Immigration policy drives GOP presidential hopefuls over the edge

Mike Huckabee used to be fairly reasonable on immigration. He supported in-state college tuition for children of illegal immigrants and opposed an immigration raid of a poultry plant that led to the deportation of illegal immigrants. More recently, he endorsed Bush’s immigration policy, denounced in right-wing circles as “amnesty.” Huckabee insisted that he supports measures that “provide[s] a path for workers to become legal,” and denounced conservative critics of immigration reform, condemning them for being “driven by racism or nativism.”

But that was before Huckabee was a leading contender for the Republican presidential nomination. Now he’s teaming up with the Minuteman Project, denounced as “vigilantes” by the president just two years ago.

Mike Huckabee, under fire for some of his immigration stands while governor of Arkansas, picked up an endorsement in Council Bluffs, Iowa, from the ultimate illegal immigration opponent: Jim Gilchrist, founder of the Minuteman Project, the group that has roamed the border for the last several years operating effectively as an independent border patrol. […]

“Frankly, Jim I’ve got to tell you there were times in the early days of the Minutemen I thought what are these guys doing, what are they about,” Huckabee said. “I confess I owe you an apology.”

As if that weren’t quite embarrassing enough, Gilchrist praised Huckabee’s new hyper-conservative immigration policy with the highest possible praise: “It was a plan I myself could have written.”

Got that? A Republican who was perceived as an amnesty-embracing apostate up until very recently has an immigration policy that the Minuteman Project not only likes, but could have crafted itself.

The policy is, on its face, silly: within four months, a Huckabee administration will get 12 million people who entered the United States illegally to go home, en masse. If Huckabee were capable of shame, now would be a good time for it.

But as the WaPo’s editorial board noted today, the absurd proposal speaks to a larger problem.

[T]he rhetorical excess that has accompanied the proposals, and the suggestions that millions of people might be expelled or hounded from the country, not only respond to popular disquiet; they also whip it up. According to the latest FBI statistics, from 2006, hate crimes against Hispanics had increased by more than a third since 2003.

America has had its paroxysms of anti-immigrant fervor in the past, also accompanied by spasms of violence and persecution. Today, as in the past, the national atmosphere is subverting the discussion, drowning out reason. Look at the uproar that overwhelmed New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s sensible, safety-minded proposal to make illegal immigrants eligible for driver’s licenses, and you will see logic defeated by posturing, political cowardice and the poisonous diatribes of talk radio. Sen. John McCain, the Arizona Republican who championed comprehensive reform, is now chastened by the ferocity of the demagogues who mischaracterized it as an “amnesty”; he says he “got the message” and will now speak only of enforcement in the near term. In such an ugly environment, the best one can hope for is candidates who can appeal to the nation’s self-interest as well as its better instincts; who can explain that resolving the immigration mess through a comprehensive approach is not only an economic imperative but also the only realistic way out of a political swamp.

And yet, at least in the short term, there are no consequences for stupidity. Indeed, Huckabee’s ridiculous policy barely registers as odd in Republican circles, because it tells them what they want to hear.

The GOP is going to have to lose a few election cycles, I suspect, before all of this sets in.

Flip-flopping does not matter among the Regressives – as long as the “flop” part means appealing to the worst basest instincts of the stupidest voters…

  • Sorry people, there’s a lot of Democrats who also think illegal immigration has gotten way out of control in quite a few ways. And if the borders are not enforced soon, they will be opened up wide by the political clout of those who made it in. What we’re seeing is nothing less than an invasion, and it’s being done for a number of obvious economic and political reasons. Democrats are trying to suck up to a growing political bloc, and they are ignoring the people who have lived here all their lives. These people are seeing the full effects of unrestricted illegal immigration, but of course the pundits don’t see it yet, and therefore can’t understand the polling data other than to call us all “racists”. But the problem isn’t racism, it’s the negative economic and political changes being forced on us:

    1) Wage pressure: Down. Try getting a lower-end job when illegal immigrants will do it for half your normal wage. I know it’s PC to say this isn’t happening, but it does and most people know it. I was real glad to hear Barak Obama simply and forthrightly say this is indeed happening.

    2) Home values: Down. Try selling your house for a decent price after a dozen illegal aliens rent a house on your street. Maybe it hasn’t happened to you in your neighborhood, but it happens every day at the bottom of the economic ladder.

    3) Political power: Down. The hispanic voter bloc is growing rapidly, and it has its own agenda. That agenda involves legalizing millions of their friends and reletives. Some of them call it “Reconquista”, and actually say the white people should go back to europe, most of them oppose meaningful border control. And the trend is very clear: The more illegals get legalized, the more this bloc wants the door opened even wider. Once they have sufficient political power, they will exercise it. And make no mistake, they see border enforcement as a BAD thing.

    http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/news/politics/blog/2007/12/poll_hispanics_oppose_crackdow.html

“…over half of all Hispanic adults in the U.S. worry that they, a family member or a close friend could be deported

    …Three quarters (75%) disapprove of workplace raids…

…Hispanics generally see illegal immigrants as a plus …”

And let’s be clear about one thing: If you look at the polls of Americans in general, you will see that it’s not racism driving this issue, it’s economics and politics.

    http://www.earthtimes.org/articles/show/news_press_release,241431.shtml

Support for enforcement of U.S. immigration laws is an issue that unites Iowans of all political persuasions… 84 percent of Iowa Republicans and 60 percent of Democrats support “tighten[ing] border security, while increasing enforcement actions against employers who hire illegal immigrants in an effort to convince illegal immigrants to return home.”

Sure, racism is a factor, and it needs to be held in contempt, but it should not be used as a shield by people who seek to undermine the rule of law, and the economics of massive illegal immigration can be only be ignored at our own risk. Do you want to lose elections? Then ignore this:

Asked whether U.S. policy on the issue should focus on integrating illegal immigrants into American society or stricter enforcement of anti-immigration laws, there was little difference in the three states.

On average, 70 percent favored stronger enforcement while 21 percent favored integrating illegal immigrants into American society.

  • The only way to stop illegal immigration is to go after those who hire them. Most illegals are like those who worked for Romney – they get hired by a contractor who makes a fortune by paying the illegals pennies and charging clients big bucks. Charge these contractors – whether it’s for yard work, construction or prostitution – and make them serve jail time. Cheap labor is the current crack cocaine.

  • ***Racer-X***spreading fear and panic is easy….Watch.

There is an invasion of illegal black Africans infiltrating the country, taking our jobs, driving housing prices down…If it hasn’t happened in your neighborhood yet wait until a few illegal blacks have rented a few houses and watch the values go down. You can get a black man to work for half of the wage you or I would work for… They are filling our prisons driving our taxes up to care for them…and wielding political power as democrats are catering to their political block to garner votes.

Over half of all blacks living in the country fear one of their family members will be jailed (deporting them has become too difficult). They want to bring millions of their friends and relatives over here from Africa to join with relatives that were removed against their will years ago. They actually go so far as to say most of the south belongs to them since their labor built it….

Get the point. Your logic is based on assumptions and innuendo If 2 people say it or think it doesn’t mean millions do. Illegal aliens are Illegally here and will be deported if turned in. Employers of illegal aliens will be penalized and fined and we should have stricter laws for these employers. But you make it sound like if we look west we will see torches reflected in the sky as millions are coming to take over America. We need deliberative, rational, thoughtful action to deal with this issue not fear and panic.

We do not want the “Great Wall of China”, we do want a change in our trade agreements with Mexico. We need to make it important for the Mexican side of the border to have an interest in preventing it’s citizens from crossing illegally. We do want to encourage legal means to citizenship and discourage being here illegaly. Perhaps deporting families here legally if found to be harboring illegal aliens. Perhaps confiscating the property and assets of any family harboring illegal aliens and take away business licenses of employers employing illegals.

It’s always dangerous to assume motivations behind behavior. You assume dems see political advantage by protecting illegals but there is no proof of this. You assume what millions of Aliens are thinking or feeling or what their motivations are like sending us back to Europe etc. This is a biased attitude and doesn’t help deal with the issue by generating fear and contempt for those involved. It demonstrates frustration and anger and no matter how justified it isn’t a constructive means of dealing with the issue.

If only the Mexican catholics believed in birth control perhaps Mexico would have less poor citizens wanting to enter our country…ya think? Perhaps we should focus on getting rid of the priests of overpopulation and poverty. Get down to the seeds of the problem..eh?

How about we hire all the illegal aliens for a security army…oh wait, that’s Blackwater.

How about…no place to go, no place to live, no place to work, no health care, no security oh wait…that’s Mexico…our trade partner. You don’t see millions of Americans flooding into Mexico to live. Maybe we should help straighten Mexico’s economy out…it would probably cost us less than dealing with illegal immigration. It might eve help both our countries economy. Go figure.

  • ***RacerX*** didn’t mean to imply you are wrong…most of your comment is excellent I just disagree with some of the ‘assumptions’ you have about the motivations of those involved with this issue. I don’t hate illegal aliens just don’t want them here illegally. I don’t think they have any great designs on America beyond making a living for themselves and their families. They should be able to do that in their own country…that’s the shame of it.
    Anyway…great post. Thanks.

  • Waitamminit – Democrats agree that immigration needs reform and border security is a major component – but we’re talking about the fricking MINUTEMEN here…

The border patrol themselves has said “could cause more trouble than they prevent”: http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=518953&CMP=OTC-RSSFeeds0312

They also spawned imitators who carried firearms on patrol…: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/03/30/national/main684121.shtml

Vigilante justice is un-American and the fact that Huckabee supports them is a shame…

  • And by the way integration into society has never been a problem – the poll question is deliberately framed as if integration is in doubt – every generation of immigrants have integrated in 2 or 3 generations after entering the country. The illegal immigration issue is wholly separate from the integration piece.

  • I love how critical thinking shuts down on this issue. bjbotts talks about “illegal black Africans” in #5, then says a bunch of things that make a LOT of sense like “I don’t think they have any great designs on America beyond making a living for themselves and their families. They should be able to do that in their own country” I totally agree, and you’re right about birth control and getting the Mexican economy to perform better.

I don’t hate illegal aliens, but I do hate what illegal immigration is doing to the city/state I live in. I know they’re only here to work, but a billion other people would love to be able to waltz in here and work, too. Do we want that? Yes!!! But only in a controlled fashion, and that is not what’s currently happening. Right now we have a major voting bloc trying to kick the door to Mexico wide open. And surprise surprise, 70% of America thinks that’s a bad idea.

Many Democrats apparently can’t hear one word 70% of America is saying, they think we’re all “scared of Reconquista”. As an educated professional I’m probably never going to have to compete with illegal aliens for work, and they’re not killing the property value in my neighborhood (yet). But I can see what they’re doing to millions of other Americans, and I can understand how that would make me feel. Apparently I’m only supposed to feel sorry for the illegal aliens who only come here to work, not the people here who have to compete with folks who are used to making $7,000 / YEAR.

Here’s what we need to do: enforce US laws against hiring illegal aliens, and force Mexico to get with the program and allow its people to unionize. If they can’t unionize, why the hell should we agree to let them access our markets?

All I see is a bunch of Democrats who are scared shitless of pissing off hispanic voters, who in general (as I pointed out in #2) have little regard for US immigration law. They want their friends and relatives to be able to come here too, and to hell with border enforcement. They see illegal immigration as a “plus”. Of course the Republicans love to exploit this and at the same time do nothing about it because they love cheap un-unionized labor. But just because a Republican says something doesn’t mean it’s wrong, and anyone who thinks that way is an idiot.

I don’t watch Lou Dobbs, but I guess if he ever says the sky is blue, Ohioan will tell us it’s green. Political Correctness is like fundamentalism, it can make you look really silly, and it can cost you elections. Don’t argue with me, Ohioan, argue with the millions of Americans who think this is an issue.

  • But RacerX – keeping Mexico union-free is part and parcel to the Republican platform.

They don’t intend to do anything about it aside from spread hate.

Reconquista? For a hundred years we deported hispanic-americans from the states – ones born in the US, it’s territories, and lands that the US appropriated… And for a hundred more years we ignored the areas in which they were a majority until they weren’t, anymore.

    Learn some history.

Deportation? Why is it that people born here, immigrated here, working here, paying taxes here, grew up here – they can’t have their grandparents or parents or children visit them here in the US? Isn’t that a bit unfair? That they can’t opt to take care of their relatives in the US instead of outside the US?

How does this disparity help us?

For half a century, the world has sent its children to our facilities of higher learning. All this immigration and security crackdowns has shut that down.

…And yet, American companies are collaborating against workers asking for a one cent raise.

We shouldn’t be talking about immigration at all, as that isn’t the economic issue.

  • I think a fence along the Rio Grande is a good idea. Then there should be a fence around the rest of Texas, and the idiocy that comes from there will be contained.

  • Here is a great site for updated information on Huckabee and his sidekick Gilchrist, their newest lie’s and deceit on the American People. check it out!
Is this what we need more of in the Peoples house, I certainly don’t think so.
    http://www.alipac.us/index.php

  • Thanks SOSADFORUS I just checked out http://www.alipac.us and it packed with information on illegal immigration as well as the Huckabee /Gilchrist fiasco! Amercans are SICK of being lied to by power hungry politicians and the mainstream media! We need answers and the truth!!!!!
