Limbaugh’s demographic

Michael Crowley notes an unremarkable human-interest story out of Joplin, Mo., about a middle-aged man who has a home, but prefers to live in his car. Apparently, the man, Steven Graham, is annoying his neighbors quite a bit “disturbing the peace with loud music and obscenity-laced tirades.”

A neighbor said, “Every day he’s out there. He never goes into the house. He sleeps out there, he eats out there, he watches TV, he plays guitar…. Everything that you do in your house, he does out there.”

Graham acknowledges that he spends most of his time in his car, but says there’s a reason.

An extension cord runs from the house to the car, providing power for a 13-inch TV that rests in the passenger seat, an oscillating fan and a radio.

“I get better reception there than I do in there,” he said, pointing at the house. “I listen to Rush (Limbaugh) every day just about.”

Noted without comment.

I don’t buy it. Better reception? Nah, he just wants to be confrontational and subject everyone around him to the wild rantings of Mr. Oxycontin. Loud, obnoxious, and arrogant.

He’s what we call a Republican.

  • Let’s try that again. Here’s the quote:

[T]hose who cite the Fox News Channel as their primary source of news stand out among the TV news audience for their negative evaluations of news organizations’ practices. Fully 63% of Americans who count Fox as their main news source say news stories are often inaccurate – a view held by fewer than half of those who cite CNN (46%) or network news (41%) as their main source.

Similarly, Fox viewers are far more likely to say the press is too critical of America (52% vs. 36% of CNN viewers and 29% of network news viewers). And the Fox News Channel audience gives starkly lower ratings to network news programs and national newspapers such as the New York Times and Washington Post…

For example, fully 71% of Fox News Republicans hold an unfavorable opinion of major national newspapers, compared with 52% of Republicans who use other sources, and 33% of those who are not Republicans.

  • What the hell did that have to do with anything? Why did you post that? You obviously don’t spend much time in MO. Gives new meaning to the right to bear arms.

  • I happened to hear that live.

He said the guy does things in his yard that you normally do in a room…in your house.

Rush seemed to be pleased that he had such good demographics. He even leads in that kind of market.

  • C’mon, CB, this is nutpicking. (In a way that the FOX News Effect mentioned above is not, being statistical.)

  • Spent a lot of time in Joplin – I think middle age is about 25- the only place I ever saw people deep-fry hamburgers

  • “Allen K. said:

    Huh?
    Yeah…
    I see what you mean.
Because Limbaugh deserves every benefit of every doubt.
Ya know, what with him mocking Parkinsons patients and what not.
What you don’t seem to get, Allen,
is that there are credible people with whom one engages in debate.
And then there’s the Limbaughs and Robertsons and Phelps and the rest of that ilk… Whom one only relieves bladders on with scorn.
    Does that clear it up?
If not, I’d like to point you towards the insipid stylingz of one David Brooks.
I think he has the wealth of wisdom you hunger for.

  • Comic relief? Water seeking it’s own level?
I liked what Meatballs55 said about Joplin’s middle age being about 25, deep-frying their hamburgers; it is too silly to contemplate.
