Mr. Diplomacy

I’ll never have the time or the energy to point out every insane thing Dick Cheney says over the next two months, but there was something that jumped out at me this morning that I feel compelled to mention.

Mr. Cheney, campaigning in Clear Lake, Iowa, criticized Mr. Kerry for “demeaning our allies.”

“When it comes to diplomacy, it looks like John Kerry should stick to windsurfing,” he said.

So, let me get this straight, Dick “Go F— Yourself” Cheney feels like one of his strengths is diplomacy? Does he even know what diplomacy is?

1: the art and practice of conducting negotiations between nations
2: skill in handling affairs without arousing hostility: tact

Would any reasonable person describe these traits applicable to Dick Cheney, a man who loathes international cooperation, preferring going it alone in Iraq, and has helped squander U.S. relationships with former allies? The man can’t even get through a photo-op on the Senate floor without cursing a respected lawmaker who approached him in a friendly manner.

Indeed, when it comes to diplomacy, the one time this administration sent Cheney on a diplomatic mission, it was a humiliating debacle for him and our government.

[In March 2002, Cheney] went on a tour of Middle Eastern capitals to line up America’s allies for our war against Saddam. He returned a week later with the Arabs lining up behind Saddam and against us — a major embarrassment for the White House.

And now Cheney feels like we should trust his diplomatic skills over Kerry’s? Once again, it’s like I’m stuck in a Twilight Zone episode.
