Hagee’s context doesn’t help

I would have been more than content to avoid further comment on John McCain’s outreach and embrace of anti-Catholic, anti-gay, anti-Muslim, anti-woman, and anti-Semitic televangelist John Hagee. The media collectively decided to give McCain a pass, the senator made a half-hearted effort to distance himself from some of Hagee’s comments, and McCain critics had no choice but to give up on making this an important part of the campaign.

But before we can move on in earnest, McCain’s latest explanation for his relationship really deserves a closer look.

McCain appeared on Bill Bennett’s nationally syndicated radio show yesterday morning, and the Hagee controversy came up. ThinkProgress has the audio clip; here’s the transcript of the relevant portion:

BENNETT: I’ve got to ask you about something, as a Catholic. This was something a lot of Catholics were talking about. A couple of weeks ago, senator, you received the endorsement of San Antonio Pastor John Hagee. He’s written about my church, “there’s a clear record of history linking Adolf Hitler and the Roman Catholic church in a conspiracy to exterminate the Jews.” He’s called the Catholic church “a great prostitute,” except he used a stronger word. He’s called my church a “cult.” Your comment on this. There’s actually been a lot of talk about it.

MCCAIN: Well, obviously I repudiate any comments that are anti-Semitic or anti-Catholic, racist, any other. And I condemn them and I condemn those words that Pastor Hagee apparently…that Pastor Hagee wrote. I will say that he said that his words were taken out of context, he defends his position. I hope that maybe you’d give him a chance to respond. He says he has never been anti-Catholic, but I repudiate the words that create that impression. I will say, I’d like to say on his behalf, he’s been a very strong supporter of the state of Israel and when we were doing the No Surrender tour, he came and spoke on behalf of not surrendering in Iraq.

Bennett, who is Catholic, seemed completely satisfied with McCain’s answer. I haven’t the foggiest idea why.

Let’s put aside the “create that impression” nonsense; it’s a silly and transparent dodge. Instead, let’s focus on the good part: “Out of context“? Hagee has called the Roman Catholic Church “the Great Whore,” the “apostate church,” the “anti-Christ,” and “a false cult system” that inspired Adolf Hitler to initiate the Holocaust. McCain thinks there may be a reasonable context for this?

Hagee has argued that God is going to use Muslim terrorists to create “bloodbaths” in our streets to punish us for our sinful policies toward Israel. I’ve seen the context; it doesn’t help.

Hagee has argued that Hurricane Katrina “was, in fact, the judgment of God against the city of New Orleans” for hosting a gay-pride parade. I’ve seen the context; it doesn’t help here, either.

Hagee has smeared Jews (he thinks they’re responsible for their own oppression), Muslims (he thinks they’re all inherently dangerous), women, “Harry Potter” novels, and pretty much anyone who doesn’t look and think like exactly like him. Context is never exculpatory; it’s always even more damning.

McCain, who clearly doesn’t have the foggiest idea what he’s talking about, is not only willing to dismiss Hagee’s outrageous attacks on almost everyone based on some imaginary “context,” he’s willing to rationalize his embrace of this nut because the radical televangelist agrees with him on Iraq policy.

I keep hearing rumors that McCain is supposed to be a great campaigner. I’m still waiting for evidence to bolster the conventional wisdom.

Not a clue how it could be out of context.

Unless that context is that it’s a negative assertion at all. Some Christians seem to think that any ol’ thing they say is just fine and dandy, if they believe it’s the right thing. Even if it’s a really hateful thing to say…

  • He’s great in the eyes of the corporate whores who call themselves the press but are bought and paid for with BBQs and chicken dinners.

No matter what he does, he gets a pass. I don’t expect it will get any better from now until election day.

If we actually manage to win this election, it will be a miracle. The press is a very powerful tool and it is a wholly owned subsidiary of the repugnacants. GOOP radio, teeeveee and print. Step right up, folks!

  • c’mon steve, you know why bennett was satisfied: mccain is the republican nominee. by definition, bennett is satisfied with his response to anything.

  • What howard said.

Bennett just wanted some attention, and now he’ll get back in line. He’ll hold hands with Hagee before he’ll help the Democrats.

  • The “taken out of context” is a dodge. An easy way to cover your ass and move on to another topic.

The question that should be asked right after someone makes the statement that what they said was taken out of context is, Then why did you say it if you did not mean it?

  • If he can’t get the fundy vote, I think he knows he’s screwed. But he has to also avoid alienating Catholics. It’s all about numbers. McCain is trying to thread the needle and doing a piss poor job of it. His answer may get a pass from Bennett, but it should be obvious that Bennet doesn’t speak for all Catholics.

  • on the suggestion of a commenter here, i’m putting spanish subtitles on the TPM vid. should be ready soon. ¡si se puede!

  • Howard & Racer X have it right, McCain is Republican’t, so Bennett “can’t” do anything to hold him responsible.
But I’d say that Bennett would cruise for alter boys and take Hagee along if it would help the Retard party.

  • And where is our independent watchdog press? Shouldn’t it be, I don’t know, a story that McCain has sought, gained and defended a political relationship with a man who believes rapture is imminent, and that McCain’s policies will ensure that it comes to pass? Really, any member of the political press corps worth his or her salt should be hounding McCain about this, not eating chicken and ribs at his ranch.

  • Here’s a fun experiment.

    1. Walk up to any female in your office and call her a whore.*

    2. Explain the context of your remarks to Human Resources in a way that doesn’t result in being fired.

    Good luck!

*Experiment might not work if you are employed by Spitzer’s favourite business.

  • All they have to do is get Hagee’s many public ravings and put them on TV and radio and ask “Do you want this guy giving the next president advice on anything?” And then run McCain’s answer to Bennett.

God, even Little Georgie wouldn’t have been this dumb.

And, BTW, Hagee is not that well-respected in the evangelical right – even they consider him “too extreme.” But ol’ Johnny McSame doesn’t know enough about religion to know that. Among the many other things he knows nothing about.

  • If McCain wanted to support of the Christian Right, going to the guy who the others think (at least behind his back) is an idiot is a clear demonstration of his ability and judgement. And now that he’s in bed withn the guy he can’t get out. If the press won’t look at this, we need to keep hitting them over the head with it till they do. Goddamned morons.

  • RE: 11

Expose Hagee’s poison? It’s all out there on You Tube to spread around to all your email contacts. I wouldn’t hold your breath counting on the media to hammer it home.

  • What context could possibly justify Hagee’s hate speech? Still, I am waiting for someone to ask the good reverand if perhaps the punishment could be for the sins of torture and slaughter, since these would be the real McCoys of carnal sin.

  • The fact that there is no “context” in which these sentiments would be mitigated, let alone justified, is missing the larger point that Hon. Sen. McCain probably hasn’t the littlest idea what context the comments were in in the first place. The very next line should have been one explaining this alleged context. Since none was forthcoming, one can be safe in assuming that the endorsement was one of simple political calculation. Sen. McCain couldn’t have been ‘honored’ by it even if one agrees that such honor is appropriate, because he has no idea what Hagee’s beliefs are, only that standing next to him will help his campaign.

  • Bennett, who is Catholic, seemed completely satisfied with McCain’s answer. I haven’t the foggiest idea why.

Because Bennett is a Republican Catholic, and they normally know the score. The rest of the “Christians” among the Religious Right hate their guts. And the feeling is mutual, for the most part. The only reason these people are allies is because they all have this desire to pull the country back in time to the days of their youth when life was like a Leave it to Beaver sitcom – the wimmin were in the kitchen, the men went to work, and the black people didn’t appear in their neighborhoods. (The ones too young to actually have grown up during the “Leave it to Beaver” days of our country are just assured that that was the way the world was and everyone was better off for it. And since it seems to be in our “monkey nature” to believe that there was some kind of “Golden Age” in our past where things were better than they are now, they fall for it.).

Republican Catholics have long had to justify their allegiances to the raving loon wing of the Religious Right – and, in turn, the raving loon wing of the Religious Right has had to justify their allegiances to a group of people they consider to be as bad as Satanists or almost as bad as “secular humanists”. This is nothing new.

The one surprising bit in this story is that Bill Donohue decided to break the silence and scream about it. THAT interests me – he must really hate McCain. But other conservative Catholics rallying round McCain and looking for any excuse to push Hagee off the radar? Not surprising at all.

  • I’ve been saying repeatedly that Hagee’s claims that other religions are bad (cult, whore, etc.) isn’t the same as hating those people that hold the faiths, but considering how steadfastly this blog holds that Hagee IS anti-Jew (not anti-Judaism), anti-Catholic, (not anti-Catholicism) and anti-Muslim (rather than anti-Islam.)

It matters because this is a guy who considers it his job to persuade others to join his faith. It’s not surprising if criticism of other faiths is part of that job. That will displease members of those faiths, but I don’t consider it bigotry.

Someone needs to pass along the URLs of clips that support the point that Hagee hates people, not what he considers “false faiths”. I want to see them. Really.

That said, it seems unwise for McCain to embrace such an inflammatory figure even if he isn’t a bigot. It suggests McCain considers all faiths but protestantism to be cults; not an impression I would think helpful in garnering a majority.
