Obama campaign email stirs VP buzz

We still don’t know who Barack Obama will choose as a running mate, and with the senator on vacation with family this week, it’s probably safe to assume we’re not going to hear any announcements until next week.

But because of the considerable interest in the looming news — the convention begins in two weeks, so we know the announcement has to come sometime soon — any kind of hint about a pending statement causes a stir.

And late yesterday, the Obama campaign sent this email, from campaign manager David Plouffe, to its list of supporters:

Barack Obama is about to make one of the most important decisions of this campaign — choosing a running mate.

You have helped build this movement from the bottom up, and Barack wants you to be the first to know his choice.

Sign up today to be the first to know: http://my.barackobama.com/vp

You will receive an email the moment Barack makes his decision, or you can text VP to 62262 to receive a text message on your mobile phone.

Once you’ve signed up, please forward this email to your friends, family, and coworkers to let them know about this special opportunity.

No other campaign has done this before. You can be part of this important moment.

Presumably, when a nominee makes the announcement, he/she does so in some kind of high-profile speech. And since Obama is in Hawaii, there probably won’t be any such speech this week.

But, given Plouffe’s choice of words — “about to make” — and the realization that the campaign could very well make an announcement without a speech, some news outlets are speculating about whether word is “imminent” and “very near.”

To be sure, this may very well be a stunt to get email addresses. If so, it’s a pretty clever stunt — the campaign recognizes the anticipation surrounding the naming of the running mate, and is capitalizing.

Kleiman added:

Why announce now? [I assume “soon” has to mean something like “this week”; otherwise it’s too big a tease, and not really consistent with the campaign’s operating style.] Conventional wisdom has been that the Olympics are going to take the country’s mind off politics for a while. Or is it that a VP announcement would make a big enough splash to break through, and the teaser campaign gets some ink and electrons even while Obama is “on vacation” [which I suspect translates in part “trying to persuade Grandma to come to Denver”].

My only thought on this is that McCain expects to have the campaign trail to himself this week, and naming Obama’s running mate would erase that advantage altogether. Under this scenario, the VP news dominates this week while Obama’s away, then Obama returns to the campaign trail, with his new running mate, next week, which leads right into the convention, which begins two weeks from today.

Or it’s a stunt. We’ll find out soon enough.

I think it will be general Wesley Clark. He could easily mop the floor with McCain’s “military credentials” up one side and down the other. And he’s the only one of the possible VPs (except Webb) who could call into question McCain’s pathetic record and withstand the inevitable “you’re not military, so shut up” response.

  • The week that Obama is on vacation would be a good time to have a VP candidate dominate the news. Although the Olympics will reduce coverage of other events, the VP pick would likely be the biggest political news of the week and will still obtain coverage.

  • Hopefully text-spammers don’t send out false alarms.

Or on second thought that would be kinda fun.

  • Damn.. now I need to check my email every half hour. Little did I know the burdens of my monthly 25 bucks.

  • the VP pick would likely be the biggest political news of the week and will still obtain coverage.

Would it be big enough news to wipe John Edwards off the screen?

    Somehow, I doubt it.

(Also – would McCain be at the ready to announce his veep immediately after Obama announces his, just to mute the coverage a bit? I’d find it hysterical, but not completely out of the realm of plausibility).

  • Would it be big enough news to wipe John Edwards off the screen?

John who? Oh yeah, that politician who had an affair and then lied about it…

    John McCain!

  • I just sent a text message to the number provided, and the conformation message I received in return states “[y]ou will not be one of the 1st notified…” So, I doubt me sitting in my office will know who Obama’s VP selection is before, say, CNN. Still, it will be pretty cool to get the text message.

  • “Its a trap”
They could possible by baiting McCain camp into jumping the gun and naming their VP candidate during the Olympics….

Seriously I cant beleive they would roll out the VP candidate during the Olympics. while he is on vacation.. I mean they dont even have satellite feed and cable tv capability in such far flung exotic locales as Hawa’ii….do they?

  • Got the email and, while I won’t bother signing up for it (it’ll hit the news seconds later), this strikes me as another way to make Obama supporters feel more connected to and part of the campaign. It doesn’t do any harm among those of us who find it gimmicky, and it will probably do some good among those who get into stuff like this.

This campaign is always looking for ways to strengthen the bond with voters. Compare this to McCain’s online campaign efforts…and laugh.

  • I’m on the Obama email list (who isn’t?), and I got excited when I saw this message yesterday. But after reading it I didn’t take it very seriously.

    Attention-getting stunt?

Ploy to build the email/donor list?

    The real thing?

    Probably all of the above.

  • “Would it be big enough news to wipe John Edwards off the screen?”

Unless there is a new development in the Edwards story, the VP pick might be bigger news. Some less reputable news outlets, such as Fox, will still dwell more on Edwards but otherwise the VP pick might be a bigger story.

Of course if there is a new juicy development in the Edwards story, it will take over as top story.

  • Not much of a texter myself (can’t see the screen) but many of the first-time voters/supporters are and they text all day long. This is a great move. Everyone getting buzzed at the same moment!

  • “Would it be big enough news to wipe John Edwards off the screen?”

Let’s hope not. The more the media talks about Edwards, the closer mainstream news gets to actual comparison with McCain’s first marriage — a cad-like behavior far worse than Edwards.

That brand of mudslinging is wholly acceptable, where the media could do the dirty work for Obama, without his campaign lifting a finger.

  • Let’s hope not. The more the media talks about Edwards, the closer mainstream news gets to actual comparison with McCain’s first marriage — a cad-like behavior far worse than Edwards.

Given what we know about the media’s decades-long propensity for giving McCain a pass, I don’t think this necessarily follows. Right now the MSM message is “Those pretty-boy Dems [Clinton, Edwards] can’t keep it in their pants.” Unless some actual comparing to McCain starts happening mighty soon, we’re better off with the Edwards story dying.

  • My money’s on Rick Astley. -stevem

    He’d be a great pick!

He knows the rules and he’s committed. I don’t think we’d get that from any other guy.

He’d never give you up, let you down, run around, or desert you.
He’d never make you cry, say goodbye, tell a lie, or hurt you.

I feel like I’ve known him for a long time and my heart is aching. Aw, what the heck, let’s play that game.

    Plus, he’s not Evan Bayh.

  • Wow, too much coffee! I agree with somebody else here who said Russ Feingold. Of course, he’s not in the running. I’m really not interested in a Wes Clark as he is just another military man (see John McLame) and I think they’re dangerous (see John McLame). Maybe it’s Hillary!

    barf!

  • stevio @ 14 said:

Russ Feingold please! It would make my day…

I’d agree with that one, as a second pick, but after Russ praising McCain the other day, that makes him a little less palatable.

I do agree with Racer X and picking WESLEY CLARK. To me that choice makes the most sense, especially since General Clark has proven that he can stick it to the old boy (McCain that is)

  • I agree with those who’ve said this email was a way to make the faithful feel connected, and it has the added benefit of gauging who is still fired up and thus most likely to send a check at a moments’ notice. And I don’t buy Bayh, I like Clark more than I probably should because I don’t think Obama needs to “concede” he lacks Commander-in-Chief credentials, Feingold is fine with me,but somehow I think we’re all in for a surprise. And if I had any guesses as to who it will be, well it wouldn’t be much of a surprise now, would it?

  • The Obama campaign already has all of our email addresses. This got our cell phone numbers, which the rest of the world has been using effectively for texting large groups for many years. See: http://www.itworld.com/CW_1-31-01_it. It also got our numbers without someone having to manually enter them in a system.

We can all be reminded to go vote; to make sure we vote in a way that will guarantee that the votes are counted (mailed absentee ballots where those spurious Diebold systems prevail), and encouraged to take friends to polling places on election day. I was happy to oblige, even if it turns out to be a tease AND gimmick.

  • I’m going for the text message to my cell phone because I absolutely have to know right away in case I miss the 24 hour a day coverage of it 15 minutes later.

  • This got our cell phone numbers, which the rest of the world has been using effectively for texting large groups for many years.

This got more of our cell numbers, but hasn’t the Obama campaign been texting all along? I refuse to give any of my phone numbers to any of these guys*, so I don’t know how much they’ve been using this tool. Anyone?

I do know they ask for email addies and/or phone numbers as the “price” of getting into Obama events. I commend ’em for it.

*I’m almost tempted to give my cell number to McCain’s people just to laugh at how much they don’t use it.

  • Withay@24 makes a good point. I don’t let my cell phone get on any lists of telemarketers no matter what they’re selling.

  • NOT Bayh (or Webb, or McCaskill).

No one who voted for the Protect America Act should be considered.

I don’t see Clark (or Hegel or Nunn)

I’m tired of Democrats running that far to the right. (Clark isn’t on the right, but it gives credence to the idea that Obama is weak on Defense and Security.)

I still don’t see anyone better than Sebelius.

  • Maria said: *I’m almost tempted to give my cell number to McCain’s people just to laugh at how much they don’t use it.

    Now that’s funny!

  • I always felt I was pretty plugged in politically – particularly to the Dems – but who in hell is Rick Astley?

  • phoebes: A highly cheesy singer from the 1980s. (It takes less time to Google, Prup, than to write useless and [as always] self-referential guesses.)

  • Sure, Dale, but John McCain is “learning to” use the (rotary) telephone. Let’s have patience!

  • Feingold can go fuck himself.

I tend to agree with this sentiment (regrettably), but in this audience if you’re gonna spout that, you may want to provide some backup:

    Feingold fluffs McCain

    I found this really disappointing

  • God not McCaskill, she’s a DINO having voted the same as our other Senator R-Kit Bond. She got so many complaints she took down her email contact site and refuses Town hall mtgs. Campaigned as a progressive but is a Blue dog. Her fame is only due to campaigning for Oabama so people assume she is a progressive. She supports Obama because her college daughter pressured her to do so.

I hope he chooses Russ Feingold…I didn’t really consider him until I read an article at Democratic Underground and realized the man is perfect. Voted against the Patriot Act and the AUMF..has never had a gaffe and is a good speaker. I don’t expect him to be chosen but he’s definitely the best qualified.

Purp wants Sebellius but though she’s tolerable she would alienate many and is a weak choice in my opinion…don’t get me wrong, I love her like a sister…just not one of mine. I also love Clark but fear Obama will choose a relatively unknown.

It’s funny but McCain wouldn’t even make a god Vice president. Money and sympathy got him in the senate but after this national exposure I’d be surprised if he remains a senator. He hasn’t even acted like a senator since he began campaigning, most people don’t get paid when they don’t do their job.

  • I love it that MY Barack Obama can dance. Can’t wait for that inaugural ball.

Yeah my son keeps rick-rollin’ me. I’m gonna strangle him. :))

  • joey @ 41 said:

Russ Feindgold…[…]..has never had a gaffe

I suggest you read the link provided by @ 40

I’d consider that a negative for Russ. If it wasn’t for that comment, he’d be great.

  • You all are overlooking the fact that 2 prominent politicians will also be in Hawaii this week, perhaps tied to a timed Veep announcement. Who are these two politicians, you ask? Why, none other than Dennis Kuchinich and George W Bush! So my money is one either of them/ snark.

  • Others said: “Clark would be an awesome pick.”

What, after being thrown under the bus for saying that McCain getting shot down is not a qualification for being president?

I like Wesley well enough. I have no time for Russ (he should have run, damnit).

Dodd and Biden would be terrible.

Richardson would be good (and Obama can claim it’s for his Energy experience, rather than Foreign Policy), if the sex vetting turned out clean (thank you very much Senator Edwards).

But I’ll sicken a couple of more of you and say that Clinton is still the best choice (and yes, SB, the convention schedule seems to imply that she’s not the one).

  • I was originally a Richardson supporter and would think he’d be a great VP — except that he is Hispanic, and I am not sure if a ticket without a ‘white’ man might trigger a lot of racism — idiotic as this should be. Right now, with the immigration haters out there Hispanics are probably more hated than blacks, and the combination might be a big hurdle (the same way that McCain can’t choose his own ‘best choice’ Crist, because he’s gay).

And Maria, I knew he was a minor singer and didn’t feel him worth the time to google — and yes, I’m ‘self-referential.’ Sometimes it’s better to explain where a perception comes from than pretending I am ‘speaking the truth from on-high — and sometimes I’m just egotistical. But always? Usually I’ll give you.

  • Honestly, what would be wrong with Obama picking a relatively-unknown VP? Instead of the story lasting for one news cycle, it could last for three or four . . . and, assuming the Obama team does all the necessary vetting, the mainstream media would have no skeletons to unveil about the VP candidate, and we’d get three or four positive news cycles. How is that bad?

Plus, picking an unknown would reinforce Obama’s image as a different kind of politician, rather than one who follows the DC script and goes for the “safe” or well-known pick.

  • Who are these two politicians, you ask? Why, none other than Dennis Kuchinich and George W Bush! So my money is one either of them/ snark.

    Spit take! I’m howling.

  • Thanks, ResumeMan. I thought there was already a link to Feingold’s statement in this thread, but it must have been elsewhere. I am usually all about the links.
