Jackson accuses Obama of ‘acting white’

As serious as the controversy in Jena, La., is, there’s no reason for a veteran civil rights leader to accuse an African-American presidential candidate of “acting white” simply because he hasn’t emphasized the issue to the leader’s liking. And yet, that’s exactly what’s happened with Jesse Jackson and Barack Obama.

The Rev. Jesse Jackson sharply criticized Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama Tuesday over his reaction to the arrest of six black juveniles in Jena, Louisiana on murder charges, accusing the Illinois senator of “acting like he’s white,” according to a South Carolina newspaper.

The comments reportedly came during a speech at Columbia’s historically black Benedict College.

The State newspaper reports Jackson later said he did not recall saying Obama is “acting like he’s white,” but continued to condemn the Illinois Democrat as well as the other presidential candidates for not bringing more attention to this issue.

Jackson, who endorsed Obama earlier this year, said, “If I were a candidate, I’d be all over Jena…. Jena is a defining moment, just like Selma was a defining moment.”

As a substantive matter, I think Jackson is on firm ground imploring the country to take the Jena Six matter more seriously. It is, as I argued the other day, one of the more painful examples of racism in recent memory. Everyone — the media, politicians, etc. — should demonstrate a sincere interest in what’s transpired.

But “acting white”? That’s cheap and offensive; Jackson really ought to know better.

For what it’s worth, it’s not as if Obama has been ignoring the Jena controversy. Last week, long before Jackson’s comments, the senator’s campaign released a statement not only condemning the charges against the Jena six, but also calling on the local Louisiana district attorney to drop the excessive charges brought in the case.

“When nooses are being hung in high schools in the 21st century, it’s a tragedy,” the Obama statement said. “It shows that we still have a lot of work to do as a nation to heal our racial tensions.” Indeed, as Andrew Sullivan noted, Obama’s been talking about the case quite a bit recently.

Apparently, by Jackson’s standards, this is insufficient. Worse, it’s “acting white.” Wow.

Because Jackson’s comments in South Carolina have percolated up to the national news, Jackson’s Rainbow PUSH Coalition felt compelled to issue a statement responding to the uproar this afternoon.

I reaffirm my commitment to vote for Sen. Barack Obama. He has remarkably transcended race, however the impact of Katrina and Jena makes America’s unresolved moral dilemma of race unavoidable. I think Jena is another defining moment of the issue of race and the criminal justice system. This issue requires direct and bold leadership. I commend Sen. Obama for speaking out and demanding fairness on this defining issue. Any attempt to dilute my support for Sen. Obama will not succeed.

It’s a curious statement. First, it doesn’t deny the “acting white” charge. Second, he alludes to efforts to “dilute” his support for Obama, though, as Greg Sargent noted, it’s not at all clear that anyone is trying to drive a wedge between them. If anything, Jackson was doing that all on his own with his comments in South Carolina.

Sullivan makes the case that this could inadvertently help Obama, by positioning him as a new generation of leaders who are detached from the old guard. Obama is just as committed to civil rights, the argument goes, but this is a new message from someone taking a new approach.

Maybe, maybe not, we’ll see how this plays out. In the short term, though, I think Jackson owes Obama an apology.

So… Jesse gives Obama his Sister Soljah moment without Obama looking for it.

Methinks Jesse is smarter than he appears.

  • Forgive me for pointing out the obvious but Obama has ZERO chance of being elected President if most white Americans don’t see him as ‘acting white’.

I don’t care how smart Obama is or how great his policies are. If he has Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton as his top advisors then a huge chunk of white America will not vote for him.

I always thought that the perfect Sister Soljah moment for virtually any Democratic candidate would be to tell off Al Sharpton publicly and say that the candidate will not meet and will not listen to anything Sharpton says until he admits his serious mistakes concerning Tawana Brawly.

If the leading Democrat did that he might lose a few votes on the left but he would gain a ton of votes in the center.

  • I move that the Irreverend Jackson be held upside down over a snake pit until he can adequately explain what “Acting White” and “Acting Black.”

I wondered when we were going to hear from that poseur. I guess that’s what I get.

  • Er, that should be:

explain what he means by “Acting White” and “Acting Black.”

  • It seems Jackson’s definition of “acting white” is that white people to like him.

With Obama, this whole black/white thing is a bit more complex than Jackson makes it. Obama’s dad is a black African, his mom white, and he spent much of his childhood in Hawaii and Indonesia. His parents divorced when he was two, and his mother married an Indonesian. So, he’s not going to act like he grew up in New York or Alabama, or Hyde Park. He even wrote a memoir about how he didn’t know his African father.

So, how does one act black when you’re raised by a white mom and Indonesian dad in Jarkarta? This whole debate is meaningless, but very helpful for Mr. Obama.

  • “And sometimes you feel you have to behave as a man and not talk about women’s issues. I’m sympathetic — she wants to be commander in chief.”
    -Elizabeth Edwards on Hillary Clinton

Maybe it seems like Clinton and Obama are acting like white men, since every US president has been a white man. On a reptilian level we’re programmed to believe If you are running a serious campaign for president, then you must be a white man, It’s not true, but since it’s always panned out that way, there’s bound to be some confusion about it this election.

Our next president will not be a white man.

  • And just think, when I criticized Ned Lamont for standing next to Jackson and The Rev Al, I was called the racist.

  • Claiming that “Jackson really ought to know better” ignores the basic fact that Jackson’s entire career is based on being a shameless race-baiter and huckster.

  • Jackson probably just really wants to get the case publicity. He could feel let down that Obama isn’t succeeding at that, and the remark may have seemed like the only thing that would really “get his goat.” As a white person, though, I feel offended when non-white people either without knowing me treat me like I’m racist, or seem to give me “tests” to see if I’m racist, sort of like how a woman who’s maybe interested in you puts you through a wringer to figure out what you’re like and contrives questions or situations toward that end. So the implication that white people don’t give a shit bothers me a little, but, this is a concern I’m having to give up on because it’s proving true all too often that black people are justified for frequently wondering whether the whites they meet are racist.

I’m a northerner, by the way, so I don’t know if this will sound funny to people from the south, not really knowing what it’s like down there.

  • Memekiller states the obvious that Jackson somehow overlooks. Obama is not a product of inner city slums nor rural south prayer meetings so he does not act like blacks from those backgrounds act.

It is a human failing that we assign cultural characteristics to colors…instead of to the actual cultural conditions that produce the characteristics.

When all is said and done…Obama acts like Obama and Jackson acts like Jackson. Neither is stamped from a cookie cutter where all look and speak alike. No matter the color of the cookie. Even people from the same household are often very different. Is Jackson showing prejudice with this statement?

  • Wow, more moral posing from Jesse. Yup, that’s the guy to stand on his moral molehill and chastise others. This is the same Jesse who made sure the three falsely accused Duke Lacrosse players were sufficiently villified. Ol’ Jesse, that modern leader of men even offered the stripper who made the false accusations a scholarship. Funny, since that day Jesse has been awfully quiet about that debacle.

  • neil wilson,

If the leading Democrat did that he might lose a few votes on the left but he would gain a ton of votes in the center.

From what group in the center will these votes come from? Reagan Democrats? Security Moms?

I’m skepticaL that there are a bunch of centrist voters who will suddenly support Obama only upon his public denunciation of Al Sharpton. Care to elaborate on your hypothesis there?

  • In this day and age, the whole Jena affair is both appalling and embarrassing.

That being said, Obama is half-white, so I’d like to think that that would mean that both blacks and whites could look at him and see a racial connection, if that’s important to them. This being America, I suppose that both groups will look at him and neither will see a connection, which is too bad. He could be a bridge, but we are likely to make him into a fence.

  • “With Obama, this whole black/white thing is a bit more complex than Jackson makes it. Obama’s dad is a black African, his mom white, and he spent much of his childhood in Hawaii and Indonesia. His parents divorced when he was two, and his mother married an Indonesian. So, he’s not going to act like he grew up in New York or Alabama, or Hyde Park. He even wrote a memoir about how he didn’t know his African father.”

So you’re saying he represents another example of the American “melting pot”, kind of like Tiger woods? Wouldn’t that be a heck of an endorsement?

  • As a white southerner I was horrified and appalled when I read about the nooses and then about the Jena 6 being the only ones charged with crimes. It offends me to the very core of my being that their is such institutional rascism in this country in this century.

All I know is that evryone in that town that should have known better, school administrators, the police, the DA etc should have diffused this situation long before it escalated to that. And the fact that the so called adults only added to it is appalling.

  • Rev. Jackson’s statement only goes to show that the minorities are the ones that keeps Racisim alive! If black people really want to be equal why does Rev Jackson indicate that there is a difference between White people and Black peoples opinions? I’m positivily sure that if Rev Jackson’s statements had been made by a “white” person that the entire Black community would be up in arms! So, whats the difference if it comes from a Black man? It’s still racisim! Maybe Black people should be just as concerned, if not more concerned with how their supposed spokespeople for their race act and talk, instead of always pointing the finger at what white people say.

  • It will be a great day when Jesse Jackson pays as much attention to black-on-white violence as he does to white-on-black violence. Racism will never end as long as people like Jackson and Sharpton fan the flames every time there’s an issue between blacks and whites. They aren’t color-blind (who is?), but they NEVER come down on the side of a white victim of black violence.
It’s classic “reverse racism”. I.E.: It’s OK to have a “National Association for the Advancement of Colored People” (NAACP), but NOT OK to have a “National Association for the Advancement of White People”. It’s OK to have a “United Negro College Fund”, but NOT OK to have a “United Caucasian College Fund”.
Jackson and Sharpton feed off of racism. It would be better if they concerned themselves with basic right and wrong, instead of the color of the parties involved.

  • The fact that O’Bama is black has nothing to do with his campaign, I think that he would be a fine candidate. But Obama is muslim & will never become President!!! If he does I am leaving this country. 9/11 was a marking point in US history & if you think voting for someone with the same beliefs as the terrorists won’t make passage of those (PEOPLE) easier there will be ways. As for the revered REV. Jackson the man is a blithering idiot & loves to find the limelight as often as he can. He is a fading star, & once he sees his twinkle deminishing he jumps on any issue he can to get exposure for his ludacris organization!!!! You have fun now debating this trumped excuse for exposure, while we real American’s get on with life & our jobs. LOL

  • Jackson & Sharpton are more racist than all of us combined & if they truly aren’t then they sure do love feeding off it just to pay their bills. There are far too many people that put their hard earned money behind a fools like these. America would be a better place if we could just move on, be a nation of ONE PEOPLE UNDER GOD with liberty and JUSTICE for all. Sure there are bad things that happen to every race, but as the last statement mentions NOTHING IS EVER BROUGHT UP ABOUT BLACK ON WHITE VIOLENCE IS THERE? I also think that every single organization that has BLACK or HISPANIC or any type of descriptive racial name should be shutdown. It is ridiculous that they were even allowed to open. If a WHITE person had to even try & start an organization or say college fund? HA!!! They would probably be arrested for being KKK!!!

  • Good evening,

Firstly, Jesse Jackson has a lot of nerve calling anyone anything. He makes his way around the country charging money for people to hear him speak about civil rights. I am starting to get sick of the old civil rights movement. In my opinion the problem is that there has been no movement, the movement is idle. Secondly, a new younger movement is afraid to challenge America because the older movement is afraid to die a violent death. Ok, on to my point.

My point is Barack Obama is a Faithful husband and father! How about this Jesse? Free Mumia Abu Jamal, or talk about the government leaving Assata Shakur alone! I havent heard any recent mention of these people (who are black) from Mr. Jackson, I could be mistaken but that is my point.

In conclusion, why is everyone soooo suprised about the racial tension in this country? It has not gone anywhere; just breeded in a different-more complex way. It has evolved in the families and friends of all who were tolerant of racism since the creation of this country. The day America is racism free, will be a bloody one.

Free the minds of the children through love, education, language and cultural arts; they are the future and we are past tense.

  • Thanks for covering this important issue.

There is something wrong with Jessie Jackson. If he isn’t the center of attention for the Black community he has his panties in a twist. I don’t think that Obama went to him before he announced that he was running for President. I don’t think that Obama has him in an advisory role.

Personally, I think that this is a good thing but I think that Jessie is pissed off because of it. Jesse doesn’t think that Obama has paid him the right amount of respect. So, this is his way of poking Obama. Obama is right to distance himself from Jackson. Main stream White America will run away from Obama if he turns to Jessie Jackson. I’m not sure that Obama can really speak out about the Jena 6 unless someone asks him. Obama can’t be seen as carrying a “Black” torch. He has to walk the tightrope. I think that he (Obama) is doing a great job walking it.

  • Jacksons only fault was being missed by the bullet that Ray allegedly shot Dr King with.
And Sharptons only fault is that he was not imprisoned with Marion Barry.
These are the only voices left to ostensibly carry out what King was trying to accomplish?
    Oh please.
This pair has (and will continue to do) taken anything King did back 20 years.
You want racism? You want these two to speak for what YOUR race wants?
Keep walking backwards, your problem is obvious to everyone but you.

  • first of all 1) obama is not “black” , he’s a mixed “race”. african and most african american(but not all) are real “black” people.

    2) jackson is an idiot. nuff said. i mean really..”acting black” is this guy serious??

this is stereotyping at is finest,if you ask me.

do chinese american “act chinese??” and all of them know kung fu as well??
    of course not.

in the end of the day, jackson, we are all american to the rest of the world eyes.
shame on you. is people like you thats is turning the “united states of america” into the “disunited states of america”.

  • As a concerned white citizen from Louisiana, I am insulted by Rev. Jackson’s remarks about Sen. Obama, as I infer from what he said that he believes white people are not concerned about the events in Jena, which is preposterous. My husband is African-American and we are both baffled by statements about being “black” or “white” enough. It is time to quit splitting citizens of this country by race. Senator Obama is running for President of the United States, and the President represents all Americans no matter what their race or ethnicity.

As an aside, I attempted to find Rev. Jackson’s email in order to comment to him and after a thorough search could not find one anywhere. My husband even paid for a search with no luck. You’d think the Reverend would be more accessible.

  • The problem with race is very complicated these days. African Americans commit over 50% of the violent crime in this country. Read up on black violence worldwide and you can connect the dots. South Africa has the highest rape and assault rate per capita in the world and is 90% black. It’s awefully difficult to not be a race realist.

  • I think that Reverend Jackson himself is a model for what “acting black” is. First, you need to identify yourself as black even though that is obvious. Then you need to distinguish black from white and indicate that they are in opposition to each other. You exonerate blacks from any responsibility for their individuals situations and declare they suffer because they are victims of whites. After that, you make demands on the white group that they provide favors for the black group.

You also create a niche for yourself so that you can enrich yourself at the expense of whites by declaring that you and yours are the conduits for white payments and concessions to blacks. It can be beer franchises, or any of the multitude of other benefits that have accrued to you to deter you from making suggestions that you will raise the ire of blacks against particular businesses unless they channel benefits through you, or act against politicians who want black votes unless they provide support for your organizations.. Much of those benefits seem to stay with you and yours personally. After all, you can’t help everyone, so you’ve got to help yourself. Remarkable.

Rev. Jackson has particular aptitudes and has used them to cut out a place, a piece of the pie for himself. He allegedly suffers from a learning defect and so has great difficulty with written reports. Nevertheless he possesses manipulative skills which he honed when he was matriculating at college, allegedly being graduated without having the requisitie abilities. Rev. Jackson is an overachiever and must be respected for his achievements and utilizing of the skill set that he does possess to such advantage, not only the fame, but the money. He identified opportunity and pursued it by aggressively and without reservation, even self-selecting himself as a successor to Dr. King.

Rev. Jackson does have a routine in which he agitates blacks by describing actions in terms of “injustice,” seemingly regardless of the validity of the claims. Situations are defined as unjust. Then he uses the PR for self-aggrandizement.

But Rev. Jackson is destined to be an emeritus agitator and race-hustler. His antics spawned an inferior imitation, the race-baiting and race-hustiling buffoon, Rev. Al Sharpton of Tawana Brawley fame, a contrived situation that was based on false allegations. Rev. Sharpton also encouraged violence against whites. He is a person who took a few college level classes, but education was not his forte. He works with a bullhorn and has encouraged riots, where non-black people were victimized and even killed. But, that’s our Al. And the black community as a whole has not repudiated him, embarrasment that he is. Blacks, however, are to be excused in this matter, as Rev. Sharpton is largely a creation of he white media (as is Rev. Jackson).

Oh well, political engagement is amusing. It seems that the Reverend Jackson may fear losing his constituency to a far more polished Mr. Obama. So, the attacks are unleased. Is there any other politician that might have an agenda that would benefit from denigrating Mr. Obama? Hmm.

  • Jackson’s Possible Motive:

He knows Hillary’s got it in the bag.

He’s already made points with his black constituency by endorsing Obama.

What better way to get back in Hillary’s good graces than to inflict the most possible damage on Obama in the black community than to accuse him of acting like white. This comment also plays with progressives.

    What Jackson accomplishes:

    1. Hillary owes.
    2. Obama can’t complain because Jackson’s endorsement of him is repeated.
    3. Jackson wins the continuing accolades of the blacks for standing up for them.
    4. One ups Sharpton.

  • Holy cow. What is it about doing a post on Obama that brings out the hooded freaks? I mean, these guys have to go around googling for any mention of Jackson so they can show up and spew this filth. They’re making me a Jesse Jackson supporter.

  • It’s “funny” (not really) how all those Triple-K Trolls (like True Patriot, @30) bring up the “black violence” and forget to mention that most — if not all — of it is black-on-black. So why is Tripple-K so exercised about it? I never could understand it. If you hate and fear blacks, you ought to be happy that they’re sparing you trouble, no? And you should make black abortions mandatory too, while you’re at it.

Gag. Read some Bob Herbert (now that he’s no longer behind NYT’s firewall), “patriots”. And spend 15 minutes a day exercising your brains, before they atrophy entirely, instead of parroting your leadership’s (Faux) talking points.

  • True Obs, Hillary definitely does not have the nom in the bag. Some recent polls actually show her losing in S. Carolina and Iowa and in deep trouble in New Hampshire. Maybe the fact that she’s a corporate butt-kisser and more idiotically warmongering than the Republicans has something to do with that. I know one thing, I’ll never cast a vote for her nor will anyone on my block despite the fact that we’re Democrats. If the Dems do nominate her, then we’ll be waiting around for 2012 and for an actual Progressive Dem to come along, rather than doing anything to support a Republican in Democrats’ clothing like Hillary. That’s how it is.

As for Obama– marvelous. Just amazing. He’s come on strong about the Jena Six and other civil rights issues recently.

  • The ironic part about all of this is that what needs to be done in Jena is what the Reverend Jackson was best at during the civil rights heyday: get the black vote out and change the social situation.

This is not an issue of whether or not an assault was committed or whether or not Jena has a significant race problem (we are talking about the part of LA that is in East TX, after all) but the behavior of elected officials. The (white) principal wanted the three rodeo cowboys expelled from school for hate speech but the school board nixed that. The local prosecutor added the attempted murder as an adult charge, but the judge(s) changed that too. All the actors, with the exception of the six accused, were white.

That part of LA is still like the Mississippi of the ’60s. Rural, poor education of blacks (and whites), poverty, and an adherence to a particularly Louisiana type of racism which has always been more virulent than the rest of the South and for the most part ignored by all. (LA was never the focus of the civil rights movement the way MS and AL were, and it shows.) While in MS a similar county may have a black sheriff, I doubt that the black voters in Jena are organized enough to have an effect on what happens politically or socially. Even if they are a distinct numerical minority, organization will have a positive effect which is one of the great legacies of the civil rights movement.

Will Reverend Jackson or Reverend Sharpton come down and teach the locals how to effectively organize? I doubt it. I suspect what will happen is that there will be a newsworthy parade, a lot of sound bites from the fringes and no attempt at reconciliation or organization. In a case like this, the poor black population will be left holding the bag and there will be little change in the social system.

The elements for change are all there: an easily understood crisis that has almost been resolved in a fair manner (following a little pressure from other sources), a long legacy in the South for shifting attitudes and whites ready and able to effect changes at certain levels of power such as the judges who made the right decisions and the principal of the school. (And a winning football team, don’t think this is not important.) If these forces can be mobilized, plenty of good will can eventually come out of this.

Right now there is polarization that is historic and will be made worse by a “love ’em and leave ’em” approach by Reverends Jackson and Sharpton. This is an opportunity for someone like the governor to come in and set positive action in motion. In addition, it would help greatly if local leaders spoke up in a way that does not sound defensive.

I don’t think that a media circus will help that effort at all.

  • I would add that he should not only give Obama an apology, but white people as well. His words convey a sense that it is bad to be white. Racist remarks are racist remarks no matter who they are directed toward. If the roles were reversed and a notable white figure stated someone was acting black, there would be outrage (much coming from Jackson himself). This type of stereotyping should disgust us all.

  • jeez carpetbagger commentariat, you can’t all be ignorant about this..whats going on?

blacks ‘acting white’ are blacks that look down on other blacks. the trustee phenomenon if youw ill.

  • I think that Rev. Jackson should lay off on Obama. He obviously cant please everyone, but it seems like he is trying. Obama did address the Jena 6 situation even though he may not have stressed the importance of the issue enough. He shouldn’t be criticized for trying to appeal to the white vote and just for the record he is still black.

  • Well for one I’m black and I cant stand Jesse Jackson. He’s the biggest racist there has ever been. I dont get what it means to act white but I’ve been told I act white because I dont like rap, I dont watch BET, I talk proper, I dont live in the ghetto, etc well if that makes me white so be it then because if someone can tell me that, that means their ignorant. Theres no definition of what being black is and what being white is so Jesse Jackson is ignorant and just trying to get publicity to be on TV. I feel bad for Jena 6 but I guess since I dont protest over them I guess I’m acting white. Its probally more white people protesting for Jena 6 then black people, so what is Jesse Jackson going to do, get mad and say well their acting black. He gets mad when white people dont help but a comment like what he said about Obama is racist and if I was white I’ll never help because he’s basically saying that Obama is not helping Jena 6 so he’s acting white so I guess that means since that what he thinks, white people should prove him right?

  • I would just like to point out how racist Jesse Jackson is saying someone is “acting white”. As a “white person” I find it insulting to stereotype someone to get on the news. Shame on Jesse Jackson. Why we give this adulter who already insulted Japanese people with his earlier statements news coverage I will never know.
