post at Hullabaloo, note the last sentence:

“Neoconservative hawks have scored a new victory in the administration of President George W. Bush with the hiring by Vice President Richard Cheney of a prominent hawk on China policy. China specialist and Princeton University professor Aaron Friedberg has been named deputy national security adviser and director of policy planning on Cheney’s high-powered foreign policy staff headed by I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby, one of the most influential foreign policy strategists in the administration. Libby also served as the general counsel to the Cox Commission, a House Select Committee that issued a report in 1999 accusing China of large-scale espionage to advance its nuclear weapons program and was soundly criticized by many China scholars for its factual errors, unsupported allegations, and shoddy analysis.”

  • What would be nice is if the media would quit giving this guy a microphone and a camera.

I honestly believe that Harry Reid needs to call Lieberman’s bluff and just invite him to dispense with the charade that he is “really a Democrat at heart.” Tell him that when the Connecticut for Lieberman party has a majority in the Senate, he will have the seniority he needs to chair committees, but until then, hand over the gavel and go see if the GOP really wants him all that bad on their team.

And, may I just say once more – thanks to the people of Connecticut, and all those Democrats who stuck by Lieberman’s side and refused to campaign for the Democratic primary winner, Ned Lamont. Lamont would probably have been no barn-burner of a Senator, but he would be better than Lieberman. My dog would be better than Lieberman.

    Disgusting.

  • Joe Lie gets his rocks off by dreaming of bombing the s**t out of every Muslim country in the ME. Who’d’a thunk that those old Catholic priests were right afterall: jerking off will make you stupid and blind…

  • What would be nice would be if the Democrats wouldn’t be such AIPAC suckups, voting nearly unanamously for a resolution that gives Bush every excuse he will need to attack Iran (as if he needed any). Dennis Kucinich, to his eternal credit, voted against it. He was the ONLY Dem to do so. The resolution, voted 411 to 2, asserts the following LIE: “Iran has aggressively pursued a clandestine effort to arm itself with nuclear weapons”

Note that I have no idea if Iran is trying to get a nuke or not. Nobody knows, apparently. I think we all know it would be suicide for them to ever try to use one. But the congress is now on record affirming this neocon assertion as fact, along with a bunch of other crap that’s dubious. Sound familiar?

Mark my words, that resolution’s going to come back to bite us on the ass, and Holy Joe will be the guy waving it around.

  • “Tehran…must stop everything it is doing to bring about the death of American service members in Iraq.”

    So should Washington.

Lieberman sucks. And to think he was only 600 votes and a bullet away from the presidency. Would he have better than Bush? Hard to say. The one good thing about Gore losing is that Lieberman lost too.

  • Let me preface, in the event of rightwingers or NSA types lurking on the boards, that i say this not as a defense of Saddam in any way, shape or form, but as a reminder of the importance of having enough vision to see more than just the next move on the chessboard and to avoid unintended consequences.

Joe Lie wants us to stay in Iraq because Iraq is not strong enough to avoid becoming a mere client state for Iran, who is our enemy.

Iraq was strong enough to not only avoid being a client state, but to battle Iran to at worst a draw — until be bombed Iraq’s conventional military capabilities, communication, and leadership into oblivion.

If our first order priority was to keep Iran at bay, why the hell didn’t we just leave Iraq the way it was — that is, hating Iran and capable of neutralizing Iran?

Moreover, why doesn’t anyone want to talk about why Iran is suddenly our #1 enemy when, just a few short years ago when Clinton and Khatami were the respective presidents, cultural and sports exchanges and other forms of dialogue were on the rise and we appeared headed towards better, not worse, relations with Iran?

The world would be less complicated if Rethugs (and Joe Lie) weren’t so hateful of everyone with skin darker than their own or of anyone who controls any of the oil they and their friends are so addicted to.

  • Hey Mumblely Joe Lie!

After you. Personally lead that first wave then maybe I’ll think about it.

    Signed,

    The Rest of the World

  • It would also be nice if, when blowhards and turncoats such as Lieberman write this drivel, real American patriots such as Russ Feingold or Al Gore are given equal space to counterpoint (similar to USA Today).

But then that would tarnish the thoughtful, serious, and thoroughly reasonable narrative that the publication would see put forth.

  • “Tehran…must stop everything it is doing to bring about the death of American service members in Iraq.”

    So should Washington.

  • Lieberphlegm starts out with a lie, “Although no one desires a conflict with Iran”. Read some of the comments at the bottom of the linked article if you don’t believe me. Jerusalem Post: Second Strike They just want the US to do it for them.

  • Anne:

“My dog would be better than Lieberman.”

And certainly easier to look at. One more compliment to your dog; he’s probably smarter than a lot of Connecticut voters. Way to go, morons. Let’s see if we can fight a three-front war, this time protecting Israel.

  • Gosh, Lieberman must know a lot of people we don’t know to come up with all that insightful information. He sure is smart. He’s got it all figured out and it all results in more death and destruction but he claims that’s inevitable anyway.

“So when Congress reconvenes next week, all members should set aside party and ideology to tell Iran that, if they don’t stop doing these things we can’t prove they’re doing, we will invade them. ”
I got a better idea. When congress reconvenes all members should set aside party and ideology and tell Joe to STFU. He doesn’t have some inside track on the best way to proceed. He needs to leave Iran alone and quit talking war to provoke them. NONE of what he says is true nor the stupid conclusions he comes to. I wish he would just leave America and go to Jerusalem where he belongs though I doubt if many there would appreciate his ridiculous propaganda. He should be banned from public speaking and writing because he is such an American embarrassment. Jerusalem Joe has got to go and he will come next election because he is irrelevant and has become everything he once hated.

  • I wonder if the Lieberwhiner has ever looked at a map of the middle east. Not to excuse anything Iran has done, but it’s bordered on the west by Iraq, on the east by Afghanistan and on the south by the Persian Gulf.

Imagine if another country, say Iran, had invaded and occupied Canada and Mexico — and staged warships in the Gulf of Mexico — with the expressed goal of installing “friendly” governments, building permanent military bases and staying for decades. Would we find a way to get our dog in that hunt? Damned right.

Not only are we sitting on their borders with troops and strike capabilities, when they tried to talk with us early in this sham WOT, Bush/Cheney refused. Bush named them part in his “axis of evil.” Now Joe and his band of chicken-shits are openly talking about attacking them.

According to Bush/Cheney, Iran can work with us or against us. Unfortunately, there’s nothing to suggest we’re willing to work with them unless they agree to our terms before we start talking. That Iran should attempt to thwart our efforts in Iraq, having seen our vulnerability and after all our provocation should come as no surprise.

Then again, maybe Joe is as familiar with the political map of the middle east as Cheney and the old PNAC cabal. Maybe Joe figures provoking Iran is just hurrying the inevitable. After all, we’re already in the neighborhood.

You’re a very sick man, Joe.

  • Shouldn’t someone be working to get Joe Lieberman into a mental hospital?

    Just curious.
