Obama gains among evangelicals, so Dobson pushes back

Barack Obama’s efforts to reach out to religious voters have been well documented in recent months, and there’s ample evidence that the efforts are paying off. Mark DeMoss recently suggested Obama was positioned to win about 40% of the evangelical vote, and the Obama campaign has unveiled the “Matthew 25 Network“, a religious outreach initiative spearheaded by Mara Vanderslice, who was director of religious outreach for the Kerry-Edwards campaign in 2004;

After Obama met with a group of high-profile, ecumenical leaders in Chicago two weeks ago, David Brody, the national correspondent for Pat Robertson’s network, noted, “Folks, this is an important development. It shows that the game has changed. Old rules don’t apply. We’re in uncharted territory.”

This, not surprisingly, is started to generate some consternation in religious-right circles. Obama’s goal is not only to gain support, but also to expand the definition of what constitutes a “religious issue” beyond just gays and abortion, to include matters like poverty, the environment, social justice, and AIDS/HIV. And so far, it’s a strategy that’s having some success.

Focus on the Family’s James Dobson has seen enough. (via Ron Chusid)

As Barack Obama broadens his outreach to evangelical voters, one of the movement’s biggest names, James Dobson, accuses the likely Democratic presidential nominee of distorting the Bible and pushing a “fruitcake interpretation” of the Constitution.

The criticism, to be aired Tuesday on Dobson’s Focus on the Family radio program, comes shortly after an Obama aide suggested a meeting at the organization’s headquarters here, said Tom Minnery, senior vice president for government and public policy at Focus on the Family.

That, in and of itself, is rather remarkable — an Obama aide thought it would be worthwhile for Dobson to actually talk to Barack Obama. There’s no entirely apt comparison, but it’d be a bit like John McCain stopping by the offices of MoveOn.org for a courtesy call.

Dobson apparently won’t visit with Obama, and feels strongly enough about Obama’s appeal to evangelical voters to leak his anti-Obama diatribe to the AP in advance of his broadcast.

Dobson and Minnery accused Obama of wrongly equating Old Testament texts and dietary codes that no longer apply to Jesus’ teachings in the New Testament.

“I think he’s deliberately distorting the traditional understanding of the Bible to fit his own worldview, his own confused theology,” Dobson said.

“… He is dragging biblical understanding through the gutter.” … He said Obama, who supports abortion rights, is trying to govern by the “lowest common denominator of morality,” labeling it “a fruitcake interpretation of the Constitution.”

First, if anyone is dragging Scripture through the gutter, it’s James Dobson.

Second, the fact that Dobson is pushing back this aggressively only bolsters the notion that Obama’s efforts to rewrite the religio-political rules are working. Dobson isn’t attacking from a position of outrage; he’s attack from a position of panic.

And third, the irony is Dobson helped create this opportunity for Obama in the first place. It was Dobson, after all, who issued a statement in February, insisting he would not vote for McCain in the general election and would stay home if McCain is the GOP nominee.

This, not surprisingly, sent a signal to a whole lot of evangelicals that a) McCain isn’t a reliable ally; and b) maybe that nice outreach person from the Obama campaign deserves a moment of their time.

Now, Dobson’s left to scramble, left with a message that effectively sounds like, “Wait! I hate McCain, but I really hate Obama!”

It may be too late, Jim.

Ahhh, the sound of power being torn from Dobson’s cold dead fingers;>

  • The Book of Leviticus (chapter 20) which Dobson criticizes Obama for referencing is the passage in the Bible that so-called Christians cherry-pick when they claim God condemns homosexuality. Yet Leviticus also calls for the death penalty for a child who insults his parents and the burning alive of prostitutes among its many other holy laws. Dobson wants it both ways.

  • Dobson and Minnery accused Obama of wrongly equating Old Testament texts and dietary codes that no longer apply to Jesus’ teachings in the New Testament.

Am I missing something? Did Obama refuse a ham sandwich at the AIPAC convention or something?

  • I’m posting this as a “recovering Catholic,” someone who’s moved on from a need to believe in some sort of deity to explain the wonder of the universe. But I still appreciate a lot of the social message of Jewish/Christian religious texts (not to mention Muslim, Hindu, Taoist, Buddhist, etc., etc…)

I’ve cribbed it from an excellent DailyKos diary by BenGoshi:

    http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/6/24/52347/9321/6/541040

    Matthew 25:31-46

“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, escorted by all the angels, then he will take his seat on his throne of glory. All the nations will be assembled before him and he will separate men one from another as the shepherd separates sheep from goats. He will place the sheep on his right hand and the goats on his left. Then the King will say to those on his right hand, ‘Come, you whom my Father has blessed, take for your heritage the kingdom prepared for you since the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food; I was thirsty and you gave me drink; I was a stranger and you made me welcome; naked and you clothed me, sick and you visited me, in prison and you came to see me.’ Then the virtuous will say to him in reply, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you; or thirsty and give you drink? When did we see you a stranger and make you welcome; naked and clothe you; sick or in prison and go to see you.’ And the King will answer, ‘I tell you solemnly, in so far as you did this to one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did it to me.’ Next he will say to those on his left hand, ‘Go away from me, with your curse upon you, to the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you never gave me food; I was thirsty and you never gave me anything to drink; I was a stranger and you never made me welcome, naked and you never clothed me, sick and in prison and you never visited me.’ Then it will be their turn to ask, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty, a stranger or naked, sick or in prison, and did not come to your help?’ Then he will answer, ‘I tell you solemnly, in so far as you neglected to do this to one of the least of these, you neglected to do it to me.’ And they will go away to eternal punishment, and the virtuous to eternal life.”

Not a word about abortion or gay marriage in there – but a greater responsibility is set out for the true believers…

  • If there is one thing that can bring me around on the FISA vote, it’s the possibility of giving a Severe Whacking to James Dobson and that Nazi fuckwit Tony Perkins.

I wonder if Dobson self-flagellates or if he hires a dominatrix to do it for him. Since he’s such a believer in the value of spanking, watching him get spanked in this election is going to be fuuuuuun.

  • Obama comes off like the person operating in good faith (heh), trying to have a real conversation about Christianity, faith/spirituality in general and what constitutes a “religious issue.”

Dobson, in refusing to meet with him and scrambling to denounce him as a “fruitcake,” comes off like a frightened and angry man guarding his personal Christian fiefdom.

This is going to be a lot of fun to watch.

Am I missing something? Did Obama refuse a ham sandwich at the AIPAC convention or something?

Not only that, but he referred to an independent voter’s Vietnamese pot-bellied pig as “unclean.” No, I imagine (but am too lazy to check) that it was a conversation about Dobson and his crew picking and choosing their way through Leviticus.

  • I came here to ask where the anti-gay stuff was in the Bible. Ha ha ha, it’s in the Old Testament.

LOL, so the Old Testament is thrown out now? Thanks for the news, Dobson. Now we can have gay marriage!!!

  • Danp,

Dobson is referring to Leviticus. The part that bans shellfish, irrelevant now. The part that he interprets to ban homosexuality, still applicable. See, James is permitted by divine right to pick and choose the parts of the bible he finds relevant.

  • “Jesus died for sombody’s sins but not mine.
Melting in a pot of thieves,
got a wild card up my sleeve.
    Thick heart of stone,
    my sins are my own.
    They belong to me.
    Me.”

    Amen, Patti Smith.

A day without orange juice is like a day with religion. Let’s hopefully someday move on.

  • First, TomC, as usual, your overstatement hurts rather than helps. (Damnit, man, your name-calling was needed in 2005, when people still thought Rove’s “Permanent Republican Majority” might be true and the ‘troops’ needed rallying. Now it only turns people off, big-time, even people who agree with you. It doesn’t turn them against your/our position, it just gets them mad at you. You are capable of brilliant and calm demolitions of the Republican positions. Write more of those and less of these.)

Now to the main point. I have been hoping for Dobson’s entry into this race, or for him to jump to Perkins’ support. Why?

    http://saltosobrius.blogspot.com/2006/10/jim-benton-on-bible-based-baby-beating.html

Read it, and just imagine us using this as a weapon against Dobson — and check it out because I never expect people to take my word, just to look at the evidence I present. It’s the evidence that will convince people. Imagine asking McCain if he welcomes the support of someone who has said this.

  • Not that I am a really religious type, but I do know that in the bible, there were warnings of false prophets, men who bear false witness to the word, etc.

Dobson and the rest of these preachers who seem to think it is they who know what the bible says, fall into that category.

It’s ironic to say the least that the very people who claim to know the word will be the goats described in the above Matthew quote.

You’d think they could figure that out by now.

  • but it’d be a bit like John McCain stopping by the offices of MoveOn.org for a courtesy call.

Actually more like Al Gore meeting with an astrologist about climate change. You can’t have a productive discussion with someone who thinks they have special powers.

And thanks, doubtful. I didn’t read the (via Ron Chusid) article until after my comment.

  • Dobson has been declaring himself to be God’s “Deciderer Guy” for decades now. Obama’s offering Christians the choice of being a “real Christian” in both word and deed without being a weaponized-OT-carrying, Pharisee-wanna-be, brimstone-for-thee-but-not-for-me Dobsonite.

Conservatives fleeing ReThugylvania and Christians abandoning VangeeVille as if the Berlin Wall had just re-fallen. The bad guys can’t blow up Obama’s “bridges” fast enough—now can they?

  • Don’t forget about Leviticus 18, in which God forbids tattoos. Given that 25% of the population is supposed to have tattoos these days, including many right-wing types, I guess that will show ’em.

  • I just wanted to note that Obama met with many faith leaders, from the right to the left, not just evangelicals. You’d never know it from the press accounts, though.

Jesus sent many Jewish religious leaders of his day into a tizzy, as he challenged the status quo, and broke many of the religious laws of the day. Dobson would be right at home with those leaders. He doesn’t want to talk to, or be challenged by anyone, I would guess. I’d love to be a fly on the wall in a Dobson/Bill Moyers or Dobson/Jim Wallis conversation.

  • Found this letter the other day over at Democratic Underground which is worth viewing. Posted by MN against Bush:
    “…
    My response to Mr. Dobson:

    Dear Mr. Dobson,

I heard that you believe that Obama is distorting the Bible, and I must say that is a pretty devastating attack coming from a person like you who would obviously never distort the Bible. I mean everybody knows that the Bible is a book that is entirely focused on stem cell research, gay sex, and Sponge Bob cartoons. Look at Jesus, he was clearly a Republican. Never mind all that crap he said about peace and helping the poor and stuff, that is all outdated crap now. If he were still alive today he would clearly be calling to go blow some Iranian ass to kingdom come, and instead of giving aid to the poor there is no doubt he would be pushing to stop a minimum wage increase and working to ensure that our CEOs take home even more money. There is absolutely no doubt in anyone’s mind that if Jesus were alive today he would be waterboarding people for America, and he would be singing along to a Lee Greenwood song while he did it.

We all know that all that liberal crap that Jesus spewed in the Bible is distorting what Jesus’ position would be today so we ignore those parts people and focus on the parts that are important. Like the parts about Jesus hanging out with prostitutes, a tradition that many Republicans have followed him on.

You sure do have an interesting interpretation of the Bible, but I am sure that people will take you seriously when you criticize Obama for distorting the Bible. But that is not all you criticize Obama for Mr. Dobson, you also tell us he has a “fruitcake interpretation” of the Constitution.

You are completely opposed to those fruitcake interpretations though, you demand a barley cake interpretation. As Ezekiel 4:12-15 tells us “thou shalt eat it as barley cakes, and thou shalt bake it with dung that cometh out of man.” The dung that cometh of man Mr. Dobson, that is certainly a verse of the Bible that you have lived up to very well, and that is no distortion.

    Sincerely,

    A Citizen”

I also learned that Dobson is not an ordained minister or preacher of any kind so really has no credentials for telling anyone about biblical interpretations. He’s a psychologist and an abused child still healing apparently.

  • Tom Cleaver @ #5, your comment about a “Severe Whacking” reminded me of the Beatles’ song “Piggies”

“Have you seen the little piggies
    Crawling in the dirt
And for all the little piggies
    Life is getting worse
Always having dirt to play around in.

Have you seen the bigger piggies
    In their starched white shirts
You will find the bigger piggies
    Stirring up the dirt
Always have clean shirts to play around in.

In their styes with all their backing
They don’t care what goes on around
In their eyes there’s something lacking
What they need’s a damn good whacking.

    Everywhere there’s lots of piggies
    Living piggy lives
You can see them out for dinner
    With their piggy wives
Clutching forks and knives to eat their bacon.”

Does it sound to you, as it does to me, that they are describing the politicians who are running (ruining) our country?

  • I’ve said it before, but the thing that won the gay marriage fight in Canada was the United Church breaking away from the pack and supporting same-sex marriages. The Conservatives went into the 2004 election believing that Christians would support them on the issue and were shell-shocked when they didn’t. It turned out some people were happy to support the anti-marriage position as long as it was framed as religious versus secular. When it became a question of progressive Christianity versus conservative Christianity, the playing field changed.

Obama appears to have learned a lesson or two from this. Good. I’ve been praying that the marriage issue would raise itself before this election and California has happily obliged. If Obama can leverage it properly, he can break the Republicans into splinters.

Dobson attacking Obama could end up being counter-productive for him. One of the worst problems with the progressive movement is that some non-religious progressives openly attack Christianity without qualifying what they say as referring to the Falwell, Hagee or Dobson camps. This has the effect of pushing progressive Christians closer to the wingnuts, who are usually more careful in their words. The fact is that the only thing many of the wingnuts hate more than an atheist is a progressive Christian. Listening to Dobson for the next few months should fix this in people’s minds.

  • Yeah, it seems to be the same everywhere in this country. The ones who thump the bible hardest tend to be the most hateful, uneducated people around. And people who carry around “God Hates Fags” signs and giant pictures of bloody fetuses tend to be butt-ugly and crazy with no chance of even anonymous wide-stance bathroom sex, much less impregnation. The ability of men to pervert the bible’s meaning speaks volumes about the obvious lack of foresight and omniscience of it’s writers. I know of NO ONE – and that includes the Republican Christians in my own family – who could stand up to close scrutiny if the bible were used as the moral guide. Better to follow the teachings of my other favorite moral guide, How To Serve Man.

  • That, in and of itself, is rather remarkable — an Obama aide thought it would be worthwhile for Dobson to actually talk to Barack Obama. There’s no entirely apt comparison, but it’d be a bit like John McCain stopping by the offices of MoveOn.org for a courtesy call.

Or Hillary sitting down with Murdoch and Scaif.

  • Oh, and one other thing, historical evidence suggests that the Samaritans of Jesus’ time were descended from Assyrians who were moved into Israel to replace the people exiled by Sargon II. The Samaritans’ point of origin is therefore either Iraq or southwestern Iran, or possibly Syria. This means that one of Jesus’ teachings (the parable of the Good Samaritan) was a direct exhortation to value the good actions of a person, even one of a somewhat foreign religion that a lot of one’s countrymen don’t like, over the bad or selfish actions of a self-described religious leader.

I think I’m inclined to agree with him.

  • “…Old Testament texts and dietary codes that no longer apply…” Doesn’t sound like the fundamentalism I grew up with, you know, “the literal truth and inerrancy of every word of the Bible as the Word of God. Choosing to believe in part of the Bible and disregarding the rest is the same as believing in none of it. Every word is sacred,” even the parts that contradict each other or violate the law, such as endorsing slavery and stoning for minor crimes such as doubt in the infallibility, etc.

Dobson and his friends, after far too long, are hoist by their own inerrancy.

  • egadfly @ #2:

“Yet Leviticus also calls for the death penalty for a child who insults his parents and the burning alive of prostitutes among its many other holy laws. Dobson wants it both ways.”

no, i think dobson would be perfectly happy with both of those, too.

  • Since when the discussion of how to go about electing a president had to turn into obscure theological arguments? We are going back to the middle ages hand in hand with Obama and Dobson. Sad.

  • Dobson needs to brush up on his Bible-reading. In Matthew 5:17, Jesus says he has not come to change the Law (of Moses). According to Jesus, you were still supposed to follow the Law (except for a few exceptions which Jesus was advocating).
Note that this passage is only in Matthew, which is considered the most “Jewish” of the gospels. Matthew was written (almost certainly not by Matthew the disciple) for a Jewish-Christian community, probably in Antioch. Any other references to following the Law in the other gospels fell victim to the maxim “The victors write the history books”. The victors in this case were Paul’s followers, who took over control of the Christian Church from the Jewish-Christian apostles in Jerualem after Jerusalem was sacked by the Romans in 70 CE.
Ain’t it amazing how most atheists know more about the Bible than your average Christian. That’s one of the reasons they are atheists.

  • If anyone knows about distorting the Bible and pushing a “fruitcake interpretation” of the Constitution, it would be James Dobson.

  • Dude, can you imagine a conversation between Jesus and Dobson? Oh wait, I don’t think Dobson would even let him cross the threshold of his pseudo-Christian-wingnut temple. Hmmmm. Pharisees, anyone (or the false prophet thing, which, BTW, is in the Book of Jude)?

For reference, check out Todd Agnews’ lyrics and you get the scenario (http://www.christianrocklyrics.com/toddagnew/myjesus.php). In his times, Jesus was an anarchist.

  • I’m actually curious what Dobson thinks is Obama’ ‘Fruit Cake Interpretation of the Constitution’. Dobson can argue all he wants about the Bible, but I don’t think he’s got the qualifications to argue about the Constitution with Barack Hussein Obama.

  • As a general rule, I allow Reverend Dobson to spew as he sees fit because he’s right at least some of the time and because a few friends of mine whom I cherish deeply hold him in high regard. However, his comments about Senator Obama were crass and grotesque, completely missing the point of what our nominee said.

  • YEAH! I’m with Dobson on this one. Just what does Obama, a constitutional law professor, think he knows about the constitution.?

  • Prup, you are always the voice of reason where I am not. But on this, I 100% agree with what Tom said. Dobson, and his ilk, are some of the worst of what our society has to offer.

Christian and Christian values my ass.

  • I did catch Dobson’s little rant over lunch on one of the too many wingnut stations here in Omaha.

He sounded rather petty, pathetic, and just down right mean-spirited.

When he spouted out his “fruitcake interpretation of the Constitution.” line, I had to turn it off.

Just a sad little man who doesn’t realize how much he has fallen from grace.

  • I hope that some of those who hold Dobson “in high regard” will note the irony his decision to reject out of hand any meeting with Barack Obama. What does Dobson fear? Perhaps that Obama will hold up a mirror to the Dobson brand of Christian practice? Does he fear that Obama will (politically) convert him? Does he fear that he cannot influence in some way this man who is running for president of his country? Why would ANYONE who hopes to shape public opinion throw away an opportunity to give his/her views to the presumptive nominee of either party? Hell, I do not hope to shape public opinion, and I would jump at the chance for a sit down with someone who might one day be POTUS. A rejection of such an offer, assuming it was made and made sincerely, is a very craven act.

  • Your attack on Dr. Dobson is so off base. Dr. Dobson loves the Lord, Jesus Christ, with all of his being. I know he is not afraid of O’Bama because being saved means fearing nothing! God calls upon Christians in the bible to stand up for what we believe and I thank God that Dr. Dobson has a voice for Christians worldwide! I pray for the politicians and administration, no matter what party, so that God’s will be done. A belief in Jesus, the man and the God, is not negotiable when it comes to salvation and going to heaven! Thanks and God bless!
