Rove engaged in more than just ‘chit chat’ with McCain campaign

For several weeks, a variety of political observers, most notably ThinkProgress’ Amanda Terkel and Matt Corley, have highlighted Karl Rove’s connections to John McCain’s campaign. And for several weeks, Bush’s former chief strategist — the man the president affectionately calls “Turd Blossom” — has been arguing that there really isn’t a relationship.

Just a couple of weeks ago, George Stephanopoulos identified Rove as an “informal adviser” to McCain before an ABC News interview. Rove denied it, and when Stephanopoulos suggested that Rove offers the McCain camp advice and information, Rove would only concede to “chit chat” with the Republican presidential campaign.

Not surprisingly, there appears to be a little more to the relationship. Peter Stone writes in National Journal:

“Generally speaking, Rove’s advice [for McCain] is action-oriented and useful,” said another senior consultant to the McCain camp. “It’s always well received.” This McCain adviser noted that Rove talks periodically to [McCain’s chief political strategist, Charlie Black] and a few other top campaign aides on several key matters.

“It can be policy ideas, messaging ideas, fundraising prospects, or people who need calls from someone in the campaign.” Rove is “part of the information network that the campaign has,” this adviser said, adding that Rove talks fairly regularly to such key people as Wayne Berman, a major fundraiser for McCain; Nicolle Wallace, a communications adviser; and Steve Schmidt, a senior aide.

This isn’t necessarily a surprise, but it’s interesting for a few reasons.

One, of course, is that McCain keeps trying to position himself as different from Still-President Bush, but that’s awfully difficult under the circumstances. Not only is McCain offering Bush’s foreign and domestic policies as his own, but he’s taking advice from the guy who shaped Bush’s campaigns.

Two, there is the small matter of journalistic ethics. For reasons that defy logic, Rove has been hired to play the role of professional “journalist” for a variety of outlets, including Fox News, the Wall Street Journal, and Newsweek. No one seriously expects credible, independent, bias-free reporting from Rove, but no serious news outlet should be comfortable paying someone to offer commentary and analysis on a presidential campaign while simultaneously advising one of the candidates in the presidential campaign.

And three, the National Journal article also noted that Rove, when he’s not pretending to be a journalist and/or advising the McCain campaign, is also consulting with far-right campaign outfits.

[A]way from the spotlight, Rove has been … spending a considerable amount of time as an outside adviser to Freedom’s Watch, the conservative political group that is expected to spend tens of millions of dollars to help elect House GOP candidates. William Weidner, a Freedom’s Watch board member, recently told National Journal that Rove has offered strategic advice to both the group and its major financial backer, Las Vegas casino tycoon Sheldon Adelson. Weidner, president of the Las Vegas Sands Corp., which Adelson chairs, called Rove “an invaluable asset” to the group. […]

[William] Weidner [a Freedom’s Watch board member] stressed that Rove has been “very generous with his time and ideas. He gives up his time for those things he believes in.”

Two GOP strategists said they have heard that Rove has worked out a private consulting deal with Adelson; this arrangement, one strategist reported, pays Rove in the mid-six figures for giving speeches and providing assistance to Freedom’s Watch on labor union issues, a top priority of the group.

It’s noteworthy because National Journal also recently reported that Rove is “up to his eyeballs” in trying to “nurture new independent political groups” to help McCain and other Republicans on Election Day.

It’s illegal, of course, for independent groups to coordinate with campaigns. It’s interesting, then, that Freedom’s Watch and the McCain campaign just happen to be getting advice from the same person.

Welcome to the double-talk express.

  • Rove is a traitor and should be in jail. That he is in any way involved in the election of the next President is an outrage. This man outed an undercover CIA agent working to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons to Iran. People working for our country died because of this man.

  • If McCain knows that McCain is not only advising him, but these 527’s of 501c’s as well, what does that say about his McCain-Feingold bill, or his willingness to follow law?

  • There was never much good in George W. Bush, but Karl Rove fed Bush’s worst impulses. Now Rove appears to be orchestrating the joint effort of McCain and the sleazy people at Freedom’s Watch.

I think that McCain might actually wish that he could run the kind of campaign that he talks about, but he has no idea how to do it. Are there any Republican operatives available to McCain who already tainted by the tactics Rove taught the Bush Administration?

  • Ignoring the Fox News angle for the moment, isn’t coordinating messages between McCain’s campaign and Freedom’s Watch illegal? I’m guessing that like most laws politicians don’t bother following, there is no effective penalty for breaking this one.

As for McCain, his zeal for campaign reform only began after the Keating 5 scandal damaged his reputation. I don’t think he is a true believer in McCain-Feingold, nor does he show any other core beliefs, so it isn’t surprising that he doesn’t seem to think laws apply to him.

It maybe illegal but, with FEC effectively de-balled, who’s gonna enforce the rules?

  • He who lives by the Rove, dies by it. Bushit’s longevity with turd blossom relied heavily on the non-accountability factor and cover the gOP congress gave them to run their monty. McAce will have no such cover. All he’ll receive from that moron is bad advice much the same he gave to George but w/o the cover…

  • Who do you think is going to be in a bush cabinet? Think, who has been in the last two republican cabinets, . . .

  • Failing to respond to a subpoena can, in some cases (and it is a matter for lawyers to answer whether this applies in this case) be an act of obstruction of justice. Karl Rove has, to my recollection, refused to respond to multiple subpoenas, sometimes on grounds which might turn out legitimate, but Congress should subpoena him on this issue as well — he clearly cannot claim executive privilege here. They should continue until he either appears and testifies or until they can get three instances of an indefensible failure to appear, when he can be charged with obstruction of justice.

If three charges of obstruction of justice can be made, the RICO act kicks in, and then we might actually get some information out of Karl about other things. This is what the RICO act was created for — to take down organized crime.

Bush may, of course, pardon him — but that would simply drive more nails into the coffin.

  • #2 Glen: right on. Rove is a good reason to bring back the stocks as a fom of punishment. I might even pay to fly cross-country to laugh (or spit) in his face. Better yet, have him tour the country (by cattle truck – an unclean one) so everyone gets a chance.

In the meantime I hope the Dems in Congress get him to squirm, under oath.

Boy am I ticked off today.

  • Here’s hoping Rove is so out of it he tries to re-run the Black Love Child story.

I have to say one thing about the Greedy Opportunist Prostitutes, they don’t hold grudges. Rove came up with a bunch of dirty tricks to keep McCain out of the White House and now McCain is cuddling up with the pasty little maggot in hopes he’ll work the same magic for him.

Can you squeal like a pig Sen. McCain?

  • It’s well known that Rove is going to push the right wing agenda and has positioned himself to do just that in the MSM. Does anyone but the choir actually listen to him. Hopefully he will finally get busted and imprisoned but these news organizations have given up even the hint of being fair or balanced or anything but right wing propagandists.

The press have proven themselves untrustworthy over the last 7yrs to do anything but be water carriers and the public even has proof that they were complicit in knowingly spreading government propaganda. Anyone giving them any weight is beyond having the ability for critical thinking.

btw…Pelosi and House leaders just gave Bush everything he wanted in the way of unchecked spying power on Americans with no oversight or accountability which also includes telecom immunity. But even more destructive they have now said that anyone who has broken the law cannot be prosecuted if the president or the government asked them to do it. Even retroactively.

There went the constitution right out the window. For what law can be defended if the president says it is alright to break it. Let the unchecked spying on the democrats campaign and their donors begin. Go ahead and drill in ANWR…the president said it was okay. Stupid cowardly dems could have put this off till after the elections but doing this now means they are complicit with the Bush administration making all his law breaking legal. It is officially a dictatorship and a fascist state…Next comes the Iran attack. We have no defenders of the constitution or of the people should King George decide to dismiss congress (just as the duly elected Hitler did with his cowardly congress) and the millionaire senate club.

Where is Obama’s voice while our dem leaders are busy shredding the constitution and the bill of rights? Still promising what he will do ‘after’ he is elected….just like Bill Clinton did. Like Pelosi, Reyes and the rest of them…stood up for once but not for long…immediately gave Bush everything he asked for in the first place…wasting time and money by pretending to have courage only to cave in again. Just pathetic.

  • I sure hope Karl goes full time with Mccain! Karl Rove is brilliant! He knows where the throat is and goes for it! BRAVO!!! Let’s put some blood in this campaign…tired up elitist skirts!

  • You know calling anyone you aren’t familiar with Turd Blossom is really juvenile. If you don’t like someone or their politics just say it in adult language.
