Huckabee to follow in Robertson’s footsteps?

In 1988, TV preacher Pat Robertson launched a Republican presidential campaign predicated on a vaguely theocratic, right-wing platform. He actually fared well in a couple of contests — he even came in second in the Iowa caucuses, ahead of George H.W. Bush — before a poor showing on Super Tuesday forced him from the race.

But Robertson didn’t just seek votes on the campaign trail; he collected names and addresses. Indeed, before he even launched his campaign, he told his supporters that he’d only run if 3 million people signed on as campaign volunteers.

This, of course, created quite a voter list of conservative evangelicals, which Robertson used to create the Christian Coalition a year after ending his presidential bid.

Robertson has since become a laughingstock, and the Christian Coalition barely exists, but by using his campaign lists, Robertson was able to create a political powerhouse.

I get the sense Mike Huckabee has the same idea.

Mike Huckabee will hold a conference call with supporters tomorrow night to discuss his plans for a new political entity and to assure them that he plans to keep an active presence in this campaign and in future cycles, according to an aide. […]

“You will hear insider information about Huckabee’s scrappy campaign that surprised the nation and stunned Republican Party elites,” promises [Christian publisher and Huckabee backer Steve Strang] in an email to Huckabee backers. “The ‘preacher who dared to be president’ will also discuss his plans for the future and reflect on the changing state of the conservative movement.”

Huckabee won’t formally launch his new political organization until next week — think tax day, April 15th — but he’ll use the call to begin to develop what his supporters hope ultimately becomes a high-profile role in Christian conservative politics that will enable him to run again for president.

Jerry Falwell died last year; James Dobson isn’t as active as he was; and Robertson is generally perceived as a clown, leaving a vacancy among religious right leaders. Why not Huckabee?

He’s already won over the faithful, he has a background as a Baptist preacher, and he probably cultivated some fairly impressive voter lists during his campaign.

There’s been quite a bit of talk in recent months about whether the religious right, as a movement, is dead. I can see the argument from both sides, but the bottom line for me is that the rank-and-file people who make up the religious right — the ones who watch the 700 Club, listen to Dobson’s radio show, etc. — haven’t gone away. The Christian Coalition has faded, and some of the lesser-known groups haven’t grown in stature or size, but the group’s members are still out there, believing in a right-wing theocratic agenda.

Huckabee, who probably recognizes this, may intend to stand in the gap (so to speak) and be a Pat Robertson for a new generation.

He’s even gone Hollywood.

Former Republican presidential contender Mike Huckabee has signed a contract with Creative Artists Agency in Los Angeles, daughter and senior advisor Sarah Huckabee tells CNN.

“Nothing has been decided,” the younger Huckabee says of future projects, “[it] probably won’t be just one thing but maybe several different things. Just exploring options right now.”

I have a hunch we’ll be hearing quite a bit from Huckabee in the coming months.

Please, Mike. Do this.

  • This has the potential (at least for this election cycle) to be a good thing. Lots of GOP voters reminded that McSame was not their choice will do wonders for party unity, and I think that this has the potential to be a bigger issue for the goopers than for the Dems, despite a longer, harder fought primary season. At some point Dems remember that we’re fighting over candidates that we generally like, while the goopers were fighting over people that they generally didn’t like.

  • I think we all need to write Mr Huckabee a nice letter asking him to stand up for American values and save the Republican party from the people who think it’s OK to hang out with pro-choice baby killers like Joe Lieberman.

Huckabee presents a huge opportunity for us. He (like Bob Barr) could be their Nader, even if he’s not in the race. He reminds them of the values that they chucked to get behind McCain, and that will be enough to keep a lot of them home on Nov 4th, thinking that their one vote won’t really hurt the Republicans anyway.

  • Part of Huckabee’s support comes from the FairTax (so-called) crowd. Of course, a national sales tax would throw our battered economy over the edge.

Those FairTax people scare me as much or more than the religious Right (some overlap exists). The last thing we need is a potentially-viable politico for them to rally behind.

  • Those FairTax people scare me… -Ronnoco

I totally agree. Anyone who supports the FairTax is advocating for the collapse of the United States economy and should be tried for treason. It’s one of the most despicable and destructive policies I have ever seen in my entire life.

  • Mike Huckabee has an excellent chance to be President some day. He has an outstanding record as Governor of Arkansas in addition to his religious credentials. He presents his views in a very pleasant manner and obviously cares about people on a personal level. He has great appeal as Republican for the miniority vote as he gained over 45% of that vote in Arkansas.
He could accomplish a lot for this country as President or even as Vice President. I didn’t know who he was a year ago but now support him.
I was disappointed with the social conservative leadership in D.C. Especially Tony Perkins, Gary Bauer and Pat Robinson. Dr. Dobson and Paul Weyrich did end up supporting Gov. Huckabee. Paul Weyrich showed himself to be a class act by humbly admitting he was wrong in not supporting Mike Huckabee earlier.

  • Rich Allen @7 –

I recognize that some aspects of Huckabee would make him an excellent politician. But I could never get over his statement that it would be easier to change the Constitution to match the word of the living God than to change the word of God to match the Constitution. The president swears an oath to uphold the Constitution, putting Huckabee in an interesting situation.

  • I was disappointed with the social conservative leadership in D.C. Especially Tony Perkins, Gary Bauer and Pat Robinson. -Rich Allen

Yeah, that Pat Robinson has been such a disappointment.

The Gap’s summer line this year was such a let down. Hello, stripes? That is soooo 2007.

I wonder what Johm McCain thinks about Robinson?

  • You know, in all honesty I really enjoyed Huck’s appearances on The Daily Show and Saturday Night Live. He’s genuinely funny with a terrific sense of comedic timing.

He would be an absolute nightmare as a political leader and should never, under any circumstances, be allowed to have any real power whatsoever.

But he could have an outstanding career as an entertainer in the mold of John Oliver and Aasif Mandvi. Think about it, Mike. Seriously. Think about it.

  • Huckabee should be a little more than just a religious leader. He should continue a message of big tent conservatism that values progress and values. He rang a true chord with a lot of people and me who disagree with him theologically and he should be cautious to keep his politic attitude in foavor of starting siginificant dialoghes on issues like tax reform and life. Conservatism needs a breath of fresh air and Huckabee is and excellent communicator as well as a wonderful human being who can be that leader that is needed.

And folks who say he should not be allowed near power because of his deep seeded personal beliefs on morality and faith, he was near power and it was not half bad as he reformed his state and brought it out of poverty. He proved that small government was good or the small people and for small business.

  • Also, the Consitiution=Word of God comment was sorely out of context and even Huckabee admited that. He got overboard as he often does when talking about his beliefs in the value of life.

And he denied commutation to Wayne Dummond four times, Clinton appointed lackeys paroled him and Huckabee could not do anything about it if he wanted. Though I think him and many other thought that the castration of Dumond was terrible and prevented him from raping again. Crime went down dramatically with Huckabee as Governor by the way and many who would have been harmed by crime are safe today because of his strong leadership.

  • the fairtax would be a HUGE step forward for manufacturers. less, if no time spent on making the irs happy. $150 billion a YEAR america spends on that. exports? no tax on them. social security? how bout having the tourists and off the books workers helping out? having the check every month to kill taxes on everyone under the poverty line? there WOULD be a short fall in employment (think IRS) but a new crop of manufacturers would come along to give employment to the accountants displaced by that sector change. reforming health care, immigration, AND taxes WOULD bring america back. see you in 2012 mike. WE WILL **NEED** YOU.

  • I think it is foolish to underestimate Mike Huckabee. He is a charming person and though I am in strong disagreement with some of his policies, I recognise his basic integrity and morality. He wold have been a quantum leap better than Bush and even his screwed up tax ideas would not have done the damage that W has done with his war and borrow and spend policies. I think we are very lucky not to have to run against him.

  • If glenn’s grasp of economics is as complete as his grasp of syntax and witting, then I’d say he presents a compelling case against the deceptive and treasonous FairTax.

  • I heard Huckabee was going to follow Robertson’s footsteps, but then it turned out they were Jesus’s footsteps and He’d been carrying Robertson all along.

  • Huckabee is going to be the candidate to cross party lines and bring unity to this country and take us up vertically. He stuck to his word 100% throughout his campaign and grew a tremendous grassroots. He convinced all the conservative leaders that he is, indeed the man. His appeal has far surpassed evangelicals and conservatives, but in fact, Huckabee appeals to EVERYONE who wants a president who cares more about principles and people than playing the political game. A president who would rather lose an election than lose the principles that got him into polictics in the first place. A president with over a decade of executive experience, ready on day one to lead the country and a NEW kind of Repbulican, as concerned with Main St. as Wall St.

  • The further I got into these comments, the more I got that Ron Paul thread feeling.

The how-dareya criticize the Man crowd are out in force!

Though, I must say the Huckabee-alls are very polite; and their grammar/typing skills appear stronger overall than the Paulsters.

  • RE: FAIR TAX CRITICS

“Those people who want to sail around the world scare me! Why, don’t they know that this is all there is!?! In fact, they are so ignorant, they will just fall off the edge because just like those religious zealots who believe the Bible which states the earth is a SPHERE, they do not understand the world is actually FLAT!!”

Ignorance is NOT bliss. To be critical of something that one OBVIOUSLY does not understand is nothing short of ingnorance.

The FAIR TAX, as opposed to the simple Consumption Tax, was developed by some of the TOP ECONOMISTS in the nation.

Not only would it WORK. It would actually be FAIR. It would actually raise MORE revenue. The average person would actually pay LESS.

Read about it before you are blindly critical of it.

True. The VERY rich who buy a lot more than those who make $0 to $250,000 would end up paying a little more. But the poor to the upper middle would pay less in a MUCH more simplified system. PLUS it would be IMPOSSIBLE to to NOT pay your taxes as some are able to do illegally now.

So unless you work for the IRS, are very rich, or are a criminal not paying ANY taxes right now…. THE FAIR TAX IS BETTER!!!

    http://www.fairtax.org

INVESTIGATE IT…. RESEARCH IT…. MAKE AN INFORMED OPINION…

  • John,

Do you own research…maybe not at http://www.fairtax.org. Try an unbiased source.

    http://online.wsj.com/article/SB118800635034508655.html

How about the Wall Street Journal. Or do you find the WSJ to be a financially inept bastion of liberal bias?

It is fair, all the way down to they shady way they figure the rate. American’s use exclusive, not inclusive rates. To report the rate as inclusive is done for one reason only: to obfuscate the truth.

I’ve done plenty of research on it, and if you’re buying that snake oil you’re not only naive, but a traitor.

  • It is fair… -doubtful

    LOL. It isn’t fair…

Unless you conclude the mutually assured destruction of the US economy is fair for everyone.

  • Fair Tax?

    Try this thought experiment.

You want to buy a boat. You go to the boat builder and he says “I can sell this $20,000 boat for you for $26,000 including tax”.

“Or I can sell this $10,000 boat that needs $10,000 of work to you for $13,000 and you can pay me $10,000 as income without tax”.

Is it not that obvious how this tax will be avoided by the rich?

Of course, unlike Income Taxes, which can’t possibly go beyond 100%, there is no upper limit on sales taxes. They can charge you ten times the manufacturer suggested retail price on an item and you just have to suck it up. So if the rich avoid paying the tax, they can just raise it.

Mike Huckabee isn’t a ‘Big Tent’ anything. He’s a conservative populalist, which is unnatural and thus tends to create inconsistencies.

  • Governor Huckabee is the closest I have ever seen in my life to that of the founding Fathers. If you want the Federal Government to continue to grow and take over your entire paychack, keep voting for those who support Nationalism. The Constitution is what the Governor has spoken of and it is very limiting to what power the Federal Government can control. Why is it when someone supports the Constitution, they are considered fringe?

As to the current tax system, it is an excise tax on all good produced in America and creates an unfair competition of foreign manufactures over our own. You want to keep that? The fair Tax is the only way we will be saved from the upcoming fiscal disaster from all the social programs going broke in a few years. “A heavy or progressive or graduated income tax is necessary for the proper development of Communism.” – Karl Marx

Governor Huckabee has a gift of getting to the truth. His input on the National Front will continue to flourish as a leader of We the People, to include all factions. Yes his Faith is very strong in foundation, but his attitude of inclusion reaches all of the populist and the majority of America is us common folk who do sit around a kitchen table trying to balance our kids conduct, the checkbook to cover crisis demands, freedom to be without the need of a license to do so.

If you have not studied Mike and his platforms or listened to him speak, take time to be open minded and not go by what someone has labeled Mike to be. You will be surprised.

As to the Paul supporters seeming to be hostel in wanting to get back to the roots of our founding Fathers, I would prefer revolution by the delegate process then the bloody way of history. You can thank the wisdom of the Founders for that. Please read the entire U.S. Constitution and the federalist papers too and see why it is important that we return to the fundamental law of the Constitution. It is not too late, yet! (close)

Governor Huckabee is gaining support from a lot of different quarters to includ ehte youth, Catholics, Lutherans, Methodists, all denominations and other Religions including Muslims, Judeons, Hindus. Mike’s support of fiscal overhaul has everyone supporting him including Atheists. Mike’s history as Governor has him recorded as a true conservative. Chekc him out.

  • Is it not that obvious how this tax will be avoided by the rich? -Lance

Or they’ll buy it on the burgeoning black market. Or they’ll buy it in a foreign country and find a way to import it duty free. There’s no such thing as a fair tax. The ultra rich will always find a way to get around it.

At least stick to a tax that’s not economy crippling in its mendacity.

The further I got into these comments, the more I got that Ron Paul thread feeling. -Mr DeBakey

I think you’ve completely nailed it here. The Huckabots are very similar to Paul’s supporters these days.

  • Wow, I see this blog has it’s own insane troll posse, too.

“And he denied commutation to Wayne Dummond four times”

Murray Waas, and the parole board members say you’re on dope:
“I signed the [parole] papers because the governor wanted Dumond paroled. I was thinking the governor was working for the best interests of the state.”
—Ermer Pondexter, ex-member of the board of pardons and paroles

“New sources, including an advisor to Gov. Mike Huckabee, have told the Arkansas Times that Huckabee and a senior member of his staff exerted behind-the-scenes influence to bring about the parole of rapist Wayne Dumond, who Missouri authorities say raped and killed a woman there shortly after his parole.”
    http://www.arktimes.com/Articles/ArticleViewer.aspx?ArticleID=154e1aad-fd18-4efd-8d80-b5dab8559419

  • With all due respect to Robertson, I don’t think he could fill Huckabee’s shoes. So I guess my vantage is point differs from the article.

I agree that we haven’t heard the last of Mike Huckabee.
As for the conservative movement diminishing? My, what ignorance. I am always surprised by this.

Another item the media wishes to sell (and there are a lot of uninformed buyers) is that Huckabee wants a theocracy. Another thing reported in ignorance. If being committed to the principles as outlined by the framers of the USC made America a theocracy, I’m surely not aware of it. Our founding fathers all recognized that there was a God, henceforth the wording of the Declaration of Independence, USC, and all of the states’ preambles. And America became great. Not due to a theocratic principle. I cannot imagine any American desiring a theocracy.

And the Fair Tax would be a darn sight better than what we currently have. Do the math. I’m one of those odd people that would do away with the Federal Reserve, well, although I’ve never of heard any politician, including Huckabee, clamoring to do this.

  • Re #27, there was this thing a while back called, you know, the Republican primary. Mike Huckabee talked a lot whle he was running. We listened, we considered, and we knew right away that this guy was very nice and totally unfit for office as far as governance and the Constitution were concerned.

And we have a very long memory.

  • Funny how all these Fair Tax critics here call the Fair Tax treasonous and economically crippling without explaining how it would even harm the economy, let alone destroy it. Their assertions are nothing more than that, assertions. As all of us who love debating know, mere assertions are non-sequiters. As for tax inclusive vs. tax exclusive reporting, how does it obscure the rate to quote the rate by the same measure as the system it seeks to replace? Or should we instead quote income taxes by their tax-exclusive rates? No, what obscures the rate is quoting a 23% revenue tax as a 30% tax, when it would replace the payroll and income tax systems which impose a marginal rate of roughly 22.65% tax inclusive on the average American worker.

  • Mr. Huckabee gave me much hope until he, against all good ,rubbed shoulders with Mr. used car salesman himself Copeland. The man and his show, with followers who think the moon shots are fake and he is real,is under indictment and Huckabee goes on TV with the shyster and accepts money???? Hello!!!
Maybe the Pat Robertson show is where he belongs. He can suck the last penny from every gullible person out there with the rest of the Seed Faith Lottery winners.

  • I’m an atheist, and even I don’t think it really makes sense that one would think ‘the word of god’ would be more flexible than ‘the constitution’. For one, the latter is called a ‘living document’ because we can change it. I think that’s part of the point.

The constitution wasn’t originally written with Women’s Vote or Emancipation, we had to put those in later – not that the framers didn’t think of those things, they just let us add them later.

Either way, I’m not sure exactly what Huck has in mind. The FairTax isn’t, and I know he got thrown out of the Republican party because he doesn’t believe in things like torture or racism… But where does he think he’s going to find people to support him?

Hey, if he can get any of the 80% of people who don’t vote to vote for him, I’ll help. Even if I don’t particularly like those people or their causes.

  • Andrew @32: Have you ever heard of a Regressive tax?

Have you looked at how much it cost to implement VAT in the EU?

They’re assertions, yes, but are they contradicted by any reality?

  • *** B R E A K I N G N E W S ***

Reliable sources say that on April 15th at exactly 12:00pm Mike Huckabee’s web site and John McCain’s web site will merge into one. This will be the official announcement that John McCain and Mike Huckabee are running on the same Republican ticket as President and Vice President of America.

The Gold star in the center of Mike Huckabee’s countdown timer is the same star John McCain uses. It is said McCain’s name will scroll to the top of the star and Huckabee’s name below the star to form the alliance.

Sources say McCain’s admiration of Huckabee’s Honor and Integrity sold him on the fact to choose Mike as his running mate. In the military, John McCain’s is the military, and Honor and Integrity are the most desireable character traits one can achieve.

In particular John McCain was impressed of Mike Huckabee honor and integrity during the primaries. Back in late December McCain and Huckabee formed an alliance against Romney to force him out of the race. McCain has lauded Huckabee as “a man of integrity, honesty, and decency.” And Huckabee has praised McCain as “a true, honest-to-God American hero.”

April 15th was choosen to symbolize the new alliance between McCain and Huckabee of taking on the Financial Recession which parallels to the Financial Tax due date in America.

Mike Huckabee is scheduled to be in NY city during this announcement on April 15th to again symbolize the Financial Recession and Wall Street Financial activity.

  • Re: 35
The VAT is regressive because it doesn’t have a prebate, whereas the Fair Tax does. Under the Fair Tax, every American household is entitled to a monthly prebate equal to the tax rate* the monthly poverty line, making it progressive to consumption, since the prebate is constant dollar and the tax is proportional at the margin. All savings (including debt repayment) is treated as if it were in a 401k- tax free until spent. The Fair Tax also eliminates the parasites on our economy- people who make their living off the tax code and off of investments that only make sense because of the tax code. If you work for a living, and spend less than 100 times the poverty line, give or take, you will do better under the Fair Tax than under the present system.

  • I hope this is true! Deep down I feel that Mike Huckabee and McCain will be a very strong force together. Huck will do much to support McCain and promote hope, optimism and unity here and abroad. God let it be.

  • I’m always amazed by the ‘Fair Tax’ crowd believing that it would eliminate the IRS.

The ‘Fair Tax’ would still be a tax. A tax which would require collection, enforcement and an old-fashioned bloated government bureaucracy to issue those monthly ‘pre-bate’ checks.

‘Fair Tax’ is Reaganomics on crack.

  • Fair Tax doubters…..I have lived in 3 different countries with the Fair Tax rule. They are all prospering well. The tax is the same whether you buy a pencil or a mercedes. Bottom line, if you can’t afford the Mercedes, don’t charge it!!, Don’t buy it. It helps keep people accountable for their OWN credit messes which they get into through undeciplined spending habits. And, businesses and governments cannot “hide” any wrongdoing through some “hidden” tax that only they and their cpa understand. Do your research….you may be surprised.

  • So we get all the Seed Faith Prosperity Preachers, put them in charge of deciding what tax is “fair”, we put Judge Judy in for their AccountabilityTsar, get Mike Huckabee to sit and chew the fat with them (in Dr. Phil fashion) just to show the world that he is human like the rest of us and can fall for a shyster like the rest of us, have a bass solo or two and call it a day. That’s my plan for America in the absence of someone to vote for. Kay, I suspect you are correct but I hope you are not all giddy about this country, steeped in special interests and crooked politics/politicians giving up their money pots too soon—like maybe next century, and then not without a fight. We have a huge integrity void in this country. It starts with me to take care of my own and then expect it of those I vote for and pay their salary.

  • For 17. doubtful: The Constitution of the United States, Art. III, defines treason against the United States to consist only in levying war against them, or in adhering to their enemies, giving them aid or comfort. Think Jane Fonda and those like her.

glenn(15) presented a few very brief examples (in his own words) of what he considers to be some of the better points of the FairTax. Why don’t you give us examples of the onerous points, in your own words, of the FairTax, instead of implying that its supporters are treasonous?

  • For 43. tomh5480: advocating the destruction of the US economy is an act of war against the US Government. Nothing Jane Fonda has ever done compares.

    You’re a traitor.

  • doubtful, you still haven’t given one shred of evidence to support your claim that the Fair Tax would destroy the US economy. You merely seek to strong-arm your opponents.

  • doubtful, I didn’t want to answer the Wall Street Journel article, because fairtax.org has already answered that charge, but I will answer it anyway.
    1. The WSJ article doesn’t want to consider the Fair Tax as it is proposed, but rather attack a straw man. The Fair Tax does not, will not, and cannot exempt any goods or services consumed by individuals, else it would cease to be the Fair Tax. If it is politically unviable, then alas, we will never have it. The point of the Fair Tax is to get rid of the ability of lobyists to influence the tax code, and the ability of Congress to give tax breaks to their friends. The prebate resolves any taxation on the poor.

    2. The oft quoted 22% imbeded tax figure won’t come entirely out of prices. It will be roughly evenly split between reduced prices and higher take home pay. Nevertheless, prices will not rise by 30% either, despite what the article alleges.

    3. Why should taxes be based on income, rather than spending? What business of mine is it how much money you earn? If you want to hoard money, that’s you’re right, but if you want to enjoy it, you (or your heirs) will have to spend it eventually. In the meantime, it will add to our capital stock and helps our economy grow. You benefit from your consumption, not your income.

    4. BTW, did you know that under the Fair Tax, “savings” includes education spending as well as debt repayments? The Income Tax punishes hard work and productivity, while encouraging indebtedness. The Fair Tax punishes living beyond your means and rewards handling your money responsibly.

    5. When you talk of progressivity, it is disingenuous not to mention that many wealthy people don’t work for a living, and capital gains and dividends are taxed at 15%, far less than labor income.

To all of you: if the situation was reversed, and we were a country with the Fair Tax debating whether or not to replace it with the system we now have, would any among you support doing so? If so, I would have to question your understanding of the system, or else figure you must be in somebody’s pocket, because the current system sucks all the way around.

  • About the Fair Tax.

When the French first built their underground subway, almost two hundred years ago, there were dozens and dozens criticisms by today’s standards. Many were absolutely hilarious. (We will desecrate all the tombs of the dead, for example.)
    Change for Parisians was threatening.

Change is always threatening. Think about this. 80 countries in the world today are using either a flat tax or taxation very close to Huckabee’s fair tax. It works in those countries, some of which were former Soviet Bloc countries.

If the fair tax is so suicidal, why aren’t are all those countries falling apart? The fact is that they are doing great.
